@@none3418 Thank you! I do hope so. And yes, it is unfortunate, I literally heard two white tourists the other day on the wall, outside one watchtower walking pass me and saying that the watchtower smells because Chinese like to pee in it, so I had to tell them the fact, that it was due to people illegally camp up there, and most of those who choose to do so are foreigners, which leads to the English sign that the local government had to put there.
Wow 20:00 The unrestored wall was like white snake crawling on the top of the mountain ridge. 20:11 the clouds were opening up just enough to see the Wall! How could the wall be built on such a narrow and sharp ridge! You really climbed up to very high to be able to see such a breathtaking view. Incredibly magnificent views! I wish the scene were slower and longer. This moment made the hike in the miserable rain, the unfortunate scene less view of the wall shrouded in mist the previous day and the scary and uncomfortable camping night all worth it. China is not an easy place to do what you did. Thank you deeply for taking such great effort to bring us to this beautiful moment!
500 years ago, a young soldier woke up in the same watchtower as you. Looking at the mountains in the distance, he thought of his hometown and the people behind him who needed protection. And it's time for you to set off again and explore the unknown world. The human world has never changed much. We are all travelers in a lonely life
I started watching the China series at midnight and couldn't stop until 3am! I have been deeply depressed for maybe a year or so and tired of my life. I would never know you passed by my hometown Shanxi, where you were eating with Mr. Chen by the foot of Taihang Mountain, and you helped him unload the truck. People in my province are known for making businesses on coal, the materials you called for making steel. In the end, you said you wouldn't know if anyone will watch your videos. I'm telling you, your videos are now all over Chinese social media, like TikTok, Bilibili, etc. And beyond the hopeless life I'm living now, I'm grateful to see the humanity in the genuine advanture through your lense. Thank you for sharing your amazing experience in China and clearing the mist and rumours about China. I may as well understood life is more than what I'm enduring now.❤
The China series is absolutely incredible. Anthony Bourdain once said "The one thing I know for sure about China is I will never know China. It's too big, too old, too diverse, too deep. There's simply not enough time" with this in mind, i hope to god you go back and film more. Awesome mate
I have a similar story that’s was likely as scary. I traveled to a location at the bottom of Texas on the rio grande. My plan was to shoot the milky way over a certain mountain with the reflection off the river. 3am was when things lined up so there I was on the River that so many people cross to get into America and a huge blacked out diesel truck with no lights on pulls up 10ft from me. Now I have about $8k worth of camera I’m using that I’ve hiked in. This guy hops out and I can’t see anything but a dark figure as it’s so dark out. He walks up and before I could say a word, he jumps.. like he was startled which scared the shit out of me. Then, he said “holy shit, man! I didn’t see you right there!” And I said “holy shit, man! I thought you were a cartel guy coming to take my stuff and chop me up!” 😂 I still talk to that guy to this day after 7 years. He was out there looking to do the same thing I was lol. I guess my spot wasn’t that original.
15:00 As a Chinese, my eyes are filled by tears when I hear you speak out those sentenses sitting on the walls . I am very happy that someone like you living on another country can fell the same feelings as us. I really believe the civiliaztion in human beings are connected and common. I really hope all the people from different countries can say hello and sit together so share their good things as a true smart creatures.
I am a 65 year old English woman living in New Zealand. I have done a fair bit of travelling in my time but nothing as adventurous as your current travels! I am very grateful to be able to explore via your experiences from the comfort of my own home. Stay safe, don't take too many risks. You have such a wonderfully positive and friendly personality that I hope you always manage to find good people to help you out. I'm really glad I stumbled across your videos and will definitely carry on watching.
60 year old woman here, in Canada. Watching with fascination, China (my new perspective) beautiful people, kind, thoughtful, and generous.Stunning country. Because of people like you, we can all be travellers.
Hey, dear lady, you are welcome to visit our country at any time, especially welcome to our northeast China, the starting point of the northern end of the national border, which borders North Korea, feel the beautiful scenery and culture of the Chinese border.
I have settled in China from Montreal, working remotely for a Canadian company. Life is comfortable, and the public safety is excellent. Even at 2 AM, late-night delivery arrives in just 30 minutes.
As a Chinese who lived in England for more than 20 years I’m in tears watching these China series. Your videos have made me more homesick than ever!! The morning view of the Great Wall is simply magnificent! Thank you thank you thank you for sharing your amazing experience!!!❤
@@M-dv1yj And how is China, one of the world's largest countries, with one of the longest history & such a diverse land, ever be considered as a "wasteland" to you? How many times have you been to China?
