Comrades: Almost a Love Story, Chungking Express, What If?, The Decoy Bride. The Before trilogy can't be underrated because everyone knows it's awesome.
Wow! HELL YESSSSS!!! This is great. I'm so excited to see you react to the first installment of the Before Trilogy, Before Sunrise which happens to be one of my all-time favourite romance movie and an all-time classic of the genre. Thank you, Stella & Hayley.
This series is my favorite "movie" of all time. As Stella says, this movie voices a lot of what I believed, and what i came to believe, about love and connection. I saw Before Sunrise a few years before they made Before Sunset, when i was about 13. The feeling of hope and possibility at the end of the first movie stayed with me for a long time. When i learned about the next one, i decided not to watch it. I didn't want to know the reality of the outcome, because the hope was better. But after a bit of growing of my own, I decided the reality was better than a fantasy, whatever it turned out to be. This is a yearly rewatch for me, and i find that each film takes on deeper meaning as i get older. It is so genius.
I think the ladies' skepticism about Jesse is very interesting. I have a feeling it reflects a generational shift in what women find attractive. I am a guy, so I could be off here, but my recollection is that Ethan Hawke specifically, and his character Jesse's artistic, cynical, brooding, slacker vibe were kind of the height of male attractiveness for Gen X women, whereas these days that broody cynicism is a significant turn off.
Jesse’s hot and he’s not an idiot. But as a straight guy, he has some yellow flags. With the story about his friend and his cynicism, like they said believe in the magic of life a little. Or at least, don’t bring the mood down for others.
Gen-X-er here who saw this movie when it came out (and has been rewatching it - and the whole trilogy - on repeat ever since): I don't remember *exactly* how I felt about Jesse on that first watch (at least mildly put off by some of his weird mannerisms & red flags), but, MAN - in the intervening years, watching him throughout this movie has become more and more cringe-inducing. Like, I nearly turned away from the screen each time his douchey-ness/bro-ness came to the fore...lol. In any case, that is COMPLETELY solved by the second movie. "Before Sunset", FTW! :D
@@FesterSilently Isn't the bro-ness a product of being 23 and male. Not a fully formed man yet. What was Celine's character flaw. Isn't she a betty character. Attractive, intelligent, open, great listener. The Jesse character is a better representation of a real person
This is a generational thing that I don't either lady can understand. It is interesting to see a more modern 2023 perspective on a movie that was about Gen X and their experiences in their 20s.
@@ryanbuysse8867 I think that a broody, cynical and critical attitude was just more socially acceptable and attractive to people in the 90's than it is now and for that reason I think there are less broody and cynical 22 year olds these days (though there are obviously plenty). For example, notice that succesful reactors rarely even mildly criticize the films. I think that had UA-cam beeen around in 1995 the successful reactors would be the ones that ripped into the films and actors. The 90's were the "don't sell out" decade. When was the last time you heard anyone criticized for selling out? I wouldn't say Celine is a Betty (she feels like a real and flawed person to me even if her flaws are well hidden). I do think she is a bit underwritten in this film in comparison to Jesse. I personally chalk that up to Linklater being a man and Delphy not yet having the clout/confidence to push for more character detail for Celine.
There’s nine years between each movie, and the dialog gets noticeably more mature and stronger as the series goes on. The movies go from them talking about their ideals and futures in the first to their kids and responsibilities in the last. What growth for these characters.
One of my favorite movies and series ever. It’s like how I write my own screenplays-just scenes where people have the time and space to converse. In that effort, I even bought the screenplays to study how to make the dialogue more natural and breezy. Such a good film to emulate when you’re after a character study as opposed to a movie with a ton of action and movement.

The before trilogy is truly so beautiful and real, i think that's why i was so scared to watch the next two movies while still being in my twenties. It was definitely worth it, but the third one destroyed me and i haven't recovered. I hope you guys watch it!!

100% you should watch "Before Sunset" and "Before Midnight". You're both right - this film stands on it's own as a great slice of life piece. But each sequel builds on the same vibe, the same relationship and characters, and I think that all three have their own merits. They didn’t get the credit, but Ethan and Julie rewrote much of the dialog with the director when they were shooting. And Ethan said ”What about this…” Julie finally admitted that might do the trick. The subsequent movies in the trilogy were all co-written by the three of them, and they got a screenplay Oscar for the second movie.

