I have been throwing since 8th grade, I am now a senior and I stumbled upon this video today after a bad meet in all three throws, this video helped me a ton, I did not realize how much I was doing wrong. Thank you so much !!
Hey Coach, here's a couple items for discussion that apply to both the glide and spin practitioners. There's a UA-cam video that compares early Brian Oldfield when he threw 75' to his later throws when his technique was changed and his distances decreased. Basically, from the power position in the early Brian period, he went vertical slightly before he began his turn into the launch. In his later period, when he wasn't throwing so far, he began his turn before going vertical. Since those days, no one has thrown 75' since those days. Another comparison between Oldfield's technique and today's throwers is this - Oldfield launched WITH BOTH LEGS pushing. Today, the coaches teach to only use the right leg to turn the hips into the throw and then use the blocking leg to go vertical. The result is that the right leg stays bent and never stretches out to help push against the ground to add power to the throw. Of course, since Brian Oldfield's time, no one has matched his throwing distances except Rand Barnes. His reasoning, I guess, was that you can generate more power and push velocity with TWO LEGS rather than just one leg. Another difference I noticed with Brian Oldfield was how DEEP he was in the squat position throughout the spin. Brian was down into an almost half squat whereas most throwers today are barely into a quarter squat with knees barely bent. Is that just laziness, poor technique or what?
I always come to this video to refresh my drills and throws. I threw in Highschool and now I am throwing as a highland athlete, not quite a shot out but a stone anywhere from 8# to 16#. So far I am good with mine but I know I can get better. I have the power but my technique flaws bleed power away. Watching this video helps me a lot. So thank you 🥰
Hey coach i just want say thank you very much sir, you explain every tutorials very well than the others to be honest. This will help me a lot Thank you coach!... Big respect from Philippines
Love these tips. I 100% recommend to people doing track and field for the first time. I use this method for shot out and I’m on varsity now. Thanks so much for the tips. I had no idea what I was doing when I was starting. Lol
Ive really been struggling to get past 25ft, and in order to qualify for the majority of my meets I need to get 35ft. Thanks for this Im gonna try it out next time im on the feild. Hopefully I can get my distance up.

@4:00 Hey nice shoes! I had those for most of my high school throws career. I love the glide. Well done! Emphasizing both the foot turn while landing in the power and having the upper body pointed to the back of the ring has helped my folks out tremendously.
thank you for this break down for beginners. I threw years ago but it was hard to know how to explain it to the kids I coach. I will use this and your terminology often. Thanks again.
Hi yes I would just like to thank you for making a video like this one this was very helpful to me (I’ve never played shot put in my life) I think my coach will be proud of me when u go out for my first practice!

Thank you very much sir. I've learn a lot from your video .Hope more videos to post so that some athletes would know the proper throw and technique. From Philippines
Picked up a shot put ball today at an auction. Never done a shot put before. Went to the strippers drank 9 beers got home and was getting around 21 feet. Impressed by the world record. Will be 47 in a few days.
Nice video, question would you recommend this for a 10 year old girl. My daughter is currently ranked 5th in the nation and competed in the AAU junior Olympics this past year and she has done this just on talent and I want her to become more sound on her technique....thank you.
Hi Keith.. I would say yes... however... ever seeing your daughter may be the rotational technique may also be a good fit as most of the top throwers in the world are doing this approach to shot. From a personal opinion, I try young throwers at rotational first, especially if they are young.
Actually that's a pretty average throw. I have an average a throw of 160ft with the same weight but I have been doing discus for along time now. So you're doing okay
For any one watching trying to get better make sure you throw harder to wear when you throw where you start is where you should finish (never should be facing the front when you get done throwing)
omg thank u i have a school sports thing n today we have shot put rope pulling and javoline n im just doing a little research in the morning so i dont screw up for my house next amma watch vollyball
Hi Coach, I would love your input on this situation...I am going to help coach middle schoolers who have never thrown before. When I was in middle school, I did the side shuffle to begin and then learned the glide in high school. Would you recommend middle schoolers begin with the side shuffle or the step-back for competitions? As I don't think we will have the time to learn the glide in these very shortened seasons due to Covid-19 restrictions (our season is only about 3-4 weeks).

Great question. The throwing mechanics for throwing remain the same for all body profiles, but in many cases, individuals with smaller body profiles tend to be faster so if this is the case, do the step back drill (technique indicated in the video.) This is a less complicated and more stable approach for the beginning thrower. But challenge the thrower to glide as they feel more comfortable. Hope it helps.
All good thinking, however you definitely do not want to have a poster of a straight line.. you want to hunch down in order to gain momentum going into your block and then that arm strike to really send the thing. When you initially begin your glide, you do not hunch down enough. If you did, you would then easily use that left arm, open at a 45 degree angle, and send it to the moon haha! Otherwise good video!
That's a fair comment. "Back to the sky" out of the back. You will hear this comment when I analyze top throwers in this channel. For beginners, it is a good starting point. I will be doing a next level shot put video in the spring and will refer to this position out of the back. Thanks for your comment Cudi!

Good video... Wondering why you didn't talk much about the angle of throw which is very important. I guess 45 degrees is the optimum one.
I have measured many throws and analyzed top throwers in the world and seems 37-42 degrees seems optimal.
Because... you are not throwing the shot from the surface but from the hand sometimes 2 meters from the surface.
