First and only time I did that, I backed up a couple of feet, put it in 4 wheel and gunned it. That trailer came out of the water sideways when the one spring shackles broke out of the frame and let the axle turn 45 deg. Spent the next few hours under the bridge welding everything back together. I got lucky and only lived 1/2 hr from the ramp and had what it took to fix things. You just got to love boating! 😁
If I found myself in that situation as a newbie I hope I would look up and find CCC on the dock filming and ready to help. Thanks Cap! Be safe. Great immortal words at the end of the"that's your next new project".
With that style of coupler if the slide that locks on the ball is not lubed well and opened and closed , without being over the ball, it will not open all the way and of course it just sits on top of the ball! And of course you have to check it! The spray lithium grease works great for that! I have cut them off of new trailers and welded on a "Bull Dog", if it's not on the ball correctly it will not lock! The only times I've seen a "Bull Dog" fail there was the bumper and/or part of the truck hanging on it.....LOL! Great, as always, Cap'n!
Indeed... Really frustrating because it's a hidden failure. You can pull the handle up correctly, but the latch/tongue thing won't be open. And additional pressure won't do anything once your hitch is on the wrong side of the tongue. Worse even than that, it's actually possible to fix it by being a dummy and putting your fingers in the danger hole. Never put your fingers in the danger hole.
The tide doesn't look that low. That can happen at some places when the tide is low and the ledge of the ramp location is unknown. Good plan on getting it out, but I don't think the towboat knew what you suggested him to do. The ball on the truck looks older than the trailer so maybe a new purchase of a trailer? Just excited to go for a boat ride. But I want to talk about the elephant in the room... That's not where you should hang your keys! OMG, when he said to go with a smaller ball, that's a recipe for disaster. That won't lock onto the ball correctly.
Looking at that rock you wisely collected I always carry wooden chocks in my car. If you have to jack the rear wheels for a puncture there is no hand brake working. I had a car roll off the jack even when the front was lifted. I always specify a spare tyre also. Our rescue services say they are having a major problem with cars having no spares especially as our decrepit UK potholed roads are bursting so many tyres.
My former step-son did something similar. Borrowed Grandpa's boat. 2 inch coupler on a 1 7/8 inch ball. Trailer came off, hit a power pole. It was Grandpa's fault because he didn't have insurance on his boat.
1 7/8" ball & 2" coupler with rusted chains. Maybe warn half in two from dragging on the road. You never need those safety chains or tie downs. Until you do.
One time my dad, brother, and I were driving from NorCal to SoCal. My dad was towing a trailer for his buddy who lived down south and all seemed normal- he’s towed plenty of times before. We ended up getting pulled over 1/4 way through the drive and the CHP officer said that the trailer was swinging. My dad and the cop assumed it was speed related, so he told us to take it easy and slow down. Just a warning. Now we’re about 1/2 through and we’re in Oakland, at 0800 in the middle the morning commute. Suddenly, we feel a shudder and I look back to see the camper trailer drifting away from us- but somehow still riding within the lane as it moved forward/ started to slow. My dad reacted quickly, he hit the breaks and slowed down to the speed of the trailer. He let the trailer make contact with the tailgate and somehow guided it off to the shoulder. Roadside services just happens to be on the freeway behind us and pulled over to see how he could help. The jack was completed ground off and the chains were gone too. We found out, right then and there, that the ball was too small for the hitch. My dad and I cautiously laugh about this every so often. We always ask ourselves, “Can you imagine what would have happened if it had started to spin or went sideways?” I honestly can’t. All I know is it would have caused something catastrophic. Please- Always check your ball and hitch before departure.
I have a few quotes and questions for this video: “How did this guy reach this age making these kind of mistakes?” Rusty ball & chains. It’s my 3rd year owning a boat and the most important lesson I’ve learned is to keep all my equipment well maintained & inspect everything before heading out. I now do this with my cars and homes. I’ve created a maintenance schedule for everything. “This is why women live longer than men.”
I have a similar trailer. Often times the ball latch doesn't release the movable latching mechanism all the way back. You lower it and basically it sits on top of the ball.
Good stuff - was fun to see it all the way thru to completion - good helping out in your part too - it’s nice when they are open to letting you help !!
I learned a looooong time ago it pays to keep a small can of lubricant spray in the truck. Along with a roll of Gorilla duct tape. And a hammer. And a........ :)
I always put a padlock on the little latch that holds the trailer on to the tow ball if that latch was not pinned down some way you go over a bump and sometimes the trailer comes off
I pulled out my driveway with my enclose trailer in tow. As soon as I straightened out, the trailer tongue hit the pavement. I had it on the ball, but forgot to push the latch down and lock it in place. Luckily the safety chains stopped the trailer from walking away. Cuz, you know, that's what safety chains are for.
The chains snapped? They look fine to me. I could have driven all day with only the chains on. He clearly did something wrong. Not even the correct ball. People are awesome.
Because you are supposed to go look @ the ramp you're launching @. Everyone knows there's a drop off somewhere somehow. Stay as close to the middle if you can't see I guess lol
My guess Wrong size hitch ball Or worn out hitch coupler on trailer I’ve had both happen to me 80mph going down freeway hit a bump and trailer popped off Thank got for properly installed safety chains

"no one wants smaller balls" in deadpan dry tone. I nearly fell outta my chair laughing. Perfect delivery.