I just turned 42 5 days ago. Movie was released when I was 13. I put off watching it for so long just watching other stuff mates who are movie buffs so watching what they wanna see and stuff - and the romantic stuff maybe not my general taste 🙊 decided to watch it 2 or 3 months ago - and I’m so happy I waited til now to watch it instead of being twenties or as a teen would have been a waste. At my age having experienced genuine loss - this movie hit me harder than I could imagine. I stayed up til 5 in the morning watching the sequels. I watched them nightly for about a month and am still watching them. I just think watching at a younger age wouldn’t have had the same impact as watching them now. I’m still not over watching them to be honest
The Hawke character is a perfect representation of the cultural Zeitgeist of the early 90's. This movie, along with movies like 'Singles' really represents the era for me.
Sequel is even better. Would like to see your reaction to it. If you've ever been in love you'll relate even if you're younger. Third one might be harder to relate to but it's still interesting to watch.
You're talking about Jessie touching all the taboo subjects really hard, but it's clear that Celine is vibing on everything he's throwing out there. They're complete opposites with the cynic and the romantic, but they're clearly made for each other. And the guy totally had a complete poem ready just to insert the random word into.
Really awesome movie, took a chance on watching it many years ago and it has always stuck in my mind. Their chemisty is beautiful and the movie itself ended being just like Jesse wanted to do follow people around for 24 hours and just see what happens.
I would love to see you react to the other two. I consider it my favorite trilogy and it has the most natural and compelling dialogue of anything I have watched. I enjoy seeing what other people think of it.
This film had no improvisation in it. Everything was in the script, which considering how well it flows, is quite impressive. It's a fantastic trilogy.
"Before" series is one of my favorite. I was so happy to see it here. Stella got very well what the series is about. The way one feels about each movie depends a lot at where one is in life. When I was in my 20' I liked "Before Sunrise" most, now I like "Before Sunset" more. Perhaps in a few years "Before Midnight" will become my favorite 😂 Great reaction. I hope you'll decide to react to the whole series.
The other two movies are good, but "Before Sunrise" stands head and shoulders above them. It is a beautiful movie. Hits a sweet spot in terms of love stories. There was talk about it being nominated for an Academy Award in 1995, but unfortunately, it didn't happen. Richard Linklater, who directed "Dazed and Confused," directed the film and co-wrote it with his writing partner, Kim Krizan. I have read the screenplay. It was tweaked a lot before committing it to film, apparently with the help of Hawk and Delpy. That is why it sounds so natural.
One of my all time favourite rom coms. Ethan and Julie have fantastic chemistry, and it's wonderful to watch them banter back and forth, having deep connections. I'd love for you to react to the sequels as well.
Thank you, Stella and Hayley! I hope we will be able to continue to watch your reactions after this -- either here or elsewhere? And meanwhile, SO glad you both reacted to this! I HIGHLY recommend BEFORE SUNSET -- it's my favorite of the trilogy. It's smarter, richer, more vulnerable, and filled with deep emotion. It's absolutely lovely, and both Hawke and Delpy co-wrote the screenplay with director Richard Linklater and were nominated for a writing Oscar for it -- and again for BEFORE MIDNIGHT (although keep in mind, that one is sort of harder to watch).
The Before Trilogy is my favorite movie trilogy of all time. And as a writer, I appreciate how well they managed to make all this dialogue sound so natural that, on first watch, pretty much everyone thinks it was improvised. Because writing natural sounding dialogue is hard!
I love your review! This film still has a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. When I saw “Before Sunrise” when it first came out in 1995, it felt special even then. I had no idea it would become so iconic, and I feel ecstatic about that! The same way that a song you first heard on the radio so long ago eventually became iconic…
Before sunset is the best of the series for me... Much less idealistic more real... And then before midnight is the most real... I absolutely love this series..
I loved the reaction!!! The play./interaction between the 2 leads is intoxicating…. We all know that men are emotionally behind women and this movie shows this perfectly.. She knows who she is and loves this adventure and where it goes. He is struggling from the beginning as to who he is rather lone who he will be and it is beautiful….
A note on how they could afford to go to restaurants but not a hotel. Food, especially small cafe food was very reasonably affordable back in the 90s. Not wine, but entree menus were a popular thing. You also got free bread and water with every meal, sometimes even free coffee and tea, especially in European cafes. He probably would have only been able to afford accommodation OR food and in that case, eating well, staying up all night and sleeping on the train back would have been the best option. Doing that with food prices today might not be ideal.
