I also think that part of the comparison comes from them being some of the few black musicians that we’re getting crossover airplay at the time. MJ’s music is much easier to get into. It’s radio friendly. Prince is a little more challenging because he was pushing boundaries. The lyrics had double meanings and his look always confused people who were looking for someone to fit in a box. Even today i know people who see Prince as a “guy who did antics” because they can’t see past the visuals, but they see MJ as an all around entertainer. Whoever someone likes the best between them is a personal choice. Both of them excelled at their crafts. I’d say that Prince was more of a musician’s musician. When you start digging deep into his music & what he put into it, the level of appreciation for how good he was grows.
