Blacky's Custom Undergravel filter

- Many months ago, I built an undergravel filter. I finally chucked a video together about it. I like that it's customizable to run off air or filter or powerhead. Versatile with its functionality!

This just came across my feed. I have been researching undergravel filters and using them as a reverse flow trickle system. This is a really cool build. Giving me some pretty good ideas! I hope you have a very blessed day! Thank you for sharing! 👍🌱🐟🌱
@Underwater and Curious Thanks good to know 👍😁🌿🐟🌿
Great video. Thank you. I learned something today. Should be a simple task to clean the PVC pipes with a stronger vacuum to get the sludge out.
Great build, I was laughing when you were trying to connect the last corner with one hand, because I know I would have cracked it.
Looking forward to the next video showing what the tank looks like now, see you at the stream 🤘
I'm sure my frustration at not getting it together shined thru even at sped up pace
It's always amazing to me what fish keepers make themselves. I'm looking forward to seeing what this tank looks like now.
Love and channel support
👍💕👍
Thanks doll!
I haven’t seen an under gravel filter in forever! Nice design and build👍
I'm bringing em back! Pretty soon, everyone will have em!!
Very cool! Love the design
Cheers! Thanks for stopping in!
Well done Blacky...
thank you sir
thats a badass Makita btw...@@drblack66
The joys of having an old man with a shed full of tools!
Great info- i may try this
Always worth a go. I'd probably use smaller pipe for an air driven system to maximize flow... Next time for sure...
That's very cool!
Cheers Ash! Thanks for stopping by...
Thirsty rabbit, Aqua mate and Blacky the boys from down under. You guys were tearing it up on the last stream mate. Well done 👍
thanks man!
Thanks brother
@@thirstyrabbittanks2u191 And il be glad to send you guys some stickers with my new logo (J.eryx73@gmail.com)
Cheers Joe, I'll send you an email
What an awesome project! Well done! Hmm, I have a couple undergravel filters that I've acquired thru buying used tanks. Guess I should re use them
They are very underrated in my opinion. Especially if you get a nice flow going
@@drblack66 I've previously bred Jack Dempseys on the regular with just an Undergravel.
Nice... I like this build a lot. Any chance you have or are going to be putting out an update on this?
I wish I did slits on my undergravel filter design. Probably would be even better as opposed to using drilled holes, though mine is definitely a smaller scaled version. 😃 Thanks for sharing
For sure slits work great due to the fact that facing downwards they can impact upon a greater area. Thanks for watching!
Interesting
something i would love to make!
if i do another one I'm going use smaller pvc for better suction..... thanks for stopping by!
Hello there. I am dropping in from the Aqua Mate channel.. Hope your having a wonderful day!
Thanks doll!
How do you clean all the dirt that gets trapped under the gravel? I mean, when you do a water change, do you have to vac the gravel to the very bottom to clean it out?
I gravel vac once a year at most... Plants like fish poop in their diet
Hello. I purchased a Lees premium under gravel filter system And was wondering if instead of the using air to power it if I could use a hang on canister filter as its power source
Sure could! Just a case of making your hang on intake join to the uplift tube on the undergravel filter. Plumbing shops are a great source of useful doodads...
ripper build
Cheers!
Nice, I will make it with PBC sprayer in all 4 sides also, but with a water pump no air
Agreed re water pump. I've come to learn that this build is best hooked to a powerhead or a cannister. Air isn't vigorous enough
What is pbc sprayer pls?
@@drblack66 a water pump connected on top of the PVC of the undergravel filter, and a PVC pipe with holes connected to the pump, or it could also be connected to an hangover filter
Cool design. I remember when undergravel filters replaced box filters. Everything that's old, is new again, lol. What is that tank stocked with now? Great build, thanks for taking us along.
I'm definitely still gonna try one in my rivulatus tank hooked up to the cannister filter... I think they perform well with the right flow... Tank has guppies, swordtails, cherry shrimp and bristlenose. Prolly show it next video. This is the first showing of this tank on my channel and it's been running almost a year since this undergravel install!! Thanks for watching Bob!