Before Sunset ‘s my favourite in the trilogy but even Before Midnight is great as an examination of the relationship in late middle age. The scriptwriting is above anything else in Hollywood, no doubt
Oh, my GODS. I have been a fan of this trilogy since *jump*. I am SO happy you guys enjoyed this one (despite how unbelievably annoying Jesse was through at least half of it); but not NEARLY as excited as I am to see your reaction to the second movie (the best in the trilogy, IMHO)(plus, Jesse is far less annoying...lol). Looking forward to watching part 2 with you guys! :) Re: your fears about what "dating horrors" the next two movies might entail/detail...I won't spoil anything, but I *will* say that they are ONE-HUNDRED PRECENT worth the watch. They are each both grounded and wonderfully magical, all at once.
Was written and directed by Richard Linklater. The second one, Before Sunset, was largely written by Julie Delpy (actress playing Celine), though 😁 This movie was intended to stand alone. The decision to do a sequel was made later on. The second one is the nost critically acclaimed, though. And I believe it was the first film where the same amount of time passes for the characters as for the audience watching.
It’s hard for Richard Linklater to make a film that doesn’t echo James Joyce. As in Joyce’s ULYSSES, SLACKER wanders through a city (in this case Austin rather than Dublin) over the course of one day and a character actually reads from ULYSSES. BEFORE SUNRISE wanders through VIENNA for one day and ends with a mention of Bloomsday (June 16th), when the action of ULYSSES occurs. Later in the BEFORE series, we’ll see SHAKESPEARE & COMPANY, recalling the publisher of ULYSSES. And so forth.
A classic. I watched them as they were made back in the day. It was directed by Richard Linklater. And, if you like this trilogy and its depiction of the characters over many years (of real time, so also the actors), you should check out Boyhood, which is another film of his, which was shot over a decade, but continuously along the way so that we see all of the characters really aging by a decade over the course of the movie. It's a pretty amazing project. Anyhoo... you should watch the other two in this series as well, it's a pretty amazing set of films, and it really pays off because the actors themselves have grown in the same way that the characters have, and Ethan and Julie were really involved in the writing the next two as well. So they aren't acting like they have a changed, more nuanced, more cynical, etc... view of life, or that they've been beaten well by the reality stick, they really do and have. And of course Linklater also directed Dazed and Confused, which is an amazing movie about being in high school in the late 70s, and is so accurate. It could be my bio-pic. On, and in terms of random associative movie recommendations... Julie is in one of the three three films of a VERY famous French trilogy "Three Colors" (Tres Colours.) It's an incredible series of films made by a legendary Polish/French writer/director. Red is my favorite of the three, which has atmosphere you can cut with a knife.
Ooh, a lovely pick! Just so you know, these movies aren't exactly a trilogy in a sense that they're a planned or a finished thing. Linklater, Hawke, and Delpy have just thus far thought that it'd be nice to follow the lives of these characters every ten years or so. I'd wager that you're gonna love the second one at least as much as this one, but I for one am glad that I'd just reached my 40s when I watched the third one lol. You might also dig Linklater's "Dazed and Confused" from -93; it has a similar slice of life vibe, but in high school and an ensemble cast with some very familiar faces from when they were very young!
22:10 I remember once I was out drinking with friends. Year 2000 I just turned 18. We were at 1 place and walked to another place. 5-6 hours between the 2 places. Drinking vodka and orange juice - $2.70 at 1 place $2.30 at the other. No bullshit. Small glasses like 300ml spent $400. You can do the math on that - it used to be semi affordable and they didn’t give a shot how blind you got. I was fairly blind
your discussion at the end about this not being a good representation of actual adult love, is exactly why you need to watch the next two films. Before Sunset is my favourite, but Before Midnight is the most real.
I grew up with these movies. I watched the first one so many times in middle school that it became part of my personality. Then the more cynical second one came out when I was in college, which fit me perfectly. Then the frankly depressing third one came out when I was in my 30s. 😂 So I'm very attached to these movies.
I adore this trilogy and I’m over the moon that you two are reacting to them! Thank you! PS When the channel ceases to exist, please start your own channel!
I live this movie i first saw it on one of those nights where i couldn't go to sleep a flipping channels i found this movie and fell in love with it and to me the second part is even better in my opinion you should also do a reaction to it i have only seen the third part once i think
I grew up with Before Sunrise. I am still a romantic bachelor afraid to view the two sequels because I am still stuck at the train station. The film is so perfect that I don't want to ruin it.
Wow. You are the first people to react to this movie, at least that I know of. This is such a great move that isn't well known. I hope you also react to Searching For Bobby Fischet which is also a great movie, but lesser known. And although people think it's about chess, it really isn't. Chess is just the setting for what the movie is really about. I'll leave it to you to figure out what it's about. I think this is Ethan Hawke's best film. Another one I would recommend is Sinister and most people will probably recommend Gattaca, but Gattaca has the same problem as Predestination which you think, "why am I watching the rest of this movie?".
