  • Schengen 2024 updates for Bulgaria are effective in March, and Social Security and Pensioner Retiree Residency is still an option in this affordable country. If you wish to live in Bulgaria we provide the current opportunities in today's video for residency.
We slow travel the world, often called roaming retirement or roving retirement. We retired early and use Montenegro as our non-Schengen home base. Montenegro is an attractive and affordable alternative to the high prices in the US. If you own a home in Montenegro life can be very comfortable for the average American. Do you want to live abroad as an Expat or Nomad? Are you looking for affordable and viable options? We are exploring the world to see what it's like to live in a country, and also discover if Residency is an option. We visited with our attorney in Veliko Tarnovo Bulgaria to discover if this Balkan country is an option for you, so if you're a digital nomad, a retiree or thinking of retiring abroad we did this video with you in mind.

Do you want to live abroad as an Expat? Are you looking for affordable and viable options? We are exploring the world to see what it's like to live in a country, and also discover if Residency is an option.
We began our retirement in March of 2020 with the intent to travel the world, spending 1-3 months in a country or location. We want to see what it's like to live there and not simply visit, and we want to share these experiences and the costs with whoever wishes to follow along.
The average US Retiree on Social Security receives $1,800 a month, and a couple on Social Security averages over $2,800 a month. A US Expat living on Social Security can expect a great standard of living in many countries such as Turkey, Serbia, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Hungary, Poland, Spain, Italy, Philippines, Thailand, Ecuador, and many others when compared to the living costs in the US. If you dreamed of traveling as a nomad in retirement this video is for you.

But the $64,000 question is still "Does everyone have to fly back to Washington DC and rent a hotel room for six weeks while they apply to the Bulgarian embassy there?"
Until that bureaucrat nonsense has been changed, Bulgaria doesn't want Americans no matter what nice language is otherwise used
It's important to know that the slightest requirement, however innocently added to an immigration policy, can be the poison pill that causes an IT nomad to take his Euros elsewhere. Germany requiring a simple health insurance policy? Ended up being €600 per month with the insurance companies setting up whole departments to tattle on those who don't pay up. Norway wants a simple document showing you were never in jail? The FBI now won't give you that document without having you fingerprinted overseas and Fedex and post escadrille and then they check you against all unsolved murders and, three months later you might get that simple document.
No, the bottom line is an American friendly country will make tourist visas one year long like Georgia and Albania, or make things very very easy without "good ideas" and "nice to haves" added.

I hear your frustation! Unfortunately, that trip to the USA embassy is required for many countries. A friend of mine just retired to Mexico and she had to jump through HOOPS to get there, but once most of the hard stuff was done, she's on a fast track to a dual citizenship.

"The application for issuing a long-stay visa is submitted only in the diplomatic and consular missions at the permanent place of residence of the applicant or the missions accredited in
the state of the applicant’s permanent residence. Persons staying legally in a third country, different from the country of their permanent
residence, may, as an exception, apply in this third country after explaining the reasons thereof and if their return to the state of permanent residence is guaranteed"
      (Source: www.bulgaria-embassy.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/VISA-TYPE-D-VISA.pdf)
Apparently, it only has to be your permanent residence, if your have PR or can get PR where you are at then you can do it from there and not have to go to D.C.

Well, there are many people who have not yet left the U.S. and are looking into travel. For long term visas in foreign countries it would be more sensible to take care of the process before you do long term travel. That is why these You Tube vloggers are so valuable to watch. And Warren and Julie are unique in that they interview lawyers from different countries and film them so we are getting free legal advice from all these countries. However, retirees need to travel before the age of 70 because travel insurance goes up from 300 or 350 a month to one thousand and much higher per month.

I see no reason to apply for a BULGARIAN resident permit that taxes American pensioners 10%, when France doesn't tax your Social Security or IRA or Pension at all. France offers low or no cost health insurance to retirees who are low income. France is also is a country with higher life expectancy.

Im sorry you have had a bad experience, what areas are you speaking about? I know that many cities are not pristine, but we’ve found the people to be kind and polite to us.

As a middle aged couple with a young child, we would love to move there, but it sounds like the only visa available would be freelance as she works remote for a company here in the uk, contract ongoing Very sad as I’m an organic farmer and would love to get over there.
