Hi, I’ve started my “nomad life” by moving to Portugal. I’m actually an immigrant rather than a nomad. However, I’ve got the whole of Europe to move about. I did not know much about KL Malaysia until this video, learned a lot. The beauty, cleanliness, organization, etc. So with all the places you have been so far, which country would you consider retire in? I have to say, you guys are not only budget travelers but very well planners. It takes a lot of organizational skills, like a backup plan, health treatments, lodging location, etc. You kick in high gear for planB if planA does not work. This is commendable and thank you for sharing.

Greetings from Bucharest 🤗 Don’t underestimate the importance of great comfortable shoes! I left the states with what I thought was a nice pair of Brooks running shoes, which are expensive, but it turned out that they wore out from all the walking we’ve been doing in the past two months, so I needed a new pair of comfortable shoes. In all honesty, I’ve had them for a long time and I thought they still had a long way before they wore out, but I was wrong 😂Anyway, I somehow managed to find a pair of Reebook shoes for only $43, yes, that’s correct, in Belgrade…I think I just got lucky, because all the other shoes everywhere else cost well above $100 if not close to $200. I was prepared to pay that much too because I know good shoes cost a lot. I guess I will find out how long my new shoes will hold up during our full time travel with time. 😉 Looking forward to visiting Malaysia and exploring Kuala Lumpur in the future. Looks exciting and affordable.

Hello in Bucharest ♥ We absolutely agree - a great pair of walking shoes is key! We walk on average 6- 8 miles a day and in cruddy shoes that just would not happen. We now have found, shoes are something we do have to replace more often than we may have first anticipated. But, when you only travel with one or two pairs of shoes, quality is key. Thanks so much for watching! Cheers 🍻

Nice overview of your costs in Malaysia. We have been to KL several times now in our lengthy exploration of Southeast Asia because we like it. Regarding the food... Although I generally agree that it can be more expensive than other places in Southeast Asia, there is great inexpensive local eats to be found. There are places where the local business people go for lunch for example. There are also great little family run places that can be found. It's one of the things we enjoy about KL. It is this big modern developing city, but you can still get plenty of local Malaysian culture if you seek it out.
Like you, we have found good shoes to be quite expensive by Southeast Asia standards. I paid close to the same as what I would have paid in the U.S. Unfortunately, I don't have access to the same money saving tactics that I used in the U.S. for things like good shoes. However, it's definitely money well spent when you walk as much as we do.
I've definitely noticed prices for rent creeping up over the last year in KL. An apartment we stayed in a year ago is now approximately $400/month more. Airbnb? Post Covid rebound? Inflation? Maybe all if the above.
BTW... I love Brian's dry sense of humor 😂

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  Рік тому +2

Hi! We have had some great recommendations of places to eat that are less touristy and more local, where prices were much less. Unfortunately, we didn't get those till after we left, but now have some great ideas for when we return ☺
Airbnb prices and for sure been creeping up, I think this is just a combination of all the things you mentioned above. We just have to search a bit more for ones that fit within our budget. Hopefully, they level out and costs don't continue to climb so quick.
I will let Brian know - he loves all the support for his humor 😂 Thanks so much for watching!! Cheers 🍻

Great coverage of KL. Been there half a dozen times as transit passenger enroute to Penang. Malaysia in general is a great country to live in clean, modern, safe and very affordable. Amazing how a smaller country has the infra structure so nice and modern. If the weather there were a bit nicer it would be a Paradise. Unfortunately you don't get everything in one place. Hats off to you guys on how despite all the fun things you get do and enjoy, you keep the cost very manageable. Cameron highlands and Genting are two nicer cooler places where you can beat the heat but wont have all the nicer fun life style of KL. would be worth a visit though. Now the question is where next? Having been in Thailand and Vietnam I thought you would have covered Angkor wat. Cheers and Safe travels!!!

Things are cheaper there, the vibe is different. The fireflies, not like the American lightening bugs, are just GORGEOUS. And if you like hiking, this area of Borneo, is fabulous (from what my friends have said). I lived in Seoul for over five years and travelled all over. For a salad, a fish taco, 1 beer, and a soda it was $30 w/o tip. Needless to say we don't eat there often. Malaysia is definitely an affordable place to VISIT but not if you want to live/retire there unless you can afford the hefty MM2H financial thresholds, or stay under the 90-day limit. I enjoyed your video and appreciate the content but it's misleading to claim staying in a country for 30 days as relocating, living or retiring there. If it were, I've "lived" in 40 countries since 1990.

