Happy to see you guys dappling with the electrified kayaks. Your UA-cam presence bring info to the masses and get them thinking of the possibilities. And there’s a wealth of knowledge on the internet too. I often see Newport mirroring the offering from Haswing, who has brushless motors. I wish they would marry their gps trolling motor with their brushless motor, then we can finally have something that is up to date. I bet Haswing is the OEM and Newport likely combining a kayak mount with a brushless motor and bringing it to the market. If you use lithium, do use the LIFEPO4 chemistry. That’s safest and still have all the advantages in lightweight, power density and longevity. It usually has 3000+ lifecycle versus about 500 or less for the heavy lead acid battery. Also, the capacity of lead acid is usually less because if you draw the voltage down and use 50% of the power, you shorten its life. You should showcase a 50-60 mah 24v lifepo4 should give the same runtime as the two 100mah 12v lead acid but at much lessor weight and size. There’s so much content you can make on all this topic during the fishing season downtime.
Dude. I give you three thumbs up for sharing this great idea . It is so simple and cheap, that I was kicking my ass for not thinking of this myself. Now , I’m thinking of a new project, but similar.
I've considered this because pedal drives cost about $1500. The reason I won't is because I can't mount enough solar on my kayak to power the motor. I tend to spend long days on the water and carrying more than one battery on a kayak is just not an option.

Thanks for the video. You made some really misleading comments. This unit still needs a 24 volt battery to work correct? Different voltage too: 4,2V or 4,35V (HV) per cell for LiPo, 3,2V for LiFePo4... As already mentioned, more importantly LiFePo4 is chemically stable, LiPo will burn (rather explode) easily...
Technically you can pull that motor all the way to the shaft, not by the string but with your hand, tie it to something to hold it during transport so it doesn't stick out.
true. if i drive far, i just unmount the motor and secure it under the yak seat. the motor mount just locks in place with a bike wheel skewer, very easy to take off.
@@ishwithfish Unlocking the entire motor with the black plastic mount portion yes, but if you take your hand, and move the motor shaft itself forward until the motor hits the black mounting piece then it'll be tucked in without removing the entire unit. Hard to describe but I'm able to do that on my outback, and clip it to one of the tie down loops.
If you put a motor on a kayak, you will have to register it and pay a fee. In California a new kayak at $879 will cost you about $80. Then you will need to paint the number they give you on the kayak.
Liked. Bixpy is not twice the cost as it includes a Lithium battery in the package. Take the battery out and the motor is actually lower cost - albeit not as powerful. It is also lighter.
@@2musiclover534 doesn't matter lol. If they able to keep it, it's going to help a lot of people get an affordable option. Fact is torqeedo has overpriced and taken advantage of people. Way too expensive. I'm glad Newport made one. If they lose a law suit it will be funny though
Nice, would be better if they had various options for the depth. I would want mine about 3" below the surface. That would depend on the load in the kayak too. I would be good with 3" unloaded, and whatever that is full load, maybe 4". Just not 1.5'.
Um.. okay.. 1. LIthium iron phosphate batteries are called LiFe batteries for short, not LiPo which refers to lithium polymer cells. Different type of battery. 2. Watts are watts. Rounded off, 1 hp = 746 watts. They are both units of power, different system. If you motor is producing 1 horsepower, then it is producing 746 watts of power by definition - same measurement, different units. Plus accounting for efficiency, if this is a brushless motor then you may be running in the 85% or so range, so you would be drawing about 875 watts or so from the battery or 36.5A of current per horsepower, or about 66A at 1.8hp. Wait a minute. Is your display reading amps not watts? The indicator says "W" though.
Whoa. These electric motors are all the rage with the Bay Area fishing youtubers lately! Makes me want one so badly. I’d want tandem though to take Mimi out. Then again not sure at her age a good idea except in the calmest of days... 🤔

@@ishwithfish Love the channel! I also ordered the same batteries you use on this video. I was wondering what is the name of the cable that joins both the batteries together to make it 24V? I need to order that cable.
