My theory - When Jon said "Hellen, was that a lie?" he was in fact bluffing. But it was enough to make Helen scared, when he talks about this strand, this thread, this genuine untruth, he is just embellishing it to sell her on it. Once she feels fear, that's it, the eye can feel that fear and lock itself on. Likewise, when Gertrude gave Michael the "impossible map" to lead to the center of the spiral...she too was lying. She couldn't map the place from never having been inside, but Michael trusted her SO much, that when she lied and said she had a map, he believed it. After all, what's the spiral to do in response to a lie? Tell the truth? that's against its nature. If he thinks the map works, to prove it wrong would be to reveal to it truth....both Gertrude and Jon trap the spiral into a position where it can either lie and destroy itself, or be honest and live.
Really good thinking! I also think that in the Distortion's case, the lie being its undoing is because it CAN'T tell genuine lies, only tell half-truths and omit certain details. The Distortion is all about gaslighting, making you constantly second guess them and wonder if their friendship is real or not. It thrives on that ambiguity. To tell a genuine untruth is to break that illusion and give the Eye something solid and objective to lock onto. Helen can't shift into something new because now the Eye can focus on the factual knowledge that she told an abject lie.
This and the dream logic of tma. As long as they are convinced it could happen, it might have to be both, it might be sufficient if only hellen or jon belive in it, it can happen

You really nailed the vibes and architecture (or lack thereof) of Helen's corridors. I also love the expressions you gave the characters, they are very well done

Maybe my favorite moment in the whole podcast, and it's the first TMA animatic I've ever seen! BRAVO! It was AMAZING! I had imagined those shuffling noises as the room shaking/flickering and it suddenly being someplace new, but turning hallways make so much more visual-sense! I especially loved your depiction of Helen. Her design perfectly aligned with her demeanor, and you perfectly captured her character in the expressions and body language. It felt like I was experiencing it for the first time... Recognizing her lie a MOMENT before Jon calls it out, and hoping that the mechanics of the world are abstract enough that THIS singular misstep will be enough of a focus to unravel her... and oh how bittersweet it is. Loved her and hated her; She was exactly... Herself.

To be honest, I kind of feel bad for Helen. All it did was help him, like give him doors, occasionally advice, was nice in general, and was probably one of the very few monsters who wanted to kill Jon. And he still just wouldn't trust it and because of him, their possible friendship ended up falling apart faster than an IKEA sofa. (Jsyk I haven't watched past Watcher's Crown ritual bit yet so idk if anything's changed. idk, I'll probably be back 🤪)
