    The director Can Evranol also did "Housewife" which was excellent and more recently he did, "The Girl With No Mouth" which is streaming on Tubi. All 3 of his films should be pretty easy to find and watch.

    The makeup effects, the look of the “creepy character” really unique and super creepy. The way they hint at gross out moments. They give you just enough.

    I love foreign horror films. It's nice to see a horror movie, without having to watch 25 year old "teens" who looked like they just finished a modeling shoot. I haven't seen Baskin, but I've heard so much about it and I'll definitely check it out when I get a chance. Thanks for the in depth, yet spoiler-free review.

    I think that your Martys meets Hellraiser is very appropriate in describing Baskin. I very much thought that the director was inspired partly by Hellraiser along with the Evil Dead. That overhead "through the ceiling fan" shot did remind me of Evil Dead. The story itself I found to be quite disturbing and bloody (not really my taste), but I was amazed as to how good the film looked and the acting was great. For a Turkish horror film, it was technically impressive and I would like to see what this director does next.

    Love the "hell" out of this movie. This movie is a trip through the unending hell of the last character standing. Until he is no longer standing and everything repeats. Again and again and again....

      I love it too! It screwed my head up& it's like a glimpse of what hell is like. The despair& torment was real! Lots of movies try to have audiences feel as if they're experiencing what the characters are, but they fall short. Baskin was able to deliver the horror& it's always going to be a favorite of mine.

    Nice one, Emma. I actually left this movie pretty frustrated only because I felt like it wasted what was so brilliantly set up-I think Evrenol’s depiction of hell has to be one of the best we've seen in recent memory and the villain is truly terrifying. Unfortunately, the plot and its characters, I felt, took a backseat to Evrenol's world of madness. 3/5 for me, still very much worth checking out, though!

    I'll have to re-watch as I have a few questions. What's with the Frog Symbolism? "The frog as spirit animal reminds us of the transient nature of our lives..." What's with the "Dream" sequences? Bizarre but cool soundtrack, they played the song or an interpretation of the theme from The Cannibal Holocaust, did you notice? A bit of a Mind Fuk so have to re-watch. Great review as always. Totally off topic was not impressed with Blair Witch, BS Jump scares that did not work, just didn't do it for me. 31 was fun, more geared to Rob Zombie fans, grindhouse gore.

    I didn't really see the Hellraiser similarity. I'm a huge fan of the Hellraiser movies, and Clive Barker as an author, which is the reason why I watched Baskin to begin with. There is one scene in the diner with a fall into water (trying not to be a spoiler) that reminded me stylistically of Hellraiser, but I don't feel the big "escalation" is Hellraiser at all. It reminded me more of the movie Borderland. I was actually kind of disappointed in Baskin, overall. I might watch it again, though, just to see if I can enjoy this movie in its own right. Maybe I expected too much with the Hellraiser comparison and I'm missing something?

    According to the Bloodbath & Beyond review, a bonus feature on the DVD they watched said there's no real deeper meaning to it and that it's just a cult in the woods. I have a hard time taking the film at surface value, the way the story plays out is too unrealistic and dream-like for me to buy it's just a "real" occurance of a cult in the woods. Especially the ending. I commented about this on their review too lol.

    • @spookyastronauts

    • @knightfaerie
      @knightfaerie 8 років тому

      spookyastronauts My favorite interpretation is that it's a "lucid nightmare." Not a gate to hell, a cult, or anything real, but an exploration of someone's nightmare. And yes, I also gathered that it's a giant time loop, which adds to that interpretation.

    I would call this movie pretentious. It's trying for a Rob Zombie/Quentin Tarantino vibe with a story trying to take place around a bunch of nonsense. Much like Pulp Fiction with scary people having conversations, and then something happens that places them into a world that's a bit different than our own. But Tarantino movies are usually full of somewhat compelling dialogue that fits into a quirky bunch of misfit characters. I would say that Rob Zombie feels a lot like he's trying to riff on, or rip-off, Tarantino movies, and he doesn't ever really get there.
    This movie is trying for something similar, but it just doesn't have the characters of a Tarantino movie. They aren't relatable, nor are they interesting. I know most horror fans love these foreign movies that dare to be not Hollywood. I don't think this movie has a sense of itself. Trying to be something that has already happened many other movies ago. Original? Not in the slightest. Just another Dante's Inferno type idea with characters lacking anything interesting. Characters are closer to Rob Zombie in the unlikable range, and so is the horror and gore.

    Man I wanted to like this movie. Great ambiance, amazing soundtrack, and good creep factor. However I couldn't get past that when the shit hit the fan, none of the cliche characters did anything resembling neutralizing the threat. • @stephenwynde8587

      That’s pretty much how I felt about it. Most of the evil creepy characters are kind of puny looking, like if you’d all stuck together in a group you could have gone rampaging around kicking people’s heads in.

      If this movie could've actually happened and you two would've went through it, you can't predict how they should've fought back, because let's be honest here you would have been scared out of your god damn mind. Trapped in that dark labyrinth of corpses, Satan worshipping maniacal creatures in an orgy of perverted sex, death and torture and being hunted. Your problem solving skills and attempts to fight back would be futile. Let's all be honest here...lol. This was pure unadulterated nightmare fuel!!!!

    • @desmondm728
      @desmondm728 2 роки тому

      @@HorrorCollector1974 Very good point/argument here. I cannot deny the truth of your statement, and especially how I myself would respond. I guess my counter to your counter argument is this. In reality, which all movies get some base from so we can relate and transport ourselves, I could see two extremes of character. 1) A very "sheltered" person that perhaps grew up small-town-usa, and never left. Has never even seem a dead body outside of a funeral. 2) Someone who has been completely desensitized to the evils of human nature. Think 20+ year veteran homicide detective in a murder capital city (Morgan Freeman in Se7en). Now in reality, we could assume a very different reaction from these two upon seeing a horrendous crime scene and/or even a horrendous crime in progress . . . correct? Back to my original problem with this movie and its characters. They are foreshadowed, not as harden badasses no, but experienced and having seen/done a thing or two in policing careers. In summation, we spend the first 2 acts being told/shown/lead to believe they lean towards the later extreme, but when the shit his the fan in the 3rd act the act completely like the former. As you said, not impossible to believe based on the crazy nature of their exposure, but in general "good storytelling," perhaps there should have been more time spent showing us that these guys are really just 1step up from traffic cops and are not at all equipment or mentally prepared to properly react to this, or any extreme, situation.

    opinions are like onions you have to peel away the layers to get to the truth. no deception here this is the good stuff. if you get a chance take a lick off the hypnotoad first to see the true potential. do it.