I run a 30 pound thrust Minn Kota Enduro with a 20Ah Duracell dry cell. Installed a $20 in line PWM speed controller and I get about 4 hours of battery life. $80 for the Minnkota sure beats $1,000 for the NK-180S. Way too expensive. Be well, fish on.
correct. if it's locked it won't move, same as traditional trolling motors or outboards. its to keep it from popping up when you hit reverse hard, which it does!
I’m a noob to batteries but Question: If was to purchase a (1)Lithium Battery (thinking of purchasing Dakota Lithium) for this motor, what volts/AH battery should I purchase?
you'd need a 24v battery, or be willing to run 2 12v in parallel. Newport Vessels is coming out with their own 25.9v lifepo4 battery in the summer, should be a perfect match👍🏼
@ishwithfish can you lock the motor facing forward? i'm looking at getting the slayer max and i think i would have to use this motor in conjunction with the handle controlled rudder.
sure can! according to their website "Steering cables can be setup to turn the motor like a rudder using your kayaks OEM mounted foot braces, or a pin can lock the motor in a forward drive position for use on SUPs and inflatable kayaks."
I run a 45 lb. thrust minkota. With a 12 volt car battery and roll up solar panel for under $400 on my jon boat. That’s for brand new. If I do a little Craig’s list surfing, I can get the cost down to $150 dollars used motor and car battery out of my pickup. Instead of turning battery in for core charge refund. I just replace the battery in my truck long before it goes bad. I get 2-3 years out of a used battery. And forget about a charge controller. Everything is just a manual toggle switch to run and an electricians tool to check the charge rate and capacity. A tool I already own for fixing my house and car electronics.
I would totally buy it but then I have to register my kayak with the DMV...and I think they now make you purchase insurance if you motorize your vessel...
Registered my Outback last October and no insurance required. You will need to have a sales receipt (don't want the DMV to charge you sales tax again!) or a bill of sale. I called my dealer and they sent me a copy - I only had the faded cash register receipt. Also, you will need a manufactures statement of origin, which Hobie supplied me. Lastly, you will need to fill out the DMV Boat Form 101, which you can download and complete online and print out. Now, here is the tricky part if your DMV office has not dealt with a kayak registration: There is a section on the form that you check regarding how the vessel is powered, which includes an alternative fuel box. Leave it blank. My DMV tried to charge $298 (wtf!!!!), but I politely said HELL NO, that the fees should be less than $60. They said they would contact Sacramento the next morning and get back to me. Next morning they called and said come in that the fee was only 50ish dollars. I think I paid $47 which included the two year $20 fee. So, my boat is good to go until 12/31/21. My Certificate of Registration arrived in a week. If your local DMV is confused, ask them to call Sacramento. Hope this helps. PS - Go to Newport Vessels website as they have a section that basically tells you what the fees should be.
any idea how they are getting the 1.8hp equivalent rating? This electric motor maxes out at 20amp at 24v which is 480watts. A 1.8hp gas engine would typically be rated at 1.34kw or 1340watts. The setup with the throttle and ECOS is very slick tho and safe too!
hi thx for asking, i talked to their product team, they say: On the NK, 1.8hp is the propulsive power equivalent to a 1.8hp rated gasoline engine; if the gasoline engine is rated 1.8hp, then our motor will have the equivalent propulsive power to that gasline engine. There are differences between shaft power, input power, and propulsive power. In general, rare earth brushless motors like the NK tend to be very efficient at transferring energy to the propulsive power at the end, assuming the propeller is properly fit to the motors specs.
There is a guy Kevin Dismuke on Facebook who has been making mounts . Like these for trolling motors and whatever else these look just like his mounts. Cool idea
Not even close to his mounts. This is a Torqeedo replica. Almost an exact copy with different colors. About the only difference is this motor is direct drive and Torqeedo is geared with proprietary battery.
@@johnparker8259 hi, in case anyone's wondering, this isn't a torqueedo. there are no interchangeable parts between the NK-180S and Torq 403, they run at different voltages, use a different motor design, different controller design (wired vs wireless), non-proprietary batteries (you can run whatever aftermarket/compatible battery best fits your needs), different everything. kind of like trying to compare a civic to a corolla, might seem similar but different products e2e.
