  • A recording of the last few minutes of analog (NTSC) video from Georgia Public Broadcasting. While other broadcasters are waiting until June 2009 to drop their analog signals, GPB decided to do it on the former Feb 17, 2009 deadline. This clip is about four minutes of video leading up to the final signoff at midnight. I recorded it off the 5 million watt WNGH-TV signal on Channel 18, which radiates from Fort Mountain in North Georgia. I received it in a room on a high floor in the Westin Peachtree Hotel in downtown Atlanta, 70 miles away. The new 476 thousand watt digital signal also came in fine. In both cases I used an EyeTV receiver, which plugs by USB into my laptop, and supports recording.
[Added June 2016...] To make sense of some comments below, the Ray Charles song "Georgia On My Mind," which accompanied GPB sign-offs for many years (or the duration, I'm not sure), was silenced automatically on this video because (I presume) rights were not cleared for playing it. Since then that problem has been solved somehow, and the music runs. So the complaints about the silenced soundtrack no longer apply. Anyway, enjoy.

I've been telling people about this sign off recently! It was the greatest. I grew up in Phenix City, Alabama on the Georgia line. I'm a rather sentimental person, and this sign off always gave me chills. What a beautiful video montage of the best of Georgia. Wish the soundtrack were here.

Thanks for posting. My dad was Chief Engineer at WCES Wrens Georgia. Over his 35 year of service I have way to many wonderful memories to share. WCES at one time had the oldest running qulicetroube tube transmitter in continuous operation. I spent many days have my dad breaking down and rework them.

Reminds me of my childhood. As I got older and moved out on my own, I'd change over to GPTV right before the sign off each night and reminisce again and again with pride in the beauty that is home for me, so eloquently reflected in Ray's incomparable rendition of our state song. Now, seeing this again reminds me of my dad, who we lost 2 months ago today. I see him in every sequence, and remember how much I still love my home sweet home that is forever Georgia On My Mind.

A wonderful analog farewell! And it's great that Ray Charles' rendition of "Georgia on My Mind" can be heard again.

Takes me back to my childhood. It's just beautiful. I always liked this version better than the newer ones they used before it ended.

Look folks, get a recording of Ray Charles' Georgia on My Mind and start it when you see the waves and sun coming up over the beautiful Georgia coastline. It's like the Southern version of Pink Floyd and The Wizard of Oz.

I was 5½ years old at the time, so I don't really remember this, mainly because I had satellite TV, so yeah I just continued to watch GPB PBS Kids

GPTV always signed off with Ray Charles "Georgia On My Mind. The entire song to video. And the network played their entire old sign off video from the days when all 9 stations would sign off around 1am.
GPB (as it is now called) now runs 24 hours a day/

Well, my PBS station WEDW-49 Bridgeport/Stamford pulled the switch last night. I have cable so the transition was smooth. The station did air a brief sign-off message. But I am wondering how anyone else in CT w/o cable or w/an old school set did in picking up analog 49/DT-52.
And I assume on GPTV's end Georgia on My Mind was playing.

Does anybody know where I can find a video of just the old georgia on my mind video they used from GPTV? I remember going to bed with that when I was a kid.

I remember when the station in Cochran was WDCO-TV, not WMUM.
    What did "WDCO" stand for?

    • @davidmatthewvinotjr8396
      @davidmatthewvinotjr8396 2 місяці тому

WDCO stood for M.D. COllins, a former director of schools in the State, contrary to the belief that the calls stood for Direct from COchran. The call sign was changed around 2006 to WMUM to reflect the city of Macon and Mercer University.

Man, I can't imagine all the money WMG would lose if they didn't block the audio on this video. Geez, and they wonder why people think they act so stupid.

Digital was the worse thing ever for TV broadcast. The government wanted control of all analog because they know it works better.

The FCC should have accounted for the larger trend: that everything that could be digitized would be digitized, including audio and video production and distribution. That distribution would shift to the Internet-a collection of every network on earth, all using the same open protocol, putting everyone and everything on it a functional distance apart of zero, at costs that veered in the same direction-was also clear by the early '00s. Against this backdrop, over-the--air broadcasting by "stations" with limited range was obsolete. Maybe the FCC knew it and just wanted to incrementalize the shift from broadcast TV to a mix of free and paid versions of "content distribution." But the result today is that over-the-air broadcast TV is obsolete, and radio is moving in the same direction. Saving analog was never in the cards, sorry to say.