Good one, CCC! Real nice of you to assist and good thing you did. It really helped them out.

Crazy to think a little grease would have prevented that whole thing. Thank goodness for him it didn’t happen on the road.

You work with what is available

When you said balls deep I started rolling 😂😂. I can’t tell you how often I use that term!!!
lol:)
when one of them calls out the 2 1/2 inch ball. Where do you get those at?
5:22
The old “someone used my truck” excuse. 🤣
"You're gonna get your finger...", I was already wincing.

Glad you’re back CAP.

Sound advice; I always check my balls before leaving anywhere. Also when arriving, during the stay, well often actually.

Great job Cap. But why did he have the jack down when backing down?
I think he put it down while he was standing in the water.
I hope so 🙂@@tonyjenkins4832
This is how new trailers are born
definitely how they are "baptized."
I have a similar trailer. Often times the ball latch doesn't release the movable latching mechanism all the way back. You lower it and basically it sits on top of the ball.
I always pull my boat out with the jack down when I'm hammered.....
There is also a nut under the coupler if its too tight the lock won't open enough to drop down on the ball.
Sorry Pal WD40 stands for Water Displacement 40th formula.
The joke is still over your head. Flying high.
@@CreditCardCaptain 1 million comedians out of work and you're telling jokes? C'mon man! I'll laugh when they are funny.
You need a net lol
Good stuff - was fun to see it all the way thru to completion - good helping out in your part too - it’s nice when they are open to letting you help !!
I need a body camera :)
Yeah - hands free would be super helpful for sure !!!
funny part is if they don’t put some grease on that ball it’s gonna be even worse, cause WD40 is actually a degreaser 😂😂
You have to be smarter than what you are working with. There is a nut underneath that you can adjust so its a little more loose on the ball
Need more videos from you!
I learned a looooong time ago it pays to keep a small can of lubricant spray in the truck. Along with a roll of Gorilla duct tape. And a hammer. And a........ :)
That there is a HIGH BALL 😊
I always put a padlock on the little latch that holds the trailer on to the tow ball if that latch was not pinned down some way you go over a bump and sometimes the trailer comes off

Nice, make common sence great again 👍🏼
I saw a guy lose a finger messing with a hitch latch like that. Dangerou stuff.
The chains snapped? They look fine to me. I could have driven all day with only the chains on. He clearly did something wrong. Not even the correct ball. People are awesome.
You can turn the ball lock handle and loosen the lip that locks it on.
Happy New Year, CCC!
Happy new year!
I have a wheel chock behind my feet & pace it behind my truck's front wheel EVERYTIME i launch & load.
why do they not put a mark on the dock to show the drop-off point?
Because you are supposed to go look @ the ramp you're launching @. Everyone knows there's a drop off somewhere somehow. Stay as close to the middle if you can't see I guess lol
Every boat owner should have to go to a BOAT RAMP SCHOOL.
Litterally did not listen to you LOL
Trans-Nautical pride of the fleet. Nice TUCK
I always grease the trailer end of the connection. The grease stays in there forever.
@6:10 a gofundme has been set up for a lady's brassiere.
Looks like they need an alignment.
Those are cheap trailer parts, we only use those ones on small boats. Bigger boats have a much more robust mechanism
So, why isn't there a marker for the end of every boat ramp?
Those safety chains look like he stole them off the kid’s swingset.
That's what happens when you don't check your equipment for wear and tear. I am giving odds he never checks the oil in his truck.
Lol Still would use the trusty WD40 over any lithium grease in such circumstances.
Including the WD version
Looks like la,p chain he has for a safety.
The ball size is right. What happened is the retaining clip is stuck up and the ball is not seating. Dirty receiver.
Best part about this video is watching the guy in the maroon wife-beater shirt, my wife thinks he is HOT 😝
Freezing water and balls deep. Dose that = blue balls?
🤏 ⚽️ ⚽️
WD-40 water displacement formula 40 made for nasa
😅😂
We did it 40 times. Wd40
If there is a best case sink scenario its trailer only
WD.......lmao......Water Dispersion
There's no way the chains were attached.
1 7/8 worn down over the years over a 2 inch…
lmao, people with the wrong sized balls !!!
move the truck back a little
That was a costly lesson leaned about a cheep are they come. He got REAL lucky.
Are you serious there is a nut to loosen up the coupling
water displacement-40
If it don't fit... put the 2" trailer on the 1- 7/8" ball. Drive slow, gitter home.
Looking how rusty the ball hitch is, probably be a good idea to buy some new ones. Rust will make the circumference of the balls smaller
not so bad; it coulda been trailer AND truck
These people should not be allowed to operate a boat
6:08 that woman needs to go to Walmart and buy a bra!!!!!!!!!
My guess
Wrong size hitch ball
Or worn out hitch coupler on trailer
I’ve had both happen to me
80mph going down freeway hit a bump and trailer popped off
Thank got for properly installed safety chains
I don’t believe it was ever seated and on the ball
So, he hasn't a clue how to tow. This could have been a 1 minute video.
C'mon....you said the water is cold there....in Florida? no frickin way....over dramatic
That 5.4 knock is the next project