Cool motor Ish, but the biggest question I have is did you just added a Jackson kayak to your fleet 😳😅. If so, you are going to need a bigger storage space or get rid of the herrings in your freezer 😂

true. if i drive far, i just unmount the motor and secure it under the yak seat. the motor mount just locks in place with a bike wheel skewer, very easy to take off.
The Redwood City, CA boat launch is looking good (fun to recognize as a local)
I use that all the time! If you ever see a short dude with and English Bulldog in a life jacket on a bright yellow Hobie, say hello!
If you put a motor on a kayak, you will have to register it and pay a fee. In California a new kayak at $879 will cost you about $80. Then you will need to paint the number they give you on the kayak.
Where are you fishing?
Liked. Bixpy is not twice the cost as it includes a Lithium battery in the package. Take the battery out and the motor is actually lower cost - albeit not as powerful. It is also lighter.
thx for the feedback👍🏼
facts. However, this seems like a direct competitor with the Torqeedo. I think torqueedo may have a problem now
@@thereelaccountant9246 This is a direct knock off of Torqueedo. Check out their product shot and Torqueedo's. Basically a imitation.
Just not 1.5'.
you can adjust depth, there's a collar you tighten to set shaft height👍🏼
Um.. okay..
I'm guessing in reverse the turning radius is much tighter?
This would be fun on a SUP
I'm sold!!! Pretty cool.
Whoa. These electric motors are all the rage with the Bay Area fishing youtubers lately! Makes me want one so badly. I’d want tandem though to take Mimi out. Then again not sure at her age a good idea except in the calmest of days... 🤔
mimi would LOVE hmb, there's a lot to target. ive seen kids her age on tandems, if you're aware of conditions and boat traffic, it's pretty safe. dm me if you ever want guidance to get you started👍🏼
6:00 25% or even 50% efficiency would be veeeery poor. Where did you get those numbers from?
I'll defer you to the NV product web page for more info regarding efficiency numbers.
Discount still works! Got mine today.
right on, enjoy!
Does it allow pass-through for a power pole spike? Most of these motor mounts prevent use of your PP.
it does not, sorry
Great job on the review, thanks for sharing it.
Doug de maurio aproves THIS.
hopefully i covered all the quirks and features😄
so glad someone said this.
Love the product. A 25% price increase though ($999.00). I wish you could give us at least a 15% discount.
Do you know when they increased the price?
Can you do a video about the battery setup?
ok, ill show you how i set up my 2 12v mighty max's in my next vid👍🏼
@@ishwithfish Love the channel! I also ordered the same batteries you use on this video. I was wondering what is the name of the cable that joins both the batteries together to make it 24V? I need to order that cable.
@@lutor8688 thx man, just get 2 extra 2' battery cables and wire the two 12v in a series to make 24v👍🏼
@@ishwithfish Gotcha, thanks a bunch!
Between you and I we have the electric kayak market on lock! 😈
these fish are fubar😆
I run a 30 pound thrust Minn Kota Enduro with a 20Ah Duracell dry cell. Installed a $20 in line PWM speed controller and I get about 4 hours of battery life. $80 for the Minnkota sure beats $1,000 for the NK-180S. Way too expensive. Be well, fish on.
Dude what a great idea!
If you keep the reverse lock engaged the motor won't kick up if you strike an object?
correct. if it's locked it won't move, same as traditional trolling motors or outboards. its to keep it from popping up when you hit reverse hard, which it does!
Now we need a drag race video against all the Old Town kayak boys! 😂
"i live my life one 24 volt at a time..."
Ish will walk on the 12V boys.
Does it allowed steering to a fix position if I choose to use my rudder to steer instead?
yes, there's a collar tab that fixes the motor in a locked position if you want to steer with a rudder/paddle.
Bummer it's not 39 volts, plenty of available e bike and scooter batteries available in the used market.
Is that a Doug Demuro reference in the beginning?
@ishwithfish can you lock the motor facing forward? i'm looking at getting the slayer max and i think i would have to use this motor in conjunction with the handle controlled rudder.
sure can! according to their website "Steering cables can be setup to turn the motor like a rudder using your kayaks OEM mounted foot braces, or a pin can lock the motor in a forward drive position for use on SUPs and inflatable kayaks."
