Synth strings tutorial. Understanding sound design & how to make basic patches on a Behringer Crave.

  • The first in a short series of looking at how we can gain better understanding of sound design by emulating traditional instruments.
    In this video I cover producing a basic string patch on an analogue mono, which was a challenge in itself, made even more so by my decision to forgo the use of the traditional (and physically accurate) sawtooth wave in favour of a square wave.
    Over the next few installments I intend to cover the analysis of wind and brass instruments, to see how we can work towards those reproductions, also on mono synths.
    Although for this example I'm using the Moog Mother 32 "inspired" Behringer Crave, the principles of this video can be widely applied to any synthesiser.
    Please feel free to any comments or questions below, and to hit like and subscribe if you've found this interseting and would like to follow the series.Check out the rest of my channel too for a host of other gear related videos, and as ever, many thanks!!

    Careful you might end up in a classroom instead of the studio. The way you casually explain things that other channels would have me pulling my hair out, and your overall vibe conveys that you know what your talking about. Nice bits of info here, was secretly waiting for the Crave to go flying in the intro... If you get a minute have listen to a new old track I just refinished, you might dig it! Great video!!!!!

      Hey Sunny, sorry for not getting back to this sooner mate, Corona knocked me on my arse..!!
      I've just been doing these to help me remember what I'm only just learning really... Writing stuff down and then explaining it helps it stick in my head, otherwise I'd forget it within 24hrs of learning it lol
      Heading over to your channel to play catch up right now..!! Cheers mate, much appreciated..!!

      Hey cheers Reggie!! I'm thinking about taking an angle grinder to this one next and making it eurorack compatible! Lol

      @@rhampton1914 I just picked up a 3d printer so thought about making a new shorter and longer faceplate to move the patch points to the end like on the Neutron. So even more like the Mother-32!

    If you play a violin using a bow, there’s no ”release” time. The sound from the string stops when you stop the bow. However, the violin body itself may resonate. And if you lift the bow while still moving it, the string also resonates for a while, but it’s still not like a slow release envelope - more like a reverb.

      Hey Jonas, thanks so much for that insight! Definitely worth considering further...! 🤔

      @@krsTBedfordStudios Well, there actually is a sort of decay or release but it’s not from the sustain level really, there’s a ”jump” in the tone 🙂

    • @krsTBedfordStudios
      @krsTBedfordStudios  2 роки тому +1

      @@pekkosjonas do you mean like a flick of the pitch as the bow is removed??

    • @pekkosjonas
      @pekkosjonas 2 роки тому +1

      Not the pitch, it’s the timbre (or whatever word is correct). I just tried and listened. So, when lifting the bow from the string the level drops to a lower level from where it decays, more like a reverb then but not entirelt since it’s still the string that decays.
      stopping the bow while in contact with string kills the tone though (perhaps a short reverb depending on the instrument).

      So more across the broader range of resonant body frequencies would you say??

    Interesting, even if I personally don't need to emulate 'real instruments', I have the Peter Jung Symphonic (and others) in my MoXF! :-)
    Especially interesting that you're using the Crave for this, just to make it harder for yourself, I guess, hahaha, sounds good though!
    Have you used any modelling synths? I love my Antumbra Atom (a mini MI Elements), but for the reason above, apart from once making my own bassist jamming along with the help of PNW, I mainly use it for weird sounds,

    • @krsTBedfordStudios
      @krsTBedfordStudios  2 роки тому

      Yeah I have a few, Korg, Novation and a dirty pile of Roland lol
      I enjoyed using the restrictions of the basic Crave with this, just to get people thinking about the origin of the actual sound, rather than just guess work with ears lol Very much introductory stuff, but if we can think about how the frequencies are created on an instrument and the envelope of its sound to remove that guess work then it'll help beginners to be able to better produce the sounds they want in general...
      Or at least that's my thinking! Lol
      Your bassist must have been thrilled btw...! 😉🤣