The Malaysian government may change the MM2H requirements as there was a drop of 90% applications. There is another program known as nomad visa which is a 1 year visa and is renewable. A Japanese couple who are UA-camrs has received this visa. Their channel name is, "IChang". An American expat is currently living in Malaysia under the old MM2H program. His channel name is "Andrew Taylor". He has lived in Malaysia for more than 5 years.

For the MDEC De Rantau Digital Nomad pass, there have been a lot of rejections though thankfully, iChang and Kenshoo Quest were approved. Andrew Taylor has been in Malaysia for 9 years and it will be interesting to see how his MM2H renewal goes next year. As I understand it, all those extra “fees” are listed so if you don’t like the overall price, don’t rent it. I have a place in Bali on Airbnb and I have no extra fees whatsoever.
However, when I went to Boston last summer, the place we stayed did have some extra fees and that was disappointing, but we knew about them beforehand. So it’s not Airbnb, it’s that some of the owners are greedy.

Nice video but it's a little misleading. If you are intending on retiring or moving to KL for the medium-to-long term, you can get a similar quality apartment to the one you stayed in for 2500-3000RM fully furnished on a 12-month lease. You paid over 5000RM because it was a short-term holiday let effectively. Any branded products in the malls are about the same or more expensive than in the West (I don't know how the locals and their 3000RM per month salary can afford it) and good quality food can be costly, too, but not excessively so. All this is based on my experience of living and working in KL for 3 years.

@@BrianandCarrie I should have also added utility bills, which you don’t get with holiday lets but you do with medium-to-long term rentals. I think I was paying a couple of hundred ringgit a month but it’ll vary depending on aircon usage.

Just wondering if the grocery stores carry ORGANIC options for produce and meats? I read that Malaysia uses heavy glyphosate even though there has been a push to ty to ban it-it hasn't happened. Also, they raise chickens in close cramped conditions similar to the US. I keep hearing heavy praise of the food in Malaysia but it sounds like they are mostly talking about the choice of options/cultural foods but not the QUALITY of food. One of the main reasons I want to move from the US is because the foods/soil are so polluted it's like literal slow poison. Unfortunately its very hard to find countries that havent polluted the food supplies.

Hi! We did see quite a bit of organic options in the grocery store, especially the very large store we found. I'm always very happy to see organic options in stores, so this was a very nice find. Cheers!!

How is the noise there? I've been living in India with my wife and I absolutely hate it here. It's so loud, neighbors are from hell they blast music and tv so loud you can hear it through our wells, and floor and ceiling.
We've been looking to move to Malaysia while waiting for my wife's visa, and maybe try to get a permanent place there as well.
I'm just really concerned about noise now

Am currently researching travelling around SEA for 1-2 years.
Finds that for a single, staying in a 1BR apartment within 600M of Lot 10, USD 1500 for 30 days is possible.
Assumes RM 60 daily for eat-outs on street food, RM 40 for 3-4 cans of beer and RM 120 daily for AirBnB.
I mean, if I want to eat western food in expensive restaurants I wouldn't be travelling to SEA!
So I really try not to eat western food in SEA countries.
Phones and transport etc not included.

And who wants to eat Western food in SE Asia? The food is one of the best parts. Your pricing seems right and phone service is cheap. Check out our Vietnam Cost of Living video. It is very inexpensive!! Thank you for watching and commenting!!
      Cheers!!🍻

@@BrianandCarrie I'm just saying that dining on Western food in SEA is definitely going to blow my budget since meat like beef and lamb are almost all imported, thus expensive.
Could I get a steak, side veges and a drink for RM 20? I doubt it. I don't eat Western food when I visit.
Now local street foods are a different matter.
BTW I read that getting a visa to Vietnam is a bit complicated...ie, need photos etc.
Seems odd Vietnam doesn't have visa on arrival, Like Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia or Sin.

We applied for our visa for Vietnam online and had it back in 3 days. Very simple process actually. As for the picture needed we just used a simple head shot taken against a white wall with my cell phone. We look forward to visiting Vietnam again next year as well ☺️
