What a gorgeous yacht

Without wanting to be pedantic, but the picture you use to demonstrate an echosounder is of the former British Antarctic Survey Research vessel the RRS James Clark Ross (The predecessor to the new RRS Sir David Attenborough). It depicts an MBES system (Multibeam Echosounder) which is a much more complex beast than the standard single-beam Beam echosounders found on most ships, boats and yachts. That said, some of the mega multi multi million pound motor yachts you cover probably have MBES systems on them. Great content as always though! Your videos provide me with much entertainment
Well that is too bad. I mean sailing boats tend to be more careful because they have a big keel reaching down.
Have you found any pictures of the vessel out of the water because it would be interesting to see what type of keel she has. Keel type can make a big difference when you join the RSYC - Rock stops yacht club, not that other one in the Solent.

Number one rule, as a navigator on the water, especially proceeding with a coastal approach is if you have any questions or doubts, STOP.
I don't know if someone has mentioned this already, and if so I apologize, but there are now advanced sonar systems which are able to look forward and display a 3D image of the seafloor ahead. One such company is Farsounder. Their Argos series is capable of looking ahead from 350m to 1000m, depending upon which model you buy. And they can do this at speeds from 18 Knots to 25 Knots. I've had zero experience with this company or product, so I can't vouch for their performance, etc., but it sure looks interesting. Based on what they present on their website, one of their primary markets appears to be superyachts.
On another note: I sometimes wonder if the owners of many of these superyachts feel the pain of having their beautiful yacht damaged or even destroyed. Because I often experience some degree of trauma when I see the various fires, sinking, groundings of these amazing ships. OK, maybe "trauma" is too strong a word. Let's just say that I wonder if the owners feel any of that, or is it just another item among dozens or thousands of details in a very busy life?
Because that would be a shame.

I worked on many tugs and barges . No one puts oil boom around a vessel if there isn't a leak somewhere .

It reminds me of the sister ship Legacy that grounded in key west after hurricane Wilma.
A shame this happens to a lovely older Perini Navi. Good steel hull but....deep draft keel could have caused major issues. Appears they're pumping quite a bit of water out of her. Best of luck getting her safe!

Just been floated and pulled off the reef and under tow.
60 meter class vessel out of Jaya Shipyard Singapore - 2000 to 2004 era of AHS
Pilot error... no excuse with the amount of technology that is available these days plotters side scan bottom machine etc and knowing how much you draft on your own vessel and if the master left the helm on the hands of someone unqualified it still reverts back to human error
Forward-looking sonar is available and is found on many expedition yachts that may travel to poorly or uncharted destinations.

Electronic charts are notorious for not showing all the details on a paper chart....depending on screen size and scale magnification. Pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.
I could not agree more...i still insist on paper charts to back up electronic....and that critical pencil line that establishes safe passage visually and physically.

There is a lot of GNSS spoofing going on since the war in Ukraine. The west side of Greece is sometimes also affected by this. My point: yes the reef is marked but if you sail solely on GNSS and are unaware of any position inaccuracy you can easily end up on a different location that what your digital maps tells you.
Just sailed past (19/8/24), there are 3 big pumps at work so she is clearly taking on water 😢

The problem with Navionics charts is that you could easily have chosen the wrong water level settings, like skip all depts up to eg. 20m etc. Scary if you are new to it. I discovered the error by checking my paper charts and learned it that way.
With all the technology available for shipping I am surprised that any yacht or ship hits a well chartered area.
Another one, stop using sat-nav. 🤦♂ I dont know how there are so many running aground of on fire. Thanks for sharing 2x👍
States the draught is 3.35 meters and the reef is clearly marked at more than 4 meters
Echosounder is a device that tells you "you are now aground". Old saying among hydrographich surveyors...
They invented forward sonar for a reason

I know this spot, it is well marked on charts and this is almost possible to stand on the reef, which cannot be seen above water. No excuses for this poor seamanship.
