- Tennessee Ernie Ford sings the classic folk song, "Shenandoah" on The Ford Show, March, 9, 1961.
Many artists have covered the song, but Tennessee Ernie Ford released the most notable and popular version on his 1959 album, "Shenandoah". This live version from The Ford Show is heartfelt and inspiring.
This live recording appeared prominently in the popular video game "Fallout 76." The game also included the Ford's renditions of the miner's anthem "Dark as a Dungeon" and "Sixteen Tons." All three songs play on the game's Appalachia Radio
Ford's original recording also appeared prominently on "American Dad," Season 11, Episode 10, "The Two Hundred."
About Tennessee Ernie Ford
Born Ernest Jennings Ford on February 13th, 1919 in Bristol, Tennessee, Tennessee Ernie Ford has made an indelible impact on America and the world through his unparalleled accomplishments in radio, records and television.
Throughout his legendary career spanning over 50 years, Ernie Ford's early successes as a radio personality led to his signing with Capitol Records in 1949. Through 1976, he released a total of eighty-three albums on the label--and literally scores of single records, including his classic version of Merle Travis' timeless anthem to the working man, "Sixteen Tons"...at the time of its release, the fastest selling single in Capitol's history.
About The Ford Show
On Thursday night, October 4th, 1956, NBC premiered The Ford Show Starring Tennessee Ernie Ford.
As prime-time's # 1 half-hour variety show for five years, The Ford Show featured all the ingredients of the top variety shows of the day; Hollywood's greatest guest stars, top-of-the-line production, and terrific music. But one simple element separated it from all others...Ernie closed virtually every show with a hymn, a spiritual or a song of faith. For the time, it was a bold and powerful statement for a popular entertainer of Ford's stature to be making on live television, especially in the face of the initial objections from Madison Avenue and the network. But it was a statement that would become the trademark of his career, and in many ways, the mark of his life. It would earn him the distinction of almost single-handedly bringing inspirational music into the mainstream of American entertainment...an enduring legacy of the lasting impact that one man's expression of faith can have on millions of people.

Ernie Ford puts more soul into the first few phrases of this song than a lot of singers put into their entire career. Geez I am so glad to have found this.
Well said lad, well said!
Spot on!!
The right man for this beautiful song!
As am I!
That's because a lot of singers have sold their souls.
I was with Ernie and his wife when he died in VA. A Christian gentleman and faithful husband..Glory be to God for all things.
WHAT! AMEN! WOW!!! Thanks for sharing this! Hallelujah!
Aber als junger Mann warf er Bomben auf unschuldige Frauen und Kinder, die jämmerlich verbrennen mussten. Möge Gott seiner Seele gnädig sein.

The song originally is about a mountain man who falls in love with a Native American princess. Shenandoah is the name of her father the tribal leader. The mountain asks the princess to meet him on the bank of a river to run away together. Instead Shenandoah moves his entire tribe. The song is the mountain man calling to Shenandoah to please come back. The song evolved into a sailing song......."the topsails shiver"....it relates to every sailor who feels the loneliness and leaving at sea.
Hey thanks for that! Very important info.
Hey man, I REALLY Loved 1984 Great book. Only one thing though: it was supposed to be a fucking CAUTIONARY tale and now all these numbskulls seem to think its a Prescription for Utopia!
So in the end: bad book.
Finally someone who know the story of "The Wide Missouri"and correctly has Shenando as an Indian chief and not river in Virginia.
Thank you, George, you are very correct. Shenando is an Indian Chief and not a river. The river is "The Wide Missouri," The piano music of 50 years ago has a bass sound that reminds me of the roll of a river. Yes, I know the sound, I grew up on the banks of the Mississippi River and lived for 6 years on the banks of the Missouri. If you don't believe the Missouri can be wide, ask some of the Farmers who were flooded by it this year when the River flooded and found its own path, the one before man tried to control it.
George Orwell Thank you very much
Ernie Ford is honestly most underrated singer of the gold ages. He should’ve have bigger popularity.
Wasn't he very famous in his lifetime?
Who told you he was underrated..
Well, yes and no. I certainly agree that Ernie Ford was an impressive singer. I enjoyed all of his artistry. But there were many impressive singers in that era. Some, like Ford, had their own TV shows. Some stuck to singing for records. We were lucky to have had them. We’re also lucky to have their recordings available to us today.

