String of Dolphins care and propagation

  • The string of dolphins, or latin name “Senecio Peregrinus” is an easy to care for string-of-plant. While it is a completely different family from your string of pearls and string of hearts, the care is very much the same. I find this plant to be forgiving, perhaps due to the fact that it is a hybrid (taking the best traits from each parent). As the name suggest, the beads look like dolphins and its a joy to have. In this video I show you the full care tips and propagation (with updates).

    I put the ends straight into soil and within two weeks there’s roots and new growth . I just keep it moist , I do it with all my string plants . Edit: but I’ve done it hydroponically aswell . But for me I prefer doing it straight in the soil , i get better results that way . And my string plants grow like crazy !!

      my dolphins started dying in the top side bc I didn't have enough sun on the top. So, I need to prop. I did water but I'd like to try the soil method too, my question is, how often do you water the soil to do this?

    Thank you so much for the information! And, yes, they do indeed root quite quickly in soil. I work in horticulture for a living atm, and sometimes our dolphins lose bits and pieces. We just plop them in the soil after removing nodes and exposing the vine to the soil. From there a new plant starts. :)

    I have String of Dolphins, too. I have it in front of a SE window, and its trailing about a foot. I've already trimmed and started a new plant just by sticking the stems in soil. It worked, but it looked sad the first month or so. I'm going to try the water prop next, as that looks healthier, and of course it's fun to watch the roots grow. Thanks for sharing your experience!

      With my St. oh. Turts. She needs a sarcastic amount of bright, "direct ish" light. She does not like to be watered often, but appreciates high humidity. She is in a corner that has the artifical lighting setup for my mangaves, fiddles, aloes, euphorbias etc. I have observed a major decrease in the strings fragility by doing the aforementioned items. If you need any specific information, feel free to email me at Brillianceunderstood@protonmail.com. One of my 2020 highlights is this peperomia rehabilitation. I have been thinking of doing an open terrarium with turtles under a Tillandsia tectotum (nicknamed - fuzzy nugz).

    Hi Sean, i just purchase string of dolphin few weeks ago, its basically grow in 🌵 media which is very dry media, i water them once a week just like succulent and they are pretty happy, my question: if we use water propagation method, can we just put it directly from water to very dry media, how we water it once we put it on dry media?

    • @onlyplants

      I would water it very often at first and then slowly back away watering frequency.

  • @monky91

    Hi Sean, what's the typical temperature, humidity and wind condition for this plant to thrive. Been growing this in an 60-80% humidity, 25degC to 30degC environment with about 6-8 DLI of light, but the growth is slow, I am suspecting if there is too much wind or the growth rate is just slow

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  Рік тому

      Well this is a hybrid of a parent plant that came from South Africa. I would say that its subtropical. Cool temperatures and mid to low humidity would be great for this plant. High humidity tends to rot it

    Some of my dolphins are really flattening out a lot. But then others on the same stem will be normal. So strange! Do they need more light if they are flattening out and looking more like a stingray rather than a dolphin? Also, some dolphins in the centers of the stems are drying up and falling off. But then there are perfectly fine ones at the base and on the tops of those particular stems. It makes no sense!!! Any idea what’s wrong?

    • @onlyplants

      Those bare mid section stems might be a good oppportunity to propagate! It might have been pests, improper care or less than ideal conditions. This is not to easiest succulent to keep happy.
