- Old Salem is a historic district of Winston-Salem, North Carolina that was originally settled by the Moravian community in 1766 .This small city features a living history museum (operated by the non-profit Old Salem Museums & Gardens, organized as Old Salem Inc.) that interprets the restored Moravian community. The non-profit organization began its work in 1950, although some private residents had restored buildings earlier. As the Old Salem Historic District, it was declared a National Historic Landmark (NHL) in 1966 and expanded in 2016.The district showcases the culture of the Moravian settlement in North Carolina during the 18th and 19th centuries, communal buildings, churches, houses, and shops.

Recently had a short visit to Old Salem. Bought a few items from the bakery which were delicious. Saw the cemeteries which for there time were well organized. I will go back and try and take pictures. Thank you for a good tour!

Fun little bit of info: in 1937 a new bakery started near the old Salem bakery. They were not expected to succeed at all. That bakery was Krispy Kreme 😁. I’ve lived in Winston-Salem my entire life, that’s one of my favorite bits of info.

Unfortunately, the Salem Tavern restaurant is closed now. They had amazing food.

The other cemetery is probably Salem Cemetery. Very spooky at night! God’s Acre is where they used to hold the Easter Sunrise service. Don’t know if they still do that or not.

At the beginning of the video, as I'm walking, this is the welcome center parking lot. Ample parking and Old Salem is directly across from there. Hope that helps. 🙂

old salem is surrounded by the projects..i am surprised they havnt burnt it down..