Awesome, I'll be watching @@drblack66
Dude, this is a beautiful idea! I.... dunno about that @Aqua Mate guy though... lol j/k
Thanks a bunch!
this is an awesome idea!. would it work for a Turtle Tank?
Definitely. You are only limited by what footprint you want and how you want to power it
You sound more Australian in these videos than you do now
This tank is always sooooooo much cleaner since the under gravel went in... although.... the massively reduced population is probs a large contributing factor, hey? Would you consider still building one for your riv tank?? Super proud you finally got this vid done babycakes ❤️
Thanks love. I would like to rebuild the original and run it with the cannister filter instead of air
drblack66 so... does that mean - that now its cycling back up to the top and/or just keeping the debris moving around rather than settling, so it can be filtered out etc
And then
If you put it on the filter, it’ll suck that filth out from the bottom for immediate filtration??
Is that a no for the riv? Would he upset it with all his digging around??
Yes to each of the first questions. Currently probably don't have enough substrate to justify it as an undergravel filter in riv tank, it'd more be a bottom of the tank filter.... I guess, but even if there was lots of substrate and digging, the filter would still work greatly
Had a small chuckle when you were putting the last piece together in the tank and you tried to hold the pipe through the glass. Have to make a trip down soon to see everyone.
Haha. yeah it was pretty awkward. Nice to hear from you. Be tops to see ya lad
Also, if you haven't already, check out some of the live streaming weve been doing on aqua mate's channel...been hella fun
Any updates on this build?
Still in place and running like a dream all this time later
@@drblack66 awesome. What are your water parameters and water change schedule?
@@soaredwood162 Bwahahaha!
hi i just realized this 5 years ago, THIS WILL hugely improve your system---when you cut too many slits---the water DOES NOT go through most of your system!! it takes the easiest path of resistance EQUAL TO the diameter of the pipe. so your only getting the 1st 10th of your filter---the back gets almost nothing. To understand what i am saying [so you can help others not mechanically inclined also understand]---- 1] if you had a pipe with a plug on the end---forcing water in--equal pressure remains in the whole pipe 2] now take the same pipe with lets say 8, 1/4 inch holes, they will all produce almost the same volume of water thoughout the whole length of that pipe. 3] if you drilled many holes witch exceeds the surface area of the diameter of the pipe well then of course, the water escapes TOO EASILY at the beginning of your system and none gets to the end. i re-did mine in a pond and aquariums started up the system UNCOVERED and watched all the area water being distributed. and this is how i verify the effect of toooo many holes. 1/4 inch hole every -6 inches is plenty for even distribution---go online to see your pump GPH and devide it for the correct number of total hole in the system sorry for long explanation
Thanks for the input. I've often wondered if I had too many holes in it
well nothing is right or wrong---its just hydraulic measure--- with a little powerhead i would say 14 holes at 1/4 inch spread out the whole bottom space----a plenum ensures even draw---rather than pipe in gravel plugging the holes----besides the gravel around pipe method is only supplying the gravel right beside the pipe! water will not go into the middle of the bed----a plenum it will!!! super super more filter action@@drblack66
See you in a fortnight my brother
are you at 27,000 yet?
Bahaha... I've actually lost one since the stream boost.... Seems I may have rubbed someone the wrong way.... Thanks for stopping by!
I do not see how your design can work effectively,
I suppose it would somewhat work for BB, it looks to me like there would be too many dead spots as the air pump cannot produce enough flow to make it work like it needs to,
For a larger make like this, it is definitely better to run it with a powerhead. As mentioned in the video, this design was originally going to be connected to an eheim cannister.
@@drblack66 would the power head shoot air into the pipe system or suck water through the gravel and pump it back out?
Suck through the gravel and come out wherever you point the outflow
someones got the youtube posting bug...haha
How did u modify your airpump to push out water
The motion of air bubbles moving through the water lifts water with it.
I can modify the pipes of the under gravel filter to connect to a pump or cannister filter to get greater flow through the under gravel system...
Oh ok, thank you