Agreed. He has a beautiful voice.❤
Ernie was extremely popular...
One of my Papaw's favorite songs. He passed away this evening in his sleep at 91 years old in the house he was born in. He would sing this to my brothers and me when we were small. I will miss you, Papaw.

@adolf anne hitler frank my voice is much like his as well. I'm repeatedly told to start recording songs and been told I should be on the radio. If I ever do record something, this'll be one of the first ones I do.
@@rhiahlMT yes 16 tons is great song, Ford sang very well. Original is by Merel Travis..
My wife loved this song. She died of Breast Cancer in 2019. It's very sad and I can hardly hold back the tears when I listen to it. The song reminds me of the Civil War; I could picture some soldiers singing this around a campfire.
If you never watched the movie "Shenandoah" with Jimmy Stewart you may enjoy it as the theme is played throughout the the movie which takes place during the Civil War. It's not so sad if you look at all sides, and what the tune represents. Am sure your wife saw much beauty in this tune, musical or with lyrics.
Hope you’re doing well buddy
I am so sorry for your loss. As a widow who is battling kidney cancer for the second time, I understand your pain. And, yes, panic. The thought of never knowing someone like I knew, and loved, my husband tears at the fabric of my soul.
I will not tell you that the pain gets better but I will tell you that you will get used to it.
My son is a Civil War reenactment and they occasionally sing this around the campfire at night.
Stay strong and be well.
Reenactor, not reenactment. Stupid autocorrect!
Your story is touching and heartfelt and, yes, watch the Jimmy Stewart before the woke left cancells it. Thanks for sharing.
One of the greatest voices we’ve ever had. What a gift.
No hype, no big band, no glitter, no gold,
just sheer voice and a from the heart performance.
Nothing better.
He had a great, deep, but soft voice. Although he was a big star, I always felt he was somewhat underrated. He was all class, though.
If he didn't have that pencil thin moustache he wouldn't look like a quintessential bad guy...maybe that was the one thing holding him back
I don't understand how people could think he was "underrated"? With a voice like his...❤

I guess anyone who grew up by a river can identify with this. I did. My river was my playground for many many years. A Tom Sawyer and a Huck Finn I was and never wanted to grow up and probably never have. I still go back and look at those places from more than a half a century ago and still feel I'm there again. Hey... This is a beautiful song and is sung magnificently. Pardon me reminiscing to begin with. But isn't that one of the most wonderful qualities of great music and of beautiful song? That it can take you back and put joy in your heart and it can do it over an entire lifetime.
The name Shenandoah refers to an old Indian. It was a poem written by a young Indian for his new father-in-law after he had married the old mans daughter. supposedly the poem was a hit even then. It was not set to music till many years later.
Oh Reeni Longworth I long to see you.
Away, you dirty river.

Tom Tee Oh so beautiful.xx
He was a classy guy. My girlfriend was waitress in a restaurant where Ford and his friends were having dinner. Dinner ran way overtime, and our date was pretty well ruined. He came over and apologized to me and he tipped her $50 when that was a couple of days wages.
Adjusted for inflation that is about 300-400 dollars for anyone curious.

What a voice full of mourning, rejoicing, pain, and song all at once...so beautiful.
You described it splendidly.
Awesome.
There are times when the mind takes a journey to That Place that fills the senses. To a place that holds all those things that are precious. A place that leaves all the trials and troubles that follow me. Listening to the words, feeling the Music and understanding what it means to cross over that Wide Missouri. And to Cross Over, there are those to be left behind, sadly. A choice that can't be undone, O' Shenandoah.... I Long...Blessings, As Always...
The 218 people who thought this song rated a thumbs down must be deaf!
He had a TV show in the 1950s and I always loved it.
June 29th, 2024. A beautiful rendition of a really special composition. Love to All. ❤
This performance harkens back to a time when people who couldn't sing didn't.
I grew up on black lake bayou in the back woods of Louisiana, in every southern boy's mind is a Shenandoah, a body of water that takes us back to those days of skipping stones and fish caught on a line with a pole.... years later, in the Army, freezing on the DMZ in Korea or covered with mud in Hohenfels, Germany as the rain drizzled cold into my bones this song brought the misty Bayou back to me... I thank the Lord God for Tennessee Ernie Ford. We all loved him.
In every girl's too. I'm sitting here bawling like a baby listening to him. It just evokes memories of simpler times and love of family and home.

