Bob Ross In Acrylics Short Version - • Following A BOB ROSS P...
I actually just finished a Bob Ross painting with acrylics. I find them much easier than oil. Good luck to anyone who tries!
How hard is it I want to try but I think it’s to hard
I cant get gesso cos the art store I go to is closed cos of covid
Is gesso really important and needed?
@@leviquintana7104 I just tried it. Newby, came out nice. I found my acrylic thin so I have to let some dry before dragging of going over with another color as it got messy. I wiped off and redid those sections.
I became interested in painting because of Bob Ross. Congrats to you for your attempts in his style using acrylics. Just keep on developing your methods and do not become defeated by your failures. Today even though I have become a fine detail artist I from time to time still incorporate some of the things which he and Jerry Yarnell taught me many years ago. It never hurts to watch others paint on videos. Watching others will give you inspiration and hunger to refine your development. You have a good start. Now run the race and finish the course.
I had fun painting and following your tutorial. I have wanted to do a Bob Ross painting with acrylics. So this was perfect.
You did great. Thank you.......acrylics so much easier for myself.
Got to love the kids honesty. Quick to point out the tree wasn't quite right. Personally I like the water in acrylic painting. The "silvery" sheen of the water seems much more realistic.
Now for me to give it a go.
Use the mist water bottle to blend acrylics to give that soft dreamy look to blending an area! 💛 happy painting!
Omg thank you
Thank you so much for this tip!! Can’t wait to try this!
wait how would you do it?
Oh this is a way better method than what I was doing with a wet brush and hoping for the best 😂
I think it's GORGEOUS!
Wow smart woman you did a great. Painting
I like them both for different reasons. The oil one for the more realistic look, and the acrylic for the sharpness and vibrancy of the colors. You did a fantastic job on both!!!!! 🎉
Very good 👍🏻
Try using the gesso with an acrylic retarder. 10:1 gesso to retarder ratio. It does enable a pseudo wet in wet but you have to still work faster because the foreground may be drying and will start to get tacky. You may have to add some retarder to the paint or use Golden Open Acrylics which dries slower than others. Also, spraying the back of the canvas with water will slow down the canvas from soaking up the H20 in the paint and allow for a slower drying time as well.
Nice happy paintings)) I liked the oil better, looked more soft and dreamy but both are good)) Waiting for my master set to arrive, and I will have a go at it myself))
Richtig schön
Thanks so much for this wonderful painting. You did a wonderful job.
Thank you 🥰🥰
Hi! I'm french, i discovered Bob Ross just some weeks ago, and I immediatly tried to paint like him, because.... Well, that guy made oil paint seems soooo easy. A masterpiece in 30 minute? I'm in! But just like you, I reaaaaaally hate oil painting (too dirty, impossible to really clean, and it seems it's neeeever dry....) so I tried with acrylics, but with little results only. What you made in this video encouraged me : yes, obviously, Bob's method is not only for oil painting! I just need more practice! Thank you for your vid, you've done really good! (and I largely prefer your acrylic paint! )

Ive never painted in my life and even I know it takes Captain Americas balls to do what she did there.
😂😂♥️♥️
I think you done an Amazing job , I'm using oils and not doing so good lol , maybe I'll switch to acrylics .
Hi April! I am a new subscriber to your channel. I was looking for inspiration and found you here. Thank you for showing us your talents and ideas on painting a Bob Ross painting in acrylics. I agree with you totally how oil paints and brush clean up is so unlikable. I used to paint in oils only but after trying acrylics, it is hard for me to justify painting in oils other than the paintings sometimes come out much richer and dry with a nice sheen compared to acrylics but there are ways around that. I also wanted to mention that Bob used a liquid white which as you probably know is an oil based primer that when applied lightly will help the mixing and blending process tremendously. The gesso (or acrylic paint) is used as an underlayment but needs to be completely dry before applying any oil paint over it or it would create archival problems down the road. Oil paint however can be used over completely dry gesso or acrylic paint but not the other way around. I hope you are staying safe! And as Bob Ross says "Happy painting and God bless my friend"!
So can you use a retardant or do you use the gesso with acrylics to get a similar result..?
Both are gorgeous 😍
Hi April. Thanks for this . I ve watched a lot of BR videos but I was always put off by the oil paints and the fantasy subject matter. I often wondered if any expert could transfer the wonderful technique to acrylic AND allow regular landscapes to be painted. I think you have achieved that. Great.
Thank you so much 🥰🥰
You should add an acrylic retardant to the white Gesso. I believe a ten percent ratio retardant to the Gesso will keep the Gesso and subsequently the paints themselves wet long enough for the desired effect.
