    Very excited for the video about book snobbery. I hear it too often when people ask me what I like to read and I say horror. I'm a lawyer, and there is a bit of (cough) competitiveness in the field. I call people on it, though. Half my job is reading dry, dense serious sh*t, so when I'm reading for fun I want to enjoy it. Then I ask what do you read? and half the time it's nothing.

    I'm about 100 pages into How to Sell a Haunted House and I want to strangle the character Mark with puppet strings. Other than that, I'm really enjoying it. I'm also reading Don't Fear the Reaper which jumps right into the action. It's nice to be spending time with Jade/Jennifer Daniels again.

    In many ways So Long and Thanks for all the Fish is my favorite of the series. I like that Arthur gets a love story. And Ford's story of the Lizard Government is hilarious. unfortunately Mostly Harmless is pretty charmless and depressing.
    I read Hill House for the first time in 2022. Amazing! I agree that it feels surprisingly realistic!

    I just finished “No Country For Old Men” by Cormac McCarthy and did enjoy it but was a little put off by the death of 95% of the characters, which I was not expecting. I had seen the movie many years ago when it came out but had obviously remembered very little of the story. I want to read “Something Wicked This Way Comes” soon (also saw the film many years ago). It has been on my radar for many years and I recently bought a copy in old paperback finally. I had the same copy which has the painting from the movie poster when I was a kid but I think it got sold. I wanted a nice vintage hard cover but the prices for those are ridiculously high now.

    You know, if you’ve still got some of the 50 books undone when you hit 50…change planets! There’s a rocky world, 2 gas giants, 2 ice giants, and a shedload of minor planets out there, all with local years that are 2x or more longer than ours. Pick a planet whose looks you like, or with astrological meaning to you, or associated with a nifty myth, or whatever. Glad to help. :D

  • @jackthereader
    @jackthereader Рік тому +1

    A lot of Cormac McCarthy has a “so what?” quality. I love his work, but it’s founded on a deep and intentional nihilism that can be alienating.

      @CriminOllyBlog  Рік тому +1

      Maybe that's it. I've just finished editing my review of Child of God and I end that in a similar vein - "there's something here but I can't quite reach it"

  • @scp240
    @scp240 Рік тому +1

    Olly I'm beginning to think you are reading too rapidly to really appreciate some of the classics on your list. I base this on your reviews of Child of God in this video, and In a Lonely Place from a previous video. Without going too deeply into these works, I don't see how you can dismiss the literary merit of these novels not to mention the gripping psychological insight of the respective authors into deviant behavior in both cases. You ask, What's the point? Why would anyone read disturbing fiction about psycopaths, if not to gain insight into the human condition and indeed both of these books are profound investigations into the human psyche, in my opinion. They are both masterfully written, and I would wager that most of your viewers would find them well worth reading. There's no accounting for taste and I don't expect you to enjoy every book that I find exceptional, but when it comes to real, bona fide classics, there is a reason why they are highly regarded by nearly all critical readers, and endure for decades, as these two books have. By the way, Child of God is set in rural Tennessee in dirt-poor Appalachia. Sorry to be critical, I enjoy your channel.

    • @CriminOllyBlog
      @CriminOllyBlog  Рік тому

      Glad you enjoy the channel - and it's fine to be critical. I'm not expert, just someone who enjoys talking about books. I've actually just filmed a review of Child of God where I talk a bit more about my feelings about it
