Did you notice how Mal recruited Jayne? It wasn't just "Here's more money." Yeah, Mal was offering more, but the way he framed it was, "You're not being respected; you're not being treated fair." As much as Jayne is motivated by money, a part of him (probably a part he is unaware of) wants to be respected (and to be worthy of respect).

@@larrystuder6378 LOL, I just started to comment using the same classic phrasing with my own additions of descriptors synonymous with your own... Kaylee carries goodness and light and caring....... And a strong will of helpfulness. A friendly guiltless "Hi" and as soon as needed shifted right into "let me fix your problem!".
Besides, from Day 1 she's been trying to get in Simon's pants. Teased that she's "always one man short". "Have good sex!". And in Jaynestown was making her move on Simon, offended that he would say he ruled her out for sex, and then having a serious talk about "why not?" on a progression in their relationship and sex with him.
Personally, I loved that as the introduction to Kaylee and it, the initial reveal and her follow up of helpfulness, both perfectly fitting and unsurprising... Just a joy to see how funny/odd her and Mal's meeting was.
My only thought of "hm" to the scene was about her comment about seeing the problem when she was down on her back earlier during sex. Either engines really do "make her hot" or she was Not being distracted properly by surf-boy lol.

Kaylee is pure of heart, not innocent 😀
    That's entirely possible.
And for Jayne "I prepped a suit for you" is positively sentimental. There's a lot more to the things the crew say than just the words.
This episode would actually have worked as the finale (if they'd moved it to the end)

    • @elvwood
      @elvwood 9 місяців тому +7

Yes to all that. As Jayne said last time, "I'm no good with words; don't use 'em much, myself". He does care about Mal (and the other people he considers part of his crew), but he's not going to make a song and dance about it: his actions get the message across.

Wrong. That almost ruined kaylee. stereotypical sluytpriyde BS making every girl a one-night-standing hoar. pretty much hollywood 101 for all female characters since 1980s. that's just one of several similar reasons they're all become weak cookie cutter characters. only thing that makes them different is the superficial, but eventually they all gotta bring their girl powah sass-preening and slootery, which make them all the same below the cosmetic layer. sad.
what makes kaylee instantly attractive to pretty much everyone who reacts to this series is that she breaks from that absurd uncreative trope. well, she did until this episode. probably a design by committe decision inserted by an idelogical quota hire. thankfully, it left no lasting impact on kaylee. was just a "demonstrate the sloot powah!" scene then move on and forget.

I love watching reactors, including you, process this episode. The look of concern and confusion right off the bat, then the sadness of seeing the Captain alone and hurt. Realizing just a few minutes in that there are flashbacks and, in fact, three different timelines going on. Then at the end I’ve seen men get choked up when Mal asked if they were going to be there when he woke up. It is brilliant storytelling and filmmaking. I think it’s probably my favorite episode of TV ever.

The flashback that tells you the most is Jaynes. It tells you why Mal an Jayne speak so openly about how Jayne can be bought. They got him to turn on his last boss by buying him off. So his lack of loyalty to anything but money is a trait Mal knew he was getting from him at the start.

I actually really like the Kaylee flashback, because while it's funny because it takes you by surprise, it's actually perfectly in keeping with her character (she's always been the horny/boy-crazy one), and it demonstrates that being sexually eager/open is not the opposite of being innocent. She's both. What could be more innocent than when she sweetly tells Inara to "have good sex"?

  • @Kavala76
    @Kavala76 9 місяців тому +8

Kaylee is kind, cheerful and a sweetheart but she is in no way unversed or aversed to sex.
"Have good sex" she says to Inara while standing next to Simon in one episode.
"You just want to take a bite out of him" she says to Inara about Simon in "Bushwhacked".
There are also future examples which I wont mention at this stage.

I second that. She is quite attracted to and enjoys all kind of pleasing and sensual things. Besides her crush on the doctor, think how she ate that strawberry in the first episode, that was almost erotic. Or how much she liked to let her "girly"-side out in "Shindig" with the fancy ball, the dancing, the pretty cloth, the "do you think it looks better up" scene with Inara etc.
As others stated here, she's sweet and has a big heart, but she's not innocent in the sense of "prude" at all. In fact she's very open in a hippy/free spirit way.

The title of the episode - "Out of Gas" - has a double-meaning that is often missed by people watching it on UA-cam for the first time. Conventionally, it means that a vehicle is stopped and needs fuel to proceed (which is certainly analogous to the situation portrayed), but the second meaning, that Serenity's crew is literally *_out of OXYGEN, i.e. "out of gas" - the gas that we all need to breathe in order to survive_* is more pertinent, I'd argue, to their situation.

    The shuttle solution:
2 shuttles, 4 crew apiece, Mal remains on Serenity.
It allows Mal to subsist longer in the air envelope based on how many are breathing atmo. Pure math that submariners can calculate based on volume.
Shuttle 1: Inara, Kaylee, Jayne, and Shepherd Book. If discovered by an Alliance patrol, there are no alerts or warrants on them and they can go to any world and find work. Inara in her shuttle is second only to Wash as a pilot. She will watch out for Kaylee, and Shepherd Book can keep Jayne respectful of the women.
Shuttle 2: Zoe, Wash, Simon, and River. Zoe needed medical care, and Wash would not be separated, obviously. Wash is the best pilot; Zoe has the same Browncoat and black-market contacts as Mal and would honor his commitment to keep the Tams free from the Alliance. The arrangement also spared the Tams from Jayne's underlying greed.
Mal showed that he would do everything to save his crew and his ship.

