Wow, she's singing so clean! I truly love that she can sing her own raspy, emotional way in Hop Along and still completely able to sing crisp and clear in stuff like this. She has a ton of control over her singing abilities and it's beautiful!
The magic in Hop Along is Frances' writing and Joe's guitar and engineering. She makes such pretty songs and he accentuates them with arpeggios and clever riffs.
Beautiful!! Frances is SUCH a legend. I remember the first time I heard Hop Along and her voice, and was totally blown away. Also her slightly awkward banter is incredibly endearing.
The first thing you need to know about Frances Quinlan is that she doesn’t sing. She whispers and shrieks, she lilts and caterwauls: vocals that are at once expressive and elemental. Her voice makes you feel things.
thank you!!! I was racking my brain because I swore she sounded like someone else I had heard. I listen to hop along every once in a while but not enough evidently
warm soulful and uplifting. like a fireplace of intimacy. vocals have a tender warm adventure. contrasting with the chords that are interesting with a hint of edginess and darkness. Overall something felt familiar yet different. Im sure repeat listens will continualy reveal other layers of feeling.
It's like an entirely different singer from her stuff with Hop Along. She's got a really nice clean tone too but the things she can do at the edges of her range are otherworldly.
Maybe it's because Mom showed me a lot of music when i was little that made me open minded, but I've seen quite a bit of tiny desks concerts and i have yet to find one i didn't enjoy 🤷🏿. Thanks NPR!
@@nprmusic How come Tiny Desks take several months before they get published, especially Jon Batiste, which was recored in November, for example? Some take more editing than others, or you have more to do other times than others? Not a critique, just wondering!
@@ceeb420 ok Babs, i did some research and i think i've translated Carmine's comment, what they were trying to say...."if you like Frances Quinlan, check our her other awesome project, Hop Along, they have a great tiny desk too"
Hop along is my favorite band I also discovered algernon kidwalleder joe rhineharts former band love in! Quinlan in my opinion is the best songwriter of all time
I burned somebody a mix CD a couple weeks ago and it had Your Reply and Detroit Lake on it, in the same order as they play them here. I'm debating on whether or not I should brag about my foresight. Also, if you're not familiar with Frances, she was in the band Hop Along and their album Painted Shut is one of my all time favorites. So if you like this definitely check that out!
Very nice, Francis. You will probably not read this but, if you do, please keep this up! Nice chords and melodies! Still room for growth, but you are on a beautiful path! (And great little band too!)
This is the kind of faux-wellmeaning, condescending, fake"dad"-like commentary/criticism that only someone who has never achieved any catharsis as a musician can make. "...still room for growth, but..." "...great little band..." Yawn
Jebrahn Ferrier Relax man, i’m all against condescending adults but hey, you never know the old guy might have an eye/ear for something. Sad you’re rebuking him for being an old folk

They're so good.
they're nonbinary, just so ya know!
My heart flutters whenever I hear Frances Quinlan's voice. I love this performance so much!

Joe Reinhart (the bassist and guitarist) was also the guitarist for Algernon Cadwallader back in the day, amazing player
bigbluesparky yup, frances + joe are both part of hop along, a great band that goes back pretty far w algernon cadwaller
The magic in Hop Along is Frances' writing and Joe's guitar and engineering. She makes such pretty songs and he accentuates them with arpeggios and clever riffs.
Woah, I didn't know that, was (am!) a big fan of Algernon Cadwallader as well!
He's a great musician and all round studio guy
@Joey Archie Yup, been watching on flixzone for years myself :)
i discovered hop along through tiny desk and they've been one of my favorite bands since. i've seen them live 4 or 5 times. thanks npr!
Yes, nice
There are so many bands on here. I feel like I'm missing a lot.

A lot of people dropping comments about liking her voice. Check out her other band, Hop Along! They've been around for a bit.
My Spotify stats don't lie...Hop Along has been my #1 band the last three years in a row :)
100% the best singer in the world. Am i the only who doesn't recognize her visually ? I've seen a bunch of videos. weird
I was hoping someone else beat me to it!
Well Dressed has some of my favourite lyrics & singing in the world

She has a great voice.
Reminds me of Dolores O'Riordan
Thanks, I was wondering.
The beat change in "Your Reply" is so unexpectedly cool. The talent and skill in this concert tho👌
I’m still amazed that every artist/band I listen to has been on tiny desk
Who else do you like?
I love when people can skillfully add a fiddle into their music! New artist for me, what an awesome find!
you should check out her band "Hop Along". My fav band :)
Yes she's a treasure ❤
I'm impressed with her chording on the guitar both in Standard and Open D (I think) tunings. Such icing on the cake (with her voice being the cake).
Love Frances. Love Hop Along. She killed this performance.
How cool. During the second track Molly made the violin sound like a mandolin by tapping the note as she bowed. Never heard that technique.

