- In this episode of From the Van With Dan, Dan discusses the three tools for traveling photographers and tips for a successful journey.
1. Clothing: From 100-degree summers to 10-below winters, when exploring a country with four distinct seasons in a van, you need to be prepared. For a traveling photographer, having a great layering system makes the rest of the adventure possible.
2. Photography kit: When using several camera systems, choose which camera to pack based on the job at hand. Take the time to thoughtfully plan out your camera needs before your trip, and never take all of your travel cameras at the same time. Less is more, and in a worst-case scenario, you won’t lose all of your valuable photography travel kits. You want to make sure you have a quality camera bag to house your photography equipment. Dan also recommends traveling with your printed field guides and Blurb magazines or trade books. These serve as your introduction, calling card, and proof of intent.
3. Photography culture: Being a travel photographer is often more than just a job, it’s a lifestyle. Having a travel van serves perfectly for photography, but it also serves as a launching pad for other hobbies, like adventure, sports, or documentary projects.
