British liked Nehru more than Patel because Nehru's style was very British cosmopolitan, he was educated in Trinity college in England and was generally very friendly with the British men and women and led an extremely Western lifestyle. British also liked Jinnah because of their Bombay Cricket club. Both leaders were chosen by the British. Until 2014, while there was Congress rule in India, many Britisher's still used to laugh and say, "India is still ruled by the family of goons we left behind in 1947" in reference to the Nehru family (which called itself as Gandhi last name just to fool people). Even today, Rahul Gandhi, who has never won any elections, is going and crying in UK and US to somehow help him get power back from Modi and BJP.
