I'll bet there's a college, university, or community theater near you that does the occasional R anH production...that's how my Mom introduced them to me.
My Grandmother would take me all over to see Rodgers and Hammerstein plays when I was a child. She would have every Broadway show blasting on her giant stereo every day also.I would dress up and sing and dance and she would clap and we had such a wonderful time always. I know the lyrics of the shows like the back of my hand to this day. She didn't have much when she died but she left me a wonderful gift one could never buy. The gift of music and orchestra ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I miss her dearly but the memories are here to stay.
Outstanding physicality. Rivals the numbers from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Beautiful costumes, too. The dresses look like they're dancing themselves.
The lady with the operatic voice is Broadway star Claramae Turner. Also, Barbara Ruick, who plays Carrie Pipperidge and has some major bits in this song ("The sheep aren't sleeping anymore.") met and married a pianist in the 20th Century-Fox orchestra named Johnny Williams. Two decades later, Johnny became John and the musical themes for Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader were written.
@@williamsnyder5616 Claramae Turner also did opera apparently. She sings “June” brilliantly in the film of “Carousel”, as well as “You’ll Never Walk Alone” of course, but interestingly one of her verses in “This Was a Real Nice Clambake” wasn’t used in the film, but is the only verse on the Command vinyl LP recording, in which she also sang Nettie. Also, the character’s name in the stage show is Nettie Fowler but for some reason it was changed to Nettie Jordan for the film, which is still plausible as she is Julie’s cousin. The role of Nettie is quite often done by an opera singer but in a recent revival Shirley Jones actually performed it!
Mom always had her kitchen radio tuned to WOR radio, New York. The radio would go on at 7AM & go off at 5PM. She would spend the morning with the "Rambling with Gambling" show. Every year, towards the end of May, I would start thinking of the lazy school days ahead & summer vacation. I especially looked forward to June 1st every year, just to hear this song! It was my personal & highly important, grade school tradition. Thanks Mom! Love you Mom. Think about you all the time. Miss you...

The choreography and the level of skill required is out of this world - those dancers are just incredible - you would be hard pushed to compare it to anything these days - so much strength agility and poise - must have taken forever to shoot. When those guys jump up onto the railing after already having done all those gymnastics on the rooftop is nothing short of olympian gymnastic techniques. Kudos to their ability and the choreographer its quite breathtaking.
This number is one of the greatest song-and-dance numbers ever to grace a film. Maestro Alfred Newman does a great job conducting the 20th Century Fox Chorus & Orchestra and vocal soloists Claramae Turner and Barbara Ruick in an outstanding performance.
Fun fact: Barbara Ruick met a young pianist in the 20th Century-Fox orchestra and married him. His name was Johnny Williams. Later, he became better known as John Williams!
All of three theaters were affiliated with showman and imagineer Samuel Rothafel: The Roxy, The RKO Roxy (later named the Centre Theatre) and finally the largest: Radio City Musical Hall.
@@dianneyoungblood689 This number and a few other parts were done in Boothbay Harbor Maine, and other parts of the film were done in Camden and other Maine areas. He was most likely inspired by Michael Kidd, who choreographed “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” which involved some athletic tricks in the dances including the “barn raising”.
Rod Alexander also married Bambi Linn, who in 1943 had appeared in the dream ballet of “Oklahoma!” in both the show and on film, and she was Louise in the original 1945 stage production of “Carousel” (Susan Luckey later was in the film version in 1956).