The themes I see here are found family, leadership, and loyalty.
All the flashbacks help to show how these nine people from different places, different educational and socioeconomic backgrounds, even different belief systems, end up forming a family.
Leadership. Can you imagine this happening to the crew minus Mal’s leadership? Especially with Zoe out of the picture, Mal is the glue that holds them all together in order to get done what has to be done.
The last one, loyalty, is the one that can make me teary-eyed. Zoe insisted on returning, even if it meant death. She was determined that no matter what, she was not going to let Mal die alone if it came to that. Such a beautiful relationship. Purely platonic but deeply loyal to one another.

When Mal tells Inara "Everybody dies alone", it gets me every time. She's just letting the slightest hint of her feelings for him show, but the soldier in him has already accepted his fate, to sacrifice himself for even the most remote chance of saving his crew. Actually, you were right with your comment about having faith in each other. Mal knew that their only chance was to split up, give them two chances of someone finding another ship and getting the part.
That''s what I picked up on my last watch through, and what I mentioned in my comment on your last episode, Shepherd Book trying to teach River a lesson about faith. He said "You don't fix faith, faith fixes you" or words that that effect. In this episode he's literally searching through his bible, trying to find something to give him hope, to restore his faith, and it's River's turn to console him. Except her broken mind causes her to tell him how she thinks they're really going to die, freezing to death instead of gasping for air, which isn't exactly comforting to Book.
This episode is by far my favourite, probably my favourite of any show I've ever watched. The direction and cinematography is so good, the writing is excellent, and each and every actor's performances are perfect. I love how they transition between the different timelines, there's some very clever tricks of the camera and editing. The way they use lighting to distinguish between the "now", "how we got here" and "flashback" timelines. The "now" timeline is very ambiently lit, mostly long streaks of shadowy blue from windows out of shot or fluorescent emergency lighting. The "how we got here" timeline starts out warmly lit to represent the homeliness of Simon's birthday and the candles on the cake, then came the fire, after which it transitions to the more neutral regular ship lighting but with more shadows than usual, representing the uncertainty of their situation. And then there's the "flashback" timeline which is lit with more oranges, yellows and greens, which obviously contrasts it with the other two timelines. And the transitions are so good. The first few are excellent and really get the viewer on board for how the episode will play out. First there's Mal who's fallen onto the metal grate floor of the cargo bay, and as he's remembering the voice of the ship salesman saying "you buy this ship, treat her proper, she'll be with you for the rest of your life" as the light from the cargo bay doors opening splashes across his face, but it's from the flashback as Mal opens the doors to show Zoe the ship for the first time. And then as they walk through the hatch at the other end of the cargo bay, the light transitions from the warmer yellows and oranges of the flashback, to the shadowy blues of the "now" timeline as the camera shifts back down to Mal laying on the floor. And then it cuts to the shot from below to reveal Mal's blood dripping from the grate as the tense music swells.
Such great direction and cinematography. And it's great that they didn't do the lazy thing of putting up a title saying "6 hours ago" or whatever. They trusted that the viewer would get what's happening, which makes the impact so much greater.
Anyway, I could keep writing about this episode forever, but this comment is already way too long. I'll just say I always enjoy seeing people's reactions to this episode, and yours was no exception. I'm glad you enjoyed this episode, and I definitely enjoyed watching your reaction.

Brilliant story telling on this episode! It's the perfect touch at the end of the episode when we see the ship salesman was trying to sell Mal a different ship but his heart was set on Serenity.
    - You know things are bad when Jayne IS the voice of reason. Yelling and fighting does use up oxygen faster. PS: Oxygen is a gas (Out of Gas).
    - "Catalyzer on the port compression coil blew" - Kaylee has been complaining about this part since the pilot episode.
This is the episode where I like to talk about Mal metaphorically. I like to think every crew member represents an aspect of Mal. Also, in an abstract way - Serenity is the tenth member of the crew (inability to settle under Alliance rule. Desire to wander).
    Aspects of Mal:
Zoe - Military Comradery and command structure
Wash - Wit, seeing the humorous side of things
Inara - Love and the inability to express it (Brought on by the war in Mal's case)
Shepherd Book - Religion (repressed by War PTSD for Mal), the belief & desire to do right
Kaylee - Optimism in life, (Also repressed by War PTSD for Mal), Love and devotion for Serenity
Simon - Loyalty & protection (Simon to River, Mal to his crew)
Jayne - Mercenary, Pessimistic view of the world (For Mal - Brought on from the war), Justifies doing crime.
River - Mental anguish at the hands of the Alliance. Feeling lost. The need to get away from the Alliance. (For Mal - Brought on from the war)
Serenity - The ship is the 10th member of the crew. It represents the freedom Mal is seeking.

Most comments, including my replies, have been about the Kaylee reveal but I think of all the great moments in this episode (in my absolute top two episodes) the second best is "Everybody dies alone" and the top favorite is Mal grabbing Wash when he won't follow orders.
Between his showing the first truly aggressive steps seen in enforcing his command, as with each of the others his tailoring his actions to what that crew members needs to function. in the emergency, the way Wash does pull together from it out of his complete panic, and the shot of everyone taking a. move back - especially a Jayne who looks a bit frightened.... Absolutely a great scene for Mal as a captain and showing us more of his command presence and crew assessments.
Won't give away any spoilers but I will say I think in this episode his different treatments appropriate to each crew member's strengths and weaknesses laid an excellent foundation for events in future episodes regarding his good judgement of his crew and the bonds he's made with them all.
Also, the foresight to attach a gun to equipment before letting the other ship personnel in and as it became clear it was going negative maneuvering his presence slowly towards it... ending with him landing next to it.
