  • The second in a short series of looking at how we can gain better understanding of sound design by emulating traditional instruments.
In this video I cover producing a basic wind instrument patch on an analogue monophonic synthesiser.
Over the next instalment I intend to cover the analysis of brass instruments, to see how we can work towards those reproductions, also on mono synths.
Although for this example I'm using the Behringer Neutron Semi Modular to make a woodwind or flute sound the principles of this video can be widely applied to any synthesiser.
Please feel free to any comments or questions below, and to hit like and subscribe if you've found this interesting and would like to follow the series. Check out the rest of my channel too for a host of other gear related videos, and as ever, many thanks!!

Good stuff Pete, I used to set myself tasks like this when I first started out, really makes you learn on a fundamental level what everything does in subtractive synthesis. Additive synthesis on the other hand... definitely the best option for recreating real instrument sounds but becomes mind boggling very quickly! I will have to visit at some point when you test negative ;)

Just tested negative the day before yesterday! Woot... still getting occasional hits of fever though as my body is in overdrive lol
I've been enjoying digging into this, it's a bit off the tracks from what I want to be doing with my time, but I'm feeling the benefits mentally... I've been able to reproduce a lot of sounds through patch design for a while, but relating the fundamental theory has definitely improved the process! Hmmm.... additive... I was asked earlier about synthesising a sax, additive would be the best way to do it with time dependent amplitude, which is tricky with subtractive, I just tend to use analogue more though...
Cheers Jesse, I really appreciate it mate, thank you..! :-D

Looks like you drop a few kilo's! Oh man do I have a older track I made with a lot of brass in it. I'll have to find where its hiding. Gotta get to bed will watch the rest of this one in the morning!

The only good thing about it was losing my appetite for two weeks and sweating out a tonne of body weight lol

Would you have any tips for synthesizing a bass saxophone? I’ll try a square wave and can figure out the amp envelope on my own. (I’m on a digitone). It’s difficult to capture the slow oscillation and rumbly character.
    Have a quick recovery!

Hey Mark, I'd start with a saw, thats very much your traditional brass sound.... Brass responds very much like wind regarding envelopes, and although its still kind of a pipe the conical shape of brass instruments is what ultimately defines their timbre..! (Brass instruments produce a complete harmonic series, the only waveform in subtractive synthesis that does this is the saw)
Try adding LFO to the VCA for the rumble, but delayed from the start of the sound? maybe using an external controller if you can..??

@@krsTBedfordStudios Thanks for your reply. I guessed square wave because of the reed, but you're right about the saw. Sounds closer. The LFO on VCA does help with the rumble too :) I'll keep experimenting and stay tuned for the brass video

@@krsTBedfordStudios The Elektron Digitone, since I don't have an analog synth. May not be the best tool for this, but I love it and want to see how close I can get

Actually it might be easier, but I'm unfamiliar with the Digitone I'm afraid!