Glazing medium or water helps the flow of the acrylic paint
Or retarder so that they remain wet.
You might want to try water soluble oils. You can clean your brushes with soap and water.
A suggestion, make a video following along with a Bob Ross using Winsor & Newton Artisan, water mixable oil paint. I would love to watch. I loved this video, a new sub!!! I can so relate to you.
Thank you!!
Are you using liquid white?
Hi there
I am a fan of Bob Ross, my question is was you using Bob Ross paint brushes with your Acrylic paints??
The reason I am asking is because I have used Bob Ross brushes myself with an acrylic paints. I have had arguments with other artists regarding this topic.
Thank you in advance
Brian Ross
I am starting a painters group, we will try this!
You did fantastic!
I followed a Bob Ross painting tutorial with acrylic because of the same reason, oil is messy. After following with acrylic, that can get messy too. I did use the gesso in place of magic white, but I also added glazing medium to give it more slip. The painting turned out ok, I think the blue I used gave it a muddy look because it was a crafting paint, I didn't have the Masters Touch blue, I had the other colors though. I wasn't going to go out and buy new paint for this experiment. I used what I had on hand. Aother thing with Masters Touch paint, its not a high quality paint and it the one you used is a soft body acrylic, they do make a hard body acrylic now, but I don't think I would invest in it. What I would like to try with a Bob Ross, is the water mixable oil paint, it cleans up with plain water and has less odor. The one I wanted to try is Windsor & Newton Atisan.
Oh yesss I must try this too!
Good to be here!!
You did great job very brave. Only negative the path didnt go anywhere.
Acrylics are my go-to as well.
Great your job , I've also painted Bob Ross painting with acrylic, You painted the first white jesso, but instead you applied the water on canvas first, loaded the white and the blue color on the brush at the same time. , after touching in X shape, touch white on the empty space then blending .The rest step is the same as the oil.
You nailed it! Bob Ross is what really got me into painting, I started with acrylics and I eventually I started with oils, my first oils were Bob Ross Oils, and then I got some Gamblin Oils (1980 series) but I’m a true acrylic artist at heart 😊, I noticed that your brush was getting choppy and out of shape this is because these brushes are natural bristle brushes and even though I’m sure you’ve used natural bristles with acrylics for some reason the Bob Ross ones are different and I don’t know why, I think it’s the type of bristle, you can get these bigger type brushes on amazon that would be more suitable for acrylics. I want you to keep those brushes nice, trust me I’ve done it before and I ruined my brushes.
Thank you! I need to watch a UA-cam tutorial on caring for my brushes!! lol
@@thecrafthousebyapril1198 I have probably watched every brush cleaning tutorial on youtube and I still can't keep my smaller brushes in shape lol
Is gesso really important and needed? First timer here and plan to use acrylics. I've heard acrylics dry really fast, does that include drying up on the plate your using? And do you use water at all? Btw. Absolutely loved the video. I'm going to try this out tomorrow!
It looked great
Your young boy made me nearly die laughing when he picked Bob's picture, it was a funny moment in the video. :))) Your painting is beautiful, both are great but yours has some qualities in the shrubs and foliage that I like more. Great video, thanks for posting! 🙂
That’s really good ❤❤❤
Thank you!!!
looks amazing i’m going to try myself! ❤️
I would love to see what you create! 🥰🥰
Gesso is a chalk based acrylic paint. You need to use the white liquid clear the black liquid clear in the liquid clear that's what you put on the canvas to make your paints move and the acrylics with last longer to smooth them out Bland gesso is not what he's using to blend his colors
This was very helpful as I am just getting into painting. One tip though, I noticed your using Bob's signature brushes which are natural bristle and are a must for oil painting. the problem is the natural bristle will absorb the water in water based paints like acrylic and get floppy and cause the bristles to fall out. So that's why you were probably having issues here. Beautiful job btw.
I do acrylic paint too and this is reallyyyy good.
Thank you so much!!
Sweet painting! Maybe time to try one of Bob's black canvas works?
Thank you! That’s a great idea! I love those too!
Awesome job!
I love it you did amazing! I had some similar issues that you had and this was just so validating!
Awww thank you so much for the feedback!
Wonder why so many people think Bob Ross the greatest? firs let me make clear that I have followed him for many years and the little I know about painting learned by watching him, having said that there are manyother artist that use acrylics and do a great Job. Totally different tecknics. Nice to explore "new Worlds" Ship Entrerprise.....
You did a great job. I also use acrylics cheap which is good for practice. As they say, you will never get to do a master's but you will do better with every new painting.
also, I found acrylic paint so cheap I could not believe it. off course. probably in a few months, the painting will start cracking, or worst I do not care.
