“Image of the Beast” very much WAS written as unabashed sci-fi pornography. PJ Farmer’s “Image of the Beast”, “Blown” and “A Feast Unknown” were all published by Essex House, a short-lived Los Angeles pornography publisher which aimed to produce “stiffeners” with more literary or controversial social/speculative themes - making it an adjunct of New Wave SF. Many science fiction writers published works during the press's life-span (1968-69), often accompanied by introductions/afterwords by other senior science fiction writers. When the press folded a number of books were in the works, including Delany’s “Equinox” (aka “Tides of Lust”) and Theodore Sturgeon’s posthumously released “Godbody”.
I was inspired to read Shadow Glass due to your glowing review. I just finished reading it and I loved it. There were a few sections near the end which moved me to tears and gave me goosebumps! Thanks for that!
I received my garbaugust book finally and well done sir! I enjoyed your contribution to it very much and the other stories were well chosen. I hope this can become a series but I know it was a lot of hard work so understand if not. Hope you feel better soon.
Hope you feel better soon. I’ve completed the bingo card 🎉🎉🎉 with a different book for every prompt. I’ve also finished and loved Garbology. It’s been a good week 😊
PJF could be a pretty graphic and irreverent writer. His novel "A Feast Unknown" was graphic pornography using thinly disguised versions of Tarzan and Doc Savage. He was a trendsetter for his time.
I'd recommend them. I haven't read many Doc Savage, but I've read all the Tarzan books and enjoyed them. Even though Edgar Rice Burroughs stories do seem a little dated these days.
@@MysteryandMayhem-gr7nn I've read both the Tarzan and Doc Savage books by him. He literally sets it up that every huge literary character is all connected. I know a few years ago they were reissued.
Yeah! The Wold-Newton universe idea has been a favourite of mine forever. His books "Tarzan Alive" and "Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life" are two essentials for his shared universe idea.
Yes, I was tempted to read Lace as I really enjoyed the tv series back in the 80s but it was too chunky for me. I read the life and loves of a she-devil instead and rewatched the BBC miniseries and Hollywood film. I enjoyed the novel very much. It was even more satirical than I remembered. I’ve just posted my review of it an hour ago.
Man, Image of the Beast seems like a heck of trip! I did some research and never knew that the Riverworld guy wrote straight-up weird porn. I may have to seek it out, just out of sheer scientific curiosity. I wonder if this book inspired that mission in Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines (the 2004 video game) where you end up investigating a snuff film that turns out to be made by the most violent and disturbed vampire clan in the game - the tzimisce, who are known to mould flesh into various different things, like tables and chairs. They even change their own appearance to look less human, because they want to be as far removed from humanity as possible. I find the connection really interesting.
When it comes to the spicy books. Wgmhen i wrote an online column of old paperbacks. PJF is not the only big time author who wrote them. There is western series Longarm. That still comes out has a list of people who went in to bigger carrers. The earlier books it was easy to find out who the real authors are. I knew one if them. Abd they would write them for the easy pay. They had to follow a basic outline of at least three graphic scenes. Everything else was up to them. While The Gunsmith series is written by the same author from the start. But same type of set up. They are guilty pleasures.
Sorry to hear the latest Jones’ novel is not clicking. I hope it turns for you after the slasher happens more fully. It is entry-point Jones, which has its merits on its own, and just as entertainment.
Oh, those are some names from the past! I always did like Farmer - and Sturgeon, too. Never read their smut, though. I'll have to put in some effort. Good writing doesn't cover all sins, but it doesn't hurt, and I always thought Farmer was a good writer. And get better! Drink tea and such. 🥶
I love reading about love and romance, don´t care about the sex part. I prefer my romance without sex, but I´m neutral about it in general I guess, if it´s in there that´s fine. Just sometimes a little awkwardly described. ^^ I´ve read some smutty stuff but it´s not something I gravitate towards *a lot*. Also, hope you´ll feel better soon! 🐈⬛ p.s. really looking forward to the 10 books that made you!

Oh fascinating, thanks for filling in those blanks!
Hope you're feeling better soon!
Thank you!

Oh brilliant, so pleased you enjoyed it
Image of the Beast!? Lol. I picked that up by chance and was very... surprised. Yes, that's what we will go with. Utter smut. Good smut though.
lol that about sums it up
Feel better. Just an FYI "Traitor to the Living" is the third book in the Philip Jose Farmer trilogy. Or so says a random newspaper advertisement.
Aha!! Your right. Thank you!

Oh wow! Well done!
I've heard about you for a year or more from Slime and Slashers and you came across my feed so I decided to try you out. Thanks Kelsi!
Kelsi is the best!

I remember that being on TV when I was a kid!
I hope you feel okay! Enjoyed the video, as always 😊 Really looking forward to the video you mentioned at the end 😊
Thank you! It was a fun one to think about

It does sounds like a similar plot
British descriptions are adorable!! Sex and violence book called "spicy" 🤗❤️
😂😂
Just subscribed, and I hope you feel better soon, Olly.
Thank you, for both!

I have a few Longarms, fun series!
There is a graphic novel of Image of the Beast. A very GRAPHIC novel!!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Just when we changed the vibe with romance, he’s back to horror (lol Jk)
😂
A Clockwork Orange is 1971 and can be said to be graphic, not far off the 69’s
True!

I think it’s because I had high expectations after the last few things I read by him
I hope you feel better.
Thanks Sherri!
@@CriminOllyBlog You're welcome, sending you healing thoughts.
Great wrap up! Hope you feel better!
Thank you!! Had a very good sleep this afternoon!
Carry on SF
Here is a challange: read a book from all the countries your subscribers are from :D ( if you can find them translated). Is the globe covered?
Oh that’s a very good question! I don’t know I’ve got the whole globe but I’ve certainly got a good spread.
