I live in Hervey Bay and I'm so glad somebody else is doing this. I've cleaned both Burrum and Mary river of abandoned crab pots and many occasions. Great work bud 💯
I’ve one Timmy. I sometimes get rid of old pots and you’re 100% right, they are too cheap and many people just leave them behind when the weather turns bad. I hope the back lash isn’t too harsh, but there should be a law that allows derelict pots to be removed by the public.
You did right man. Here in the US where I live, we actually have a day set aside where groups of volunteers go out and do the same thing. We got well over 300 of them last year.
Depends on the state, but in general, yeah - you have to be a registered volunteer in FL though, and it's done during a 'closure' period, so any pot left in the water gets pulled, and the owner gets fined if the pots/traps are in the water. However - if you mess with one and are not registered to do it, and/or are pulling them up outside of the closure - you get charged/fined (even if it's washed up on the beach). You're supposed to report that they are there and abandoned. Yeah, I know. Overworked Fish & Wildlife staff don't have time to go check every report. There's gotta be a better way.
I don't know what the laws are there, but here in Florida after the crab season closes, the Game and Fish Commission will fly over all coastal areas and find and mark all traps still in the water, then they come back on boats and pull them. Being that all traps are required to have a tag attached with the owners license number they will send the owner a nice hefty fine, somewhere around $500 each I believe. if the owner doesn't pay they can't go crabbing next season. By the way, the method commercial crabbers use to pull a "mudded in" trap is to pull all the slack out of the rope and wrap it around a cleat, then wait a few moments and let the motion of the boat moving up and down slightly, work it free, it actually works surprisingly well with a bit of patience. It also saves your back! The bad thing is that they,(the traps) keep catching fish, and crab for many years and they just die in the trap and rebait it. Not to mention if you hit one whilst running across a flat, when the tide is low, at speed, it will bring you to a very abrupt STOP! Ask me how I know, I've been thrown clear out of my skiff before due to this.
Glenn James our crabbing is all year round but our pots are meant to have id tag and a float i think any found without that should be fair game for removal the sad part is we can be fined $1200 per pot for touching a pot that is not your own and this stops people removing old pots
@@tishbrett I must confess, here we also have similar laws. I don't know what kind of fine it would be, but I do know that it is well advertised that if caught pulling someone else's trap that it is a felony offense. So we have very similar issues. Although, the fines incurred by one that leaves a few traps in the water at season's end keeps most crabbers on their toes around here and because of this there isn't too many unclaimed traps in our water, at least not compared to how many are out there in season. It definitely looks like you guys have a problem with unclaimed traps down there. Hope you get it sorted, sooner than later. After rereading your post, if we find a trap here with no tag or float, I don't "think" there are any fines for removing them. That's kind of a sucky rule that don't make a lot of sense. Which we have plenty of also. Good luck! And watch out for those random traps!!
@Glenn James - Great news . We don't have much in the way of crabbers on the PNW Coast , but our dive club has pulled in literally thousands of pounds of float nets . Some tagged and many not tagged . We have a nice data base going and even have death threats = We must be doing a great job . All the best .
@@tishbrett $1200 bloody hell! whats wrong with the system? does anyone know if any fishing clubs do a Crab Pot Roundup (in the name of common sense and the environment). Bradley Dopper the fisheries do a clean up in river and collect 100s of unnamed and ghost pots but are under staffed and doesnt happen often enough and public/fishing clubs cant touch them but only report them
This is awesome man! I know here in most of the US, they have to have a degradable panel that will fall apart if it's left in the water too long. That way the crabs, fish & any other critters can get out when it degrades and it will no longer be able to trap anything. It still doesn't solve the problem of them littering waterways & damaging boats that hit them or stealing fishing gear from you if you get snagged on them.
phenomenal!!! loved it mate, true blue Aussie Spirit, picking up the rubbish, helping out the blokes at the ramp. You're a legend mate. Honestly loved his Vlog!!
Surprised other crabbers don't clean this up, because isn't this practice like shooting yourself in the foot? (Abandoned pots result in less possible catch for anyone else. Not to mention all the other problems it causes.)
Thanks Timmy Queensland Fisheries are you listening: Ghost pots are a big environmental problem. Fishos are ready to help but we need the appropriate legislation.
Here in FL the solution has been to require bio degrable doors on the pots so if they're lost they can't kill more crabs. Also they close the season for a week every other year to legally remove pots. And you can register for the clean up if you want to volunteer to clean up the pots.
Just want to add that bio degradable doors and sizing rings are common practice on the alaskan crab fleet as well. Its good to see someone trying to make their environment better. Good on him, and your laws are insane. Context must always be applied./ Were you harvesting someone elses pots? or removing degraded gear that is far past functional from the water column. Only thing is if there is enough sand covering the basket the cleat will rip off almost any boat. Slow and steady is the only way to pull them out if old set pots. Or they are destroying the pot and not 100% effective.