Jennie Lind was a famous Swedish opera singer with a legendary voice during the 19th century. Sadly, sound recording was unavailable at the time, so no one can hear her today. Well into the 20th century, there were people who had heard her, and they swore that none could sound like her. She undertook an extraordinarily popular concert tour of the USA in 1850.

One of the outstanding this about Ford's performance was not only the humanity, but that the performance was recorded in one take, done live on his show. There was no post-production sweetening. It was Ernie at his wonderful best. We all miss him a lot.
Oh Shenandoah, I hear you calling, Hi-o, you rolling river. Oh Shenandoah, I long to hear you, Hi-o, I'm bound away. 'Cross the wide, Mis-sou-ri. Mis-sou-ri, She's a mighty river, Hi-o, you rolling river. When she rolls down, her topsails shiver,

The Real Deal, Ernest Jennings Ford was an American Original, whose likes we might never see again. Possessed of a phenomenal bass-baritone voice, he became an American icon with the release of his famous "Sixteen Tons" in 1955, which I played on the juke box as a young sailor. In the year 1965 Ii had the pleasure of seeing the live telecasts of his daily San Francisco production on local television station KGO-TV. In one particularly delightful presentation, he performed several arias with his old voice teacher from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Opera, and ---- MYGOD! ---- what a powerful voice this man projected! He will never be replaced, either on the music scene or in the hearts of those who were privileged to hear him sing.
Who are you?
Oh what lovely back story to add, I thank you most sincerely for sharing those memories with us.
Your shared memories of TEF, his daily San Francisco broadcast program and the episode w/ his former operatic teacher will forever be a part of my thoughts that come to mind when I think of this great voice in a fine and talented man.

Oh so this is why my great grandmother loved Ernie. Ernie Ford was a true American.
you can never get it out of your head. love it.
There are a number of songs that no matter how talented you are, you will not covey the message and delivery that the song deserves unless you truly feel the lyrics. You may be the best singer in the world, but you will never capture the emotion of a song. You may hit every note perfectly, but someone singing a song such as this imperfectly will put anyone to shame that is pitch perfect if they feel the words and emotions that the song conveys. Very few songs such as this nowadays that can be applicable.
What a beautiful deep voice he has. ❤❤❤

well,then you've a harder heart than myself.
Love Paul Robeson. One of the greatest figures of the twentieth century. And a phenomenal singer. But a question! Isn't THIS performances by Tennessee Ernie Ford one of the greatest bass vocals you have ever heard? This performance is thrilling to me. Why then is Ford not recognized as a great talent also? Cause he was a Country Music star, and an entertainer? Because he did comedy? I think this performance needs to be recognized and that Ford is a greatly underappreciated singer! Love this!!
People who appreciated outstanding voices knew how good Ford's serious singing voice was. That's why opera divas such as Lily Pons and Marilyn Horne were more than pleased to sing with him. By the way, as good as this is, I think Ford's rendition of Wayfaring Stranger on You-tube is even more impressive.
What do you mean? Ernie Ford is recognized for his talents. He has three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, two of which are music-related (radio and records). He was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1974, inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1990, and posthumously inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1994. What more can they do to recognize his incredible talents?

I think perhaps what lIschnitz had in mind was a lack of recognition by classical aficionados that Ford had one of the great singing voices of his era.
Don R Good point.
Don R Yet he was primarliy known for his talent as a comedic actor such as his guest appearances as Cousin Ernie on I Love Lucy that overshadowed his great singing talent. ☺
