Thanks for sharing I LOVE this live version her voice is so clear and good. Never heard it until I found it on Kirsty's homepage linked to here. This is my favourite song of hers. For a 19-20 year old at time she wrote it in 1978 it shows an extraordinary musical talent. Apparently the Beach Boys Good Vibrations and its layered harmonies is what inspired her to do this song. She used her own voice for backing vocal and layering it similarly which shows she had a clear idea of how a song should sound and the technical side. I was astonished at the amount of covers of it on her homepage by so many artists and bands around the world. Her Music live on to new generations. Kirsty would have been 66 this year; doesn't time fly.
Love hearing this. And for those who don’t know, she died in a boating accident where she pushed her son out of the way of a speeding boat, getting struck in the process. She’s a brilliant talent but one helluva heroic mother. I felt close to her through her music and miss her more than so many others that have gone. She was the best of us.
Brilliant woman...a little Brian Wilson, a little Elvis Costello. Being herself in all her uniqueness. She really didn't care, and how rare is that? RIP Kirsty
Some time ago I rewrote this song for LGBT couples. I give my consent to anyone who wants to record it - without editing the text. I'm not a singer or I'd do it myself. Here's the lyrics: Hey Baby, got a hold on me Our love will last from now until eternity Hey baby don’t you leave me now It’s you and me alone but we’ll make it some how No they won’t listen to a word we say And their arms don’t open and they keep us at bay They don’t wanna know about us cuz they’ve never heard of love Hey Baby, gonna make it thru I couldn’t live this lifetime if it wasn’t for you But baby they just want us to go They keep us in a blindspot so they don’t have to know About us or listen to a word I say And their arms won’t open till I send you away No they don’t wanna know about us cuz they don’t know a thing about love Hey Baby, you just listen to me We’re not the ones in trouble now, just wait and see Cuz, Baby, you know what they’ve done? They’ve turned the world against us, but with God & His Son On our side, we’ll never be alone again They don’t wanna hear about us They don’t know the Golden Rule is Love Hey Baby, gonna make it last We’ll focus on the future and we’ll throw out the past Hey Baby, now you’re in my heart We’ve got it like a marriage and with all the good parts So I won’t listen to a thing they say Till their arms are wide open and they say we’re okay If they don’t wanna know about us, it’s cuz they’ve never heard of love No I won’t listen to their tired lines Cuz they’ve closed their hearts as they’ve closed their minds And they will never hear about us, cuz they don’t care a thing about love
Recordings from a live performance have a much different sound, due to a variety of reasons. Let's celebrate the life of Kirsty, who was taken from us too soon...

I like the Tracey Ullman version, but when you hear this you realise just what a superb singer Kirsty was. What a terrible loss.
Truer words were never spoken. Kristy just shone
💯 👼

One word describes Kirsty ... GENIUS!
One of the best singers of the 80s-90s. Taken from us far too soon.

That is rare. Unique in fact. I miss her.
A fairytale of New York is still the best Christmas song EVER!

fantastic version, what a voice! it was a delight learning this and recording a cover with my band The Speedways
We love you Kristy!
I was there at Finsbury Park. She was a bit shy about coming on but was obviously brilliant. Miss Kirsty so much.
I knew the Tracey Ullman cover first (actually bought her LP), but Kirsty's original has so much more soul. I miss her.
Kirsty MacColl
Great song so sad she's gone
❤
Ah, Kirsty....
great song, reminds me of my "quag-mar" days!
I have Tracey Ullman's single but this is the real deal no question Much better production; sounds much more authentic than Tracey's
Some time ago I rewrote this song for LGBT couples. I give my consent to anyone who wants to record it - without editing the text. I'm not a singer or I'd do it myself. Here's the lyrics:
Hey Baby, got a hold on me
Our love will last from now until eternity
Hey baby don’t you leave me now
It’s you and me alone but we’ll make it some how
No they won’t listen to a word we say
And their arms don’t open and they keep us at bay
They don’t wanna know about us
cuz they’ve never heard of love
Hey Baby, gonna make it thru
I couldn’t live this lifetime if it wasn’t for you
But baby they just want us to go
They keep us in a blindspot so they don’t have to know
About us or listen to a word I say
And their arms won’t open till I send you away
No they don’t wanna know about us
cuz they don’t know a thing about love
Hey Baby, you just listen to me
We’re not the ones in trouble now, just wait and see
Cuz, Baby, you know what they’ve done?
They’ve turned the world against us, but with God & His Son
On our side, we’ll never be alone again
They don’t wanna hear about us
They don’t know the Golden Rule is Love
Hey Baby, gonna make it last
We’ll focus on the future and we’ll throw out the past
Hey Baby, now you’re in my heart
We’ve got it like a marriage and with all the good parts
So I won’t listen to a thing they say
Till their arms are wide open and they say we’re okay
If they don’t wanna know about us,
it’s cuz they’ve never heard of love
No I won’t listen to their tired lines
Cuz they’ve closed their hearts as they’ve closed their minds
And they will never hear about us,
cuz they don’t care a thing about love
go away
Glad you don't feel like a self pitying victim.
lovely sentiment, thank you for posting! my partner and i are are getting married next month ❤️
but we'll prolly use the original
Love her. Love the song. But this isn't a very good version.
