    I liked the comment about the rhyme or reason behind a Necromunda table and my honest answer would be this: the Hive Cities of Necromunda are built upon tens of thousands of years of past construction. New buildings just slapped on top of old ones, or parts of the old ones are repurposed to fit whatever the hivers needed possibly hundreds of years ago or maybe a dome collapse brought down an upper level of the hive. That's how you can totally have the ruins of a cathedral, a manufactorum, and an abandoned hab block and it still makes sense within the logic of the game world!
    Great video!

    Just to point out, static + modular tiles should be able to be combined as well, so you can get the best of both worlds. Speed up setup & get a few cool set pieces with statics, maintain flexibility & save on storage space with modular

    This video was really helpful. I've got a mountain of GW terrain that I'm going to use to make an epic Necromunda board. Cool insight! I love setting up the board too, particularly necromunda, I will say sometimes I will tailor the board more towards the scenario if I'm feeling inspired and it seems like it would offer particular theme, but I often just build a thematic board then assign a random scenario to it, like you! - Now to share some of my experience playing as, and against Van Saar, I play 9 different gangs including van saar so I feel like I've had a well rounded experience, I often watch a bat rep or watch someone else play van saar and it feels like they just took the box of 10, built them, and since they worked pretty good right out of the box they never explored the plethora of options beyond the box assembly. And over the years this small amount of experience with the gang, echoed by an ocean of minimal experience users becomes gospel.
    my van saar gangs do very good in ZM set ups, they have tons of good options right off of creation like PLASMA PISTOLS on gangers, for champs, right out of gang creation, Melta Guns, Grav Guns and Plasma Grenades will absolutely decimate anything, and these are specifically useful at close range and around corners (blast on grav and plasma nades), even with just a mildly thought out group activation, on a ZM style board you can easily destroy an entire flank, or 1/3 to 1/2 the opponent's fighters in a single activation.
    Those are just comments on basic guns/gear available immediately on gang creation, add in trading post and player skill and tactics and van saar are just as strong in ZM as they are in SM and there are more than a couple other effective weapon tactics to discover for those willing to explore. (IE: things like their pets being WALKING WEB GUNS! Literally the perfect counter to any melee fighter, can body block the charge and auto pin groups and the actuall WEBBING is just icing on the cake)
    Van Saar are universally strong, I think it luls people in to a false sense of security when building a van saar list, they still have drawbacks and weaknesses to be accounted for (pricey, lower movement, poor initiative) but those drawbacks DO NOT make them melee bait, my favorite style of Van Saar list maximizes effectiveness at 1"-12" (with the obligatory OP heavy weapon, huge damage 2+ to hit in the back to absolutely shut down any gang trying to outshoot me on SM/AW) , I think we can agree that ANY gang that maximizes damage potential at the 1"-12" range is going to do well in a ZM board.
    Plenty of terrible gang advice floating around in youtube comments, I thought I'd add my anecdotal evidence, maybe provide a counter point, YMMV

    • @MiniatureGameMontage
      @MiniatureGameMontage  Рік тому

      Cheers, friend! I ended up building them basically how the box specifies. I'm not against a proxy here and there if the weapon looks close. They will be hitting the paint table as soon as I get good enough weather to prime!

    Hi there! Great video. It really shows the work behind your campaigns and battlereps! Recent subscriber and big fan of your channel. My group started playing Necromunda this December (just some skirmishes to get a feeling for the game while we prepare for our first campaign). We are probably going for a Dominion (basic campaign) but terrain might be an issue. We do have 2 sets of the Into the Dark (Gallowdark) Kill Team scenery which I guess its kinda ok for an "underhive" setting. Not sure how do you rate those sets. What we dont have are gangways/runways, so very little verticality.
    Also, it seems there's no set board size for Necromunda games (it changes from mission to mission). We dont have the zone mortalis tile sets so we were thinking of grabbing a good mat and using what we have as a starter. What size would you recommend? We were thinking a 3x3 foot mat would make for a decent table for shooty and melee gangs? I imagine that kill team boards (22x30 inches) are too small. And perhaps 2 of them all together (44x60") may be too big?

    • @MiniatureGameMontage
      @MiniatureGameMontage  Рік тому +2

      Awesome! Great to hear. I play just about everything on a 3x3. It kind of forces the action from the beginning. On a larger 4x4 you’ll spend the first turn or even two moving normally. Your Gallowdark terrain will be fantastic.
      You hit the nail on the head, though. You’ll be more 2D than 3D. And that’s perfectly ok. You can always add terrain as you go and have time. Best of luck and I’m here if you need anything. 🙂

    Nice tables. I have been building wargame terrain for a while and I prefer semi modular. It attempts to get the best of both worlds without the inconveniences. Set up and tear down can be really long, so if it's a case of plopping down half a dozen big pieces and then adding scatter , it's a lot quicker and sufficiently modular. Oh and repeating patterns. For instance the mechanicus sets are great, I've built the same big pieces several times each, so they can be juxtaposed many ways.

    One problem with static tiles, although it might just be a problem for me, is that it makes tiles into set locations. If a tile has a lot of personality, that is also a double-edged sword, as it means it's recognizable. At least with modular terrain, any given arrangement of terrain could represent a random place in the underhive. Whereas a Munitorum Crate turned into Joe's Rad-Crab Shack is suddenly _always_ Joe's Rad-Crab Shack. At least for me, it kind of breaks the immersion to see that, between gang firefights, the iconic spots in the underhive have rearranged themselves in space.
    Perfectly generic modular terrain, while less flavorful, also _benefit_ from being naturally disconnected from any one place. You _expect_ every column, walkway, or prometheum tank to look the same.

    • @MiniatureGameMontage
      @MiniatureGameMontage  Рік тому +1

      To give you an idea, each small floor tiles costs about $0.91. So my entire board floor was about $33 to print. Each column is about $0.87 and about the same per wall. That's with a 15% infill so it can vary depending on how thick or thin you make it.
