It's the Opening Day of the Upland Game Bird Season in Alberta, Canada. I'm out with my Son on his first hunt for ruffed grouse. We're walking along some edges of fields and fence rows covering edge habitat. Stick around for this week's outdoor adventure. Absolutely! The ones at the range had not a care in the world. It's always good to get out with the boys. Hoping the new hunter can bag his first bird soon. Might take a hike for ruffed grouse again over this upcoming weekend. Fingers crossed for us!
From walleye to grouse... Awesome, a fun opening day... It definitely is a magical time of year. Thanks for the hunt and have a great week buddy, Jim ✌️
The cross-over seasons are the best. There is no shortage of stuff to do (just a shortage of available time). My boys are in football now, which takes up a lot of time. But there's so many outdoor activities we can still do. We are having excellent weather for camping, we can still take out the boat and now grouse waterfowl and archery deer seasons are open.... I wish I had more time...
Hi Dan, The season is young with hot weather and good cover in the bush. The birds don't like to move in this. I'm a bit nervous since my cams on this place have shown me that 2 cougars are roaming. I'm a bit worried that the grouse might have been hunted already.
Nice weather for the first day of the new season but 29C would be way too hot for me to be out. Shame you got or even saw nothing but still a good walk out and funny seeing the birds at the end when you could not harvest them, cheers Alan
Hey Alan, yup way too hot for birds or people lol. This week the temperature has dropped down to the low 20s. We're starting to see some yellow leaves. Once the leaves start to fall and the temps get lower, the birds will move around more. Right now they have SO much cover and so much food! I can't wait for the Rookie to bag his first one. These first season memories are awesome.
Hi Christina, Grouse hunting is hard during the early season, usually until we get a first frost and some leaves fall out of the trees. There's abundant food and cover in the woods this time of year. Can't believe we still have temperatures in the 30s. It's far too hot for me to be chasing deer (even though the season is open).
You're right! Loads of thick cover and lots of food. There are not a lot of reasons for the grouse to move. Still, that pup Maxx, he needs the exercise. It was great to tucker him out lol.
Thanks so much for watching. I'd rather go with the kiddos than solo, any day. They're legit my favorite outdoor buddies. I'm hoping the little man can bag a ruffie soon! The rookie season memories are the best.
I just saw your comment so I decided to come to your channel and there’s a bunch of videos I never saw! I don’t know what’s going on with UA-cam. I never get notifications nor see videos in my subscriptions. 😢 It’s so annoying! That being said, it’s still awesome to get out in the woods! Thanks for sharing your day brother, I enjoyed watching!
Hi Dom, thanks for stopping by. Yes YT does some weird things. I don't get alerts often either. What I try to do is spend a bit of time just going through my subscriptions list. Thankfully on my phone app it marks channels with new videos with a little red mark so I'll tap in periodically to see what I missed. It doesn't do that with shorts but it helps me not miss too much. Either way, hope all is well! Cheers !
Chicking King will have some competition with little brother!! Good job keeping the dog hydrated. I'm anxious to see him get his first grouse! Those grouse sure enjoyed taunted you at the shooting range😅.
The boys are already trying to work out who gets first crack at the grouse lol. I think the Rookie gets the first opportunity, but the Chicken King will rotate in for the second one. I can't wait to see the Rookie get one too. The bush is just so thick right now and there's so much food. It's been like 30c last week, although the last few days we're back to low 20s and there's been a cool-down. We're seeing more yellow leaves which should get the birds moving. They REALLY taunted me at the range, haha. There were literally five birds together in that group and they weren't scared at all!
Oh my...the burrs...they are a nightmare trying to get out of Otis!! I'm sweating just thinking about it! LOL Your little man is growing up pretty fast...it sure doesn't take long...bet he feels pretty proud of himself and can't wait to the day that dad hands over the car keys! lol
Bruce, it took 35 minutes to comb and pick out those burrs. Yes, the boys are growing so fast. It's crazy. Can't believe the little man is 10! Crazy. Thanks for watching.
Absolutely! We are in a stretch of temps in the 25-31c range. It's hot! Few leaves have turned or fallen, and there's tons of food in the bush. We will probably have better luck closer to the end of the month . Still nice to get out. Lord knows, Maxx needed the exercise. These days of walking actually helps to tire this busy body pup out.
Nice walk in the bush! Sometimes it like that, don’t see anything. Maybe when the weather is cooler the results could be different. Good luck next time!
I think you're right. We have been getting hot weather. In fact, the next few days, the temps get over 30c again. There's lots of cover and food for the grouse in the bush so they don't have a lot of reason to be moving. It's still nice to get out there, and it was good to recover my trail cameras.
They say Maxx is a Brittany Spaniel. But he definitely looks like a Springer. He will turn two this October and is still full of pics and vinegar. These outings are great for him (and us), he actually rests and sleeps after haha....
That awesome 👍 i remember taking my son at that age. I take it you guys don’t have to where hunter’s orange while hunting? Nice video sorry so late getting to it
Man, funny, hey? Walk for hours & see none. Then later, find the most tame ones ever at the range. 😄 I used to always see grouse at this spot, but we have had cameras up, and I've seen a cougar & 2 kittens. Got a bad feeling that the cats may have picked off some of the ruffed grouse.
Yup, all burrs. Took me over half an hour to brush them all out. Fun taking him out, but it's not fun cleaning those burrs. He was tanked though and slept well after, lol.