I have a quick question Ish. Can I use this motor without the stearing and just use the rotor on my hobie compass @IshWithFish?
yup! motor has a fixed position config if you want to steer with rudder or paddle.
Thanks for asking this question, I have a Titan and I was wondering the same thing.
It'd be cool to add a solar panel
I would totally buy it but then I have to register my kayak with the DMV...and I think they now make you purchase insurance if you motorize your vessel...
yup, gotta register any motorized vessel in ca. don't think insurance is required though🤔
@@KidBako ty! great info
Where do the batteries go?
Pretty slick, but I need the workout. Sticking to pedal power.
I got into kayaking for exercise too lol🙃
Ish gonna gain extra 10 pounds soon
any idea how they are getting the 1.8hp equivalent rating?
You sounded like Doug Demuro! Especially with your intro.
hopefully I covered all the quirks and features lol
There is a guy Kevin Dismuke on Facebook who has been making mounts . Like these for trolling motors and whatever else these look just like his mounts. Cool idea
awesome! i wonder if he could make an adapter for my 2012 outback🤔
Has more thrust than my trolling motor on my boat! You need to race Nick fish with his new kayak! Adam can probably beat you both with his pedals!
imagine how fast he could pedal in shorts🤯
Cool motor Ish, but the biggest question I have is did you just added a Jackson kayak to your fleet 😳😅. If so, you are going to need a bigger storage space or get rid of the herrings in your freezer 😂
running out of room everywhere lol
What’s the overall weight
I love my nk-180 with the exception of the throttle controller. Going from a remote controlled motor to the lever style was a downgrade for me.
@ish do you have to register the boat once you have this installed?
yup, in california you have to register any motorized vessel👍🏼
Wonder if they gonna make an 12v version?
At 400 watt , you are drawing 32 Ampere
You gonna need a 8 gauge wire
It is not efficient to run like that
If you want 12V system just get a regular minnkota 12V trolling motor
At 24Volt , 400 watt . This thing is drawing 16A about the highest you want the wire to run
I’ll venture to say a 36V system would be more efficient
I have a native slayer max 12.5, I’m still trying to figure out if it will work if I lock the motor and use steering handle ?
hi, yes, per NV the Native Slayer Max 12.5 will fit. here's a link to the NK-180S kayak compatibility guidestonly.com/sl/en/623ea50f-3570-437c-945c-261aa89ed378/Steps/126261, they'll have an updated version of this on the NV website in March.
This is exactly what I wanted to know. I have a titan 13.5. I would want to lock the motor and use my rudder to steer
What’s the towing capacity of this unit? (Asking for a friend)
from experience, ~1 nonspon youtuber per vid
How is that compare against the Motorguide xi3
Will it work for pattel boat
Reversing is a hoot too ..!
Riddle me this....what happens to the throttle controller after a roll over??????
Is this motor safe for saltwater?
Can you add a moderate solar panel for some voltage assist?
i think so! a sub mentioned there's lots of solar yak builds on youtube, i'm looking at the 24v versions, def doable.
Well presented, thanks.
Hmmm, I wonder how this would work on my outlaw 11.5 🤔
Houston, we have a problem. (Torqeedo voice)
What about battery witch one to use
i believe i link the cheapest decent lead acid option in the description of this vid ($150 setup). if you want to go all out, check out Dakota Lithium LifePO4 24V options ($800+).
I want one for a decked canoe!
Where'd you find a deck for a canoe? How big is it? Was it a custom order, or something someone made? I'm currently doing the same, but am experimenting with cardboard and or foam. Something that's removable so I can still enjoy whitewater fun when I wish.
Add an outrigger to get it stable, put up a roof with solar cells - and off you go...
Would be awesome to see a 40v
Got to register your motorized kayak now.
yup, got to register motorized vessels in ca👍🏼
luckily where i live we can have a powered yak up to 750w, this according to the manual is 600w
did anyone catch the red fish at 8:56? bottom left hand corner?
Sun reflecting off the lens.
Can this be used with an inflatable kayak?
no, needs to be mounted to a solid deck👍
youll want something like this www.boatstogo.com/12-inflatable-moto-kayak.asp
how long can the full battery last?
depends on battery type, mah, kayak, weight, etc, the nv website has a great table with run time estimates.