I will steal this and tell it to my creative writing class. Luv u

Frances Quinlan's voice makes me happy.
i lov how awkward n silly they are between songs but their lyrics are so deep and beautiful! i would die to hang w frances

Bless you and your mom!
Introduce me to her
Sameeeee

All hail Queen Ansleis!
Such a beautiful voice! I hope more people find out about her.
Love her tone!
Hate it. Sounds like she's getting an attitude wit me
@@jakedeacon7796 maybe you shouldnt get on her nerves then
What an incredible show. In awe of her talent.
I still love this tiny desk so much
Very particular voice, beautiful
I've seen Hop Along live in Ptld twice now and can't wait to see FQ on a solo tour. (Everyone who gave a 'thumbs down' can just move along now)
will version two should've told them to hop along now
DUUUUUUDE her voice is SO COOL
I discovered and have been listening to Hop Along all week and look what pops up!
Yessssss! This is awesome, y’all sound beautiful.
Omg she's so talented💖💖💖
All time favorite artist, been following her for a while, the dude from algernon cadwalleder too
These guys are fantastic!
She originally had a show scheduled in Orlando for tonight, so it's such a nice surprise to see this video debut today!
the violinist is (sandy) Alex G's girlfriend
Nick B yeah she plays violin on his last two albums Rocket and House of Sugar
Lovely voice, music and sweet words. Wish you all luck. 👏👏👏
Powerful and beautiful
My man, u are powerful and beautiful
Beautiful music, wonderful voice 😊👍👏 🎶🎉
This is awesome
I wonder how many people here haven't heard of Hop Along
....what difference does it make if they've heard of Hop Along or not?
what is "hope along" precious?

I had never heard of Frances Quinlan, then I heard her sing one note and I was like, "Oh it's the chick from Hop Along"
BreakfastIsImportant833 Well you're in for a treat. She is amazing and the band is dope.
my three favorite songs off of this album!!!
Pure talent at an incredible level. :) x
I think you guys should get gregory and the hawk on when this is all over, great songwriter
Oh my gosh yessss, I freaking love her music
Instantly thought of Gregory and the Hawk when she started singing
Her speaking voice is not what I expected after that first joint lol... This was pretty great.
Frances. Wonderful.
Just wanna say I love that you do certain mainstream artists it's a pleasure, but my (media) life depends on episodes like this...
I love that NPR posted this at 5am (EST)
I dont believe u
Early bird gets the worm!
Her voice is so sweet
ohhh this was GREAT!
WHY AM I JUST DISCOVERING HER NOW
So powerfull
Great voice, great songs keep going.

Dang I thought that voice was familiar - love Hop Along!
They need to get I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME on Tiny Desk whenever this is all over.
So good. Unfortunately, as with everything else their tour was cancelled hopefully they can reschedule for next year!
her music makes me trip in the best way possible
My favorite song writer
wow that was really good!
A quien no le va a gustar esto que es arte puro? yo creo que son los ex de todos los que trabajan en NPR
I love Frances and Hop Along so much. When I hear this performance I can't help but hear similarities to Joni Mitchell (in the best ways possible)
I was thinking that too, but in a not so complimentary way (both seem slightly neurotic).
Super !!!!! Merci !!!!!
I just wish she play Rare Thing my favorite from the album 😢
.
Well at least we have a video for it
this made me smile so big (:

Love this channel
Listen to Greycedes by Jessica Pratt and tell me she shouldn't be on tinydesk
Voice like a cranberry
Omg, I’m in love 😳
Wow!
Belle découverte Superbement frais
She really has one of the best voices ever
I would love to see like a crazy metal band lime mastadon or gojira but playing at half volume with a 5 piece kit.
Frances, like, Quinlan Vos ? I dig that.
If you guys stop by Ottawa, you'll have at least one fan :)
I like this style alot she is awesome but this is better than hop along.
Molly germer the violinist! Played tiny desk again for Alex G!
Her husband
Great music!
Yo te delineo los ojos! :)

This sounds like early Hop Along.
