The level of ready people are for this episode is always in the negatives. “Time for an epic shonen fight!” Dandadan: “What if I ripped your heart into a million pieces instead?”
The dance of the mother didn't happen after she died.... She was still alive during the dance. You'll hear the thudding sound after her last jump, and see the light tilting from horizontal to vertical as she's jumping... She was still alive while dancing. That final leap was her dancing off the building... That's why the thud was there 😢😭
Whenever a manga gets an anime adaptation, _this_ is what the manga-reader are hoping and praying for! (And Promised Neverland season 2 is what they're dreading begging not to see! =D =| =( ='(
This is the type of episode that goes on a list of episodes you should re-watch once in a while, for life. What blew me away about it was the maturity of the direction, it elevated everything from the original material so much more. Amazing episode.
This is what i call the gintama effect. Being able to balance absurdity and comedy with grounded tragedy takes you entirely by surprise and ripping your heart out in the process. This episode is beautiful. The soundtrack in particular was haunting, it was ringing in my head for days after my first viewing ans it would twist my stomach everytime.
It's diabolical how well this story flips between cool ghost / alien fights, stupid dick jokes, and gut-wrenching backstories. Also, the music in this episode should win its own award.
in the manga there's more explicit detail about the situation with the mother and her daughter. Specifically that buying the dress for her was what caused her to be unable to pay her debts, so she blames herself directly for them taking her away. It's also very clearly shown that she's dancing on a rooftop in the rain and her last leap throws her over the edge to her death. Japanese TV is extremely strict about those sort of things, so they had to leave it much more implied in the anime, but she definitely committed suicide.
Put it this way, the manga didn't make me cry but this episode had me sobbing. They did this justice and then some, absolutely stunning. The manga was more direct with her dancing off the building, whereas the show had to censor that a bit which in a way adds to it I think. Fun fact, this was the storyboard artist's directorial debut - Shuto Enomoto did an amazing job, can't wait to see what else he does.
I don't think it's fair to call it a censor. Because if you watch it (and are not distracted by something else lol) it's pretty clear what happened, and from cinematographic and artistic standpoint it's beautifully executed. Showing things in less explicit manner is not always censorship.
@@Carsu12 I just know that Japan doesn't like explicit scenes sometimes. In the manga it was very obvious, you literally see her take the leap. Japan has a very high suicide rate, I suspect that's why they may not want to show suicide so explicitly because they think it may influence people. I think the anime did a better job with the portrayal and it was more impactful, but you'll be surprised how many people didn't realise that she jumped - most of the ones I watched thought that she bled out on the street.
@@bandit_of_trash That's fair. But honestly, to not realise what's been happening when the perspective quite explicitly shifted as she was going off the edge, you either need to be distracted, blind or not too smart. You are right however that suicide rate in Japan might have influenced added subtlety to the scene.
Considering the anime also made me cry at this part whereas the manga didn't, I wonder how I'll react if they ever get to adapting Chapters 153 - 157. Because those chapters actually made me burst into tears, and I almost never cry while reading things.
One background inspiration to Dandadan, that resonate with your closing thoughts about this hopeful nature the show often has, is one from Tatsu's time as an poor assistant. He had struggled with several assistant gigs not paying him, and he was considering ending his career as a mangaka Then he was introduced to very young Fujimoto (fire punch, chainsaw man etc); and early on Fujimoto realised Tatsu was in a bad state, so he gave him money and a day off, to eat properly and a pause from it all. & That act of kindness, after a long period of darkness, became one of the core ideas for DDD
This is just straight PEAK at this point. Acro Silky's backstory makes me more emotional with zero dialogue than most stories that beat you in the head with long drawn out explanations as to why you should feel sorry for them. Yukinobu Tatsu and Shuuto Enomoto's storytelling here was top tier!
If it makes you feel better, the manga does imply that the ghost DID reunite with her daughter in the afterlife at the very least and didn't just disappear.
Pure art. Now this is the episode everyone’s been waiting for haha. What a knockout! It hit us all when we least expected it (unless you’re a manga reader). I figured we’d get a sad backstory, as I feel like this is clearly the pattern the narrative has been trying to set up : no antagonistic character is antagonistic just for the sake of being so. But wasn't expecting anything on this scale. It’s not just about the events that turned this grieving mother into a youkai consumed by loss; it’s how the story was told, how it was portrayed to us, that left me speechless. Every person who worked on this episode clearly understands how powerful visual storytelling can be when used finely. The pacing was spot on, nothing felt rushed or misplaced. The animation, ESPECIALLY the character acting, was phenomenal, and the music tied everything together seamlessly. And let’s talk about the scene with her daughter: almost no dialogue, yet so impactful. Science Saru really outdid themselves here. By the end, I just sat there, absorbing it all. I feel like It’s really rare for an anime to hit this hard while maintaining its quirky charm.
In the manga, they didn't censor her jumping off the apartment building. Also in the manga, it's more explicit of Acro Silky moving on peacefully into the light, hand-in-hand with her daughter.
There is a fascinating adaptation of a common storytelling tactic "humanize the monsters, vilify the heroes" in play, just super interesting (to me). The monsters, to be humanized, give away their power; while the heroes flaws are exposed prior to the discovery of power (i.e. none of them become horrible after they become powerful, they become better because of it). Both of these have been consistent up to this point, it is a change from normal heroic progression and unusual for monsters. It's super interesting to me watching that play out.
Edit: you covered what I wrote her after, but leaving the comment for the algorithm I would say they did introduce us to a point, a taste of this, in episode 4 where we learn that Turbo Granny took care of girls that had died in the most horrific of ways Or when aliens tie Momo up and try to mind control her, impregnate her, and then take her organs There are moments that are horrifying before, and real But that arc covered everything Dandadan is in a short span This gave the emotional side a focus Tatsu has said he can't do just Yokai as he wouldn't be able to write tragedies after tragedies, so he mixed it with aliens and other things So don't expect this to be the last of these 😔
Turbo Granny casually explaining how to give Acrobatic Silky salvation by acting like she doesn’t care. 🥲 I hope Turbo Granny is out there looking after the safety of all women and girls.
If there was anything you didn't like about Aira before, this episode should definitely change your mind about it all. Anime always knows how to hit you where it hurts.
I cried the first time i read the manga and agian re-reading on a physical copy and did it again watching the anime. The single mother sad story thrope is my weakness 😢 Also, i loved how in the anime they beautifully enhanced the scenes and emotions. i love this series but damn they do like their characters to have the saddest backstories 😭
About the daughter still possibly being out there, in the manga as Aira says goodbye and wishes they can be taken to a kinder world a final panel is shown of the mother holding the daughter's hand as they walk away together, implying they both moved on to the after life. Basically we don't know the deatails, but I doubt the daughter lived long after she got took, she met some terrible fate very soon after.