Nice outing with your boy. Those grouse know where to be during hunting season! Fun trip. Have a great day.

Sometimes, just a nice walk in the woods is good enough. Thanks for taking us along.
Absolutely! It's good to be out there and not a waste since it's good exercise for Maxx, and I collected some SD cards out of my cameras also.
very cool
Thank you sir!

Thanks, Mark! Hope you're doing well buddy!
@@DCOutdoors I am hanging in there brother
Beautiful day! Fun little video! Hope this hunting season is as great as your fishing season 🤞.
Hope you had a great long weekend!!

Great to get out !! Looks like the dog was going to need a good brushing 😂👍🏼
It took like 35 minutes to brush and pick out all those burrs.
Nice walk at lease 🤙😎
Absolutely! Hot weather. The cold Coke Zero waiting for me in the truck sure tasted good afterwards! ✌️
Oh dang Yep “that’s just the way it goes“ lol thanks for bringing us along. I think we need some cooler weather.
You're right! Loads of thick cover and lots of food. There are not a lot of reasons for the grouse to move. Still, that pup Maxx, he needs the exercise. It was great to tucker him out lol.
very nice used to get a few grouse in the woods back in iowa
Awesome! Do you hunt in the Philippines?
Great sharing your awesome video my friend, sorry I'm a little backward but I will try and catch up, stay safe and stay blessed
There is no need at all to apologize. I'm behind, too, but try to do my best to catch up. Hope you're enjoying the tail end of summer.
Awesome to bring the youngsters along. Congrats on your first hunt kiddo. Hopefully you get a nice tasty bird soon.
Thanks so much for watching. I'd rather go with the kiddos than solo, any day. They're legit my favorite outdoor buddies. I'm hoping the little man can bag a ruffie soon! The rookie season memories are the best.
That's always how it goes!
The ones from the pew-pew range are very timid. Can't hunt them there and they're acting like it, lol.

Hello Dan, hot or not always nice to get out for the start of the season.

Well, it's early. I'm sure the rookie will get something this season. Good luck
Absolutely, Tom! We can hunt Ruffed Grouse until January, so I know he'll bag some. It's just a matter of time and effort.
Nice walk in the bush! Sometimes it like that, don’t see anything. Maybe when the weather is cooler the results could be different. Good luck next time!

Probably told yoiu this. Before but we had an English Springer that looked.just like your pup.

Awesome but hot outing guys, some days they just are not on the move, or not in the right zone to shoot😂
Man, funny, hey? Walk for hours & see none. Then later, find the most tame ones ever at the range. 😄
I used to always see grouse at this spot, but we have had cameras up, and I've seen a cougar & 2 kittens. Got a bad feeling that the cats may have picked off some of the ruffed grouse.
@@DCOutdoors those guys will clean everhthing out, but often will move on eventually
1:33 Bella has definitely been in that spot before burrs all over her from being in the woods playing
2:58 3:05 definitely looks ready to go after a bird
4:08 cheers from all your friends at lower Michigan, adventures love peace, and chicken grease
Jamie, thanks for watching and joining on the hunt virtually!
Absolutely! For a pup, this is the one spot that Maxx is pretty focussed!
I saw one grouse on opening day here and I missed it☹
Looks like a lot of stuff suck in your dogs coat. Was that burrs?
Yup, all burrs. Took me over half an hour to brush them all out. Fun taking him out, but it's not fun cleaning those burrs. He was tanked though and slept well after, lol.