Happy painting
She is as calm as Bob himself
People have been telling me this lol and that I'm so patient! I'm like who?! me?! lol
This made me feel really validated lol, I did a Bob Ross with acrylic and it wasn't going right so I ended up winging the rest and my mountain is alittle more abstract lol but bristles ended up sticking into the painting lol I just started yesterday so I hope so get better with more practice!
I use a mixture of titanium white and vegetable glycerine as magic white. Drying time extends a lot making blending piece of cake.
♥️👏👏👏👏👏
I use gesso (or satin white acrylic paint) and retarder for the “liquid white”. Then I’ll use a tad of retarder in the paints and a pit of fluid medium and it comes out great!
do i reaaaaally need gesso?
I have a question :( Can I apply retarder directly to the canvas or do I have to mix it with the paint first?
@@veiiyan either mix it with the gesso or the paint (or preferably both)
@@oldschool1107 okay thank you!🤩
What is a retarder is it gesso ?
Good job!
Do you wet your brushes before painting with acrylics? They always look so dry
I just finished up painting using acrylic versus oil and I find it more difficult but then again it all comes down to the user so not hating on acrylic acrylic is still nice
I liked the water, mountain s and sky on the oil painting but I like the trees and bushes better on the acrylic
I wish you be my wife and paint ❤
But I should express that I was disappointed with you when 8 watched the beginning of video as long as you continued painting I shocked and was frozen hey girl you are phenomena please go on and keep painting you are real artist you are Bobi Ross❤❤❤
April you do a great Job. the problem with Oils is they are very toxic. There is an alternative to that and that is getting the Oil paints that mix wiith water. I have not try yet, for now I am using acrylics . When i try the water bse oils I will post my comments. Where are you located?
murillo
very brave to do you first Bob Ross acrylic painting live on youtube. Great job!
Thank you!!!
I know your struggles, I tried this experiment too.
aww keagan is so cute
Will it work if you don't use gesso?
JOYCE HO same question
Gesso is a primer for the canvas. It’s supposed to be dry before you paint on it.
Cute boys
Do We Like Have To Do Something With The Gesso Or Can We Straight Cover The Canvas And Paint On It?
Hi I didn’t fully grasp it. So did you put gesso initially on the canvas?
Super🎨🖼subscribed💐
Bobs partners robbed bob in order to get richer after his death. I will never buy Bob Ross products in respect of his memory. Such s gentle talentrd man. Rip bob.😢😢😢😢😢
Yes it’s so sad 💔💔
I like what you are doing, why not for next video, why not try using a thinner brush for finer details.
Do we have to use gesso?
What acryllics did you use.
0:37:08 put it on 2x and you hear the helicopter coming xD
Yes
🤣🤣🤣
Do more Bob Ross
Which brushes are using for this acrylic painting?
Great job. Your boys are adorable too!
Thank you!
Did you put any retarder medium in your acrylic paint?
Im really new with painting. My paint dries before i get to blend my sky color.
Not gonna lie, you broke my heart when you started using natural brushes with acrylic paint. Your bristles were breaking because your paint is drying and you have a very heavy hand.
nice
The grass and trees didn't turn out as well because the acrylic you are using is a soft body acrylic.
loving your tips! Thank you!
Guess the dogs didn't listen ! Lol
WHAT KIND OF BRUSHES DID YOU USE. THE BRAND AND WHERE DID YOU GET THEM? aRE THEY SYNTHETIC OR OTHER? THANK you !!
I want to know also. Good question. I have been trying to find the equivalent of bob ross brushes for acrylic painting to achieve similar results.
Same question. I never see them that big in the art store, and the couple I got from the hardware store shed all over
Nice video.New sub!
Thank you!
@@thecrafthousebyapril1198 😍😍😍😍
Aclyrics are fast drying then how u wet ur colrs
Subbed
Thank you!
Too much paint in the big brush and pressing too hard with it. You can always add more but you can't take any out. AND you're not beating your brush against the easel legs. 🤣
haha I know! I couldn't fling it around like that lol wanted to!
i thought it was on acrylic nails🤣 but i still enjoyed it
Hahaha!! I'm glad!
I hate working with oil paints too, too messy for me.
Can someone post the original bob Ross video she followed please
ua-cam.com/video/kasGRkfkiPM/v-deo.html
Gesso huh?
Bob Ross dabs the paint on the canvas. He doesn't swirl it
Your messing up the brush
Damn u r fine
damn you're cute
Stop wasting canvases
I suppose that if you really want to paint lurid and unnatural paintings, then paint like Bob Ross.
You should try using Acrylic Liquid White. Check out @WildCreates on YT. He tells you how to make it. 👍