What wonderful reactions! What really surprised me was that the trilogy were American films (as a rule, I don't think American cinema does romance particularly well).....Please, watch the other two movies. Really enjoyed the post, with your thoughtful dialogue throughout (hearing women commenting out loud as film progresses was interesting). Thanks.

The Hawke character is a perfect representation of the cultural Zeitgeist of the early 90's. This movie, along with movies like 'Singles' really represents the era for me.
Such a fun, romantic film. Before Sunset is also a very good film. I’d love to see a reaction, since so few people have done these films.
This movie really is very beautifull.
OMG NO WAY 🥹
Really awesome movie, took a chance on watching it many years ago and it has always stuck in my mind.
Perhaps in a few years "Before Midnight" will become my favorite 😂
Great reaction. I hope you'll decide to react to the whole series.
This movie has been on my watchlist for years now! Can’t watch the reaction yet but I’ll return once I’ve watched all three movies✨
"Stellaaaaaarrghh !!""
Ethan Hawk ""Predestination"" 2014 , is an EXCELLENT film !!!!!
my favorite romance movie, i loved your reaction
MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎄🎁⛄
Merry Christmas, Shaine🎄🎅🏼🎁🎊
I've had a moment like this in the film, it was incredible
the director made another film in which these 2 characters appear, Waking Life... they talking about collective thinking
Great trilogy. You should watch them all.
"Everything looks different in the daytime" - Not daytime, different without them.
Great romcom!
Richard Linklater directed this movie and the other ones.
This movie is a cult classic from the 90s. Watched it many times.
them: "I do feel bad about the stealing glasses"
czechs: * quietly reminiscing about all the "souvenir" beer mugs with smile on their face *
You guys have to start your own channel! Really hope you finish the trilogy.
The Before Trilogy is my favorite movie trilogy of all time. And as a writer, I appreciate how well they managed to make all this dialogue sound so natural that, on first watch, pretty much everyone thinks it was improvised. Because writing natural sounding dialogue is hard!
Love this trilogy. Take me back to a younger different time
I love your review!
I'm glad that this exists =) thanks for your work😢
That concept of 24 hour live stream was reveled in this movie years before The Truman Show and Big Brother and even to an extent Twitch.
I'd love to see a reaction of all the trilogy
I Love this movie! ❤
Ladies I really hope you continue on your own you Two are awesome!
They are both beautiful. Hayley is my cup of tea. Its the glasses and lipstick. Definitely works for her.
YES. Please watch before sunset. Before midnight……that’s hard. That depends on your mood. But the next one, DEFINITELY
Re: your fears about what "dating horrors" the next two movies might entail/detail...I won't spoil anything, but I *will* say that they are ONE-HUNDRED PRECENT worth the watch. They are each both grounded and wonderfully magical, all at once.
Was written and directed by Richard Linklater. The second one, Before Sunset, was largely written by Julie Delpy (actress playing Celine), though 😁
This movie was intended to stand alone. The decision to do a sequel was made later on. The second one is the nost critically acclaimed, though. And I believe it was the first film where the same amount of time passes for the characters as for the audience watching.
Can’t wait for u guys to do the next one
love this. i hope you guys watch the other two
It’s hard for Richard Linklater to make a film that doesn’t echo James Joyce.
Really hoping you wrap up the trilogy before you wrap up the channel.
love everything here
I grew up with these movies. I watched the first one so many times in middle school that it became part of my personality. Then the more cynical second one came out when I was in college, which fit me perfectly. Then the frankly depressing third one came out when I was in my 30s. 😂 So I'm very attached to these movies.
Because of this movie, I’m now married to a European woman and living in Europe. 😄
The Before Trilogy is my fave ❤
You two are PERFECT for this movie 😂😅
Along with the Bourne series, one of the greatest trilogies. U need to see all 3.
Two similar types of movies such as this are Diner (1982) and My Dinner With Andre.
The long takes are great
Absolutely, you must react to the other two!
Yes absolutely watch the rest 🥰
Watch life of pi
I❤This Movie Series!
I grew up with Before Sunrise. I am still a romantic bachelor afraid to view the two sequels because I am still stuck at the train station. The film is so perfect that I don't want to ruin it.
Thank you for reacting to this movie. Please react to Before Sunset (2004) and Before Midnight (2013).
I loved all three of the movies. I say you should watch them.
Thanks.
