Very good video. One thing most beginner shotputters miss is the hip drop ("falling backwards") which occurs at the end of load and the beginning of linear. It helps get momentum going, takes the weight off the right leg and helps eliminate "hop". I had a coach work with me on this when I was in HS and I gained 4-5' immediately. It's demonstrated here but not mentioned.
I love the simplicity of the three steps. I massively overthink my throws leading to all sorts of issues. I'm going to keep these three steps in mind and shout them loud during training 😂😂🤣
nice and simple explanation for what seems to be easy but is actually a difficult technique, easy to do wrong with out practice,practice,practice... ty
Good video. The glide is solid. I quit shotput at 17 when I specialised from decathlon to 110mH. Picked it up again when I was 44. After a while I switched to spinning because I was always better at discus and well... I had lost muscle lol. I improved my distance in training but due to lack of time, I was less consistent and it never paid off in competitions, as I had trouble quieting my mind. 3/4 year ago switched back and now I am better at age 48. The spin wasn't a complete waste of time though: it did remind me to stay 'closed' during the glide. I still do half turns during warm up. But glide it is until perhaps I have more time.
As a competitor in the shot put in junior and senior high school the basics were. Always enter and exit from the rear of the circle. Also every time John put the shot he scratched. It would have been nice to see John put the shot once without scratching his attempts. Otherwise showing the glide was well done.
@@masonprice8336 Agreed, in general calling attenton to entering and exiting the circle is kind of trivial. To @TAS Trimmer's point, it would have been nice to see an example of the technique being applied without resulting in a scratch. As is, it is left to the beginner viewer to figure out how to apply the technique without scratiching.

Sawasdee Coach Kyle, I am trying to improve my shot put. I generally throw discus but it is hard to find a field. I wanted to ask, on the release of the shot, does the release come of the palm and finger snap .... supposely off the middle finger? Having bit of pain on the forearm muscles, so I wanted to check..Thanks. Cheer Be safe and throw strong..
just have a question: in 1:38-1:40, John did not do well to stop. as a beginner of glide, I also have this question, I just cannot stop well, the left leg seems useless in my throw.
Sir I have a question... Is it okay to land our foot outside the circle after the throw because I saw he always go outside of the circle after throwing it...
Beast Titan done his homework.

Best and most concise video I have ever seen on coaching beginner shot putt throwers! I'm going to use this with all my kids. Thank you SO much

Hello sir
Sir I have a question... Is it okay to land our foot outside the circle after the throw because I saw he always go outside of the circle after throwing it...
Its a foul, he wasnt use to "glide technique" thats why he went out of the circle.
Nice 👍🏼
Thanks!
Thanks to tqecnic
I wish the teacher would have actually demonstrated the technique, rather that just talk about and explain it.