Your China series is insane and this one is best yet. If you really wonder if anyone ever watches them, just picture this Australian of Chinese ancestry sitting on his bed at 1230am watching this on his TV knowing that he will never be able to experience what you just did. But I am just as happy to watch your adventures and some of the best adventures on UA-cam I've seen. Thank you, sincerely.
I did the similar thing some twenty years ago when it was not so strictly prohibited. It was a winter and when we decided to go down from the watch tower darkness came way faster than we expected. We had to find our way back through the woods on one foot snow with a temperature 15 below Celsius. Things could go unimaginable had we not found the trail back. Almost every year people lost lives on that part of the wall these years. Besides the wall was really not in the best condition to withstand climbers. Government started to tighten the rules to a total ban. It's not exactly a crime to climb there but really we should all respect the heritage and play safe.
17:48 Ding is my friend and he is an absolutely great photographer who shoots landscapes. It shocked me when I heard his voice. It's a pity that I didn't go out and shoot with him. The scenery that day was very nice. He did a lot of calculations to predict and take photos of the sea of clouds. It was a great fate that you met each other on that day.
@sebastianronnholm3191 True it's insane. When I saw him and heard his voice I thought it was almost impossible. He often talks to me like this in this kind of places so I recognize him in a second. He and I climbed some sections of the Great Wall that were open to the public and took photos of scenery(mainly the starry sky). He told me he shouldn't give his real name because the climb was illegal. Fortunately, almost no one knows him on UA-cam.
After watching this whole series my opinion has changed on China. Thank you for showing the true China and all that you did! This channel is worth a sub
Mass media and our governments all lie and tell us a narrative they want us to believe. This is the only way I get my news or believe things from people like Mike.
@rndrecords9832 Most people in the world are only exposed to global mainstream media, they don't go looking for China travel videos so they don't get to see the real China.
Mike, your China series is insane! The best I have ever come crossed. When I was young in college, we had geology field trips several times around Great Wall areas, it is great memories I still have … really enjoy your videos. Thanks.
Astrophotographers are a different kind of breed. They will travel for miles for perfect dark skies and an interesting foreground. All that for a single picture. I know that because I'm one of them. Once you get out, you feel like the stars are calling you. You don't have a destination in mind, but once you see THE spot, you know that you have arrived. Then you just take it all in and start shooting. All in complete darkness with a red headlamp. Best feeling ever!
Respect, man! You’re a truly hardcore traveler, and I really enjoyed watching your video! I’m a Chinese from Singapore and also travel solo in China, but your style completely amazed me. I have a lot of respect for your attitude towards the kind people who help you along the way! GoGoGo!
Singaporean Chinese here too! But I was born there though, and although I've been to China on many occasions it has always been to visit relatives and other than popular tourist destinations (Great Wall, Forbidden City, etc.) and my hometown I've never really set foot on other places of this massive country and explored the less talked about regions. Even as a Chinese myself it's still really incredible to see & experience the Xinjiang series! It's as if I was there myself
Imagine the hardship generations of chinese worked and died building the Great Wall. Also as a soldier on the watch tower, freezing cold in the night. I have visited both eastern and western end of the Great Wall in Jiayuguan Pass, the end of ancient Chinese empire, connected by this 4000km Great Wall. Amazing and humbling. Thru all these millennia of wars and suffering, chinese have learned Peace, re Confucious teachings. God Bless China.
Imaging a solider standing there watching over his country a couple 100 years ago knowing Mike now camps there makes that solider job complete to me if that makes sense
This video is truly the best about China I've seen on UA-cam! It's unbelievable! I never realized just how amazing China is. While I knew about the Great Wall, this video brilliantly showcases the incredible beauty and culture of the country!
One of the best UA-cam channels out there without a shadow of doubt. Down to earth, don't mind a bit of rule breaking, spontaneous, funny, prepared to take risks, makes all the urban explorer video producers pale in comparison. You're a treasure to watch. Where next?
Finished all of this series in past few hours, there is too many thing I wanna say that even make me speachless, this is A great journy to the east, I really admire what you have done, that's truly "Seek truth from facts". Keep going Mike, and Long Live the Great Solidarity of the World's Peoples.
Hi Mike, I just want to say that I so appreciate your journey through China and “taking me on” with you. I left China for the UK to study when I was 16 and have not been home since. Living here along have made it extra hard to cope with the sentiment of confrontation from both sides of the ocean. Thank you so much for showing a side of China I have not even imagined before, and proving to me that there is a common language of hospitality, curiosity and kindness in both cultures! Wish all the best in your future adventure!! ❤
i left china in 04 and came back 10 years later let me tell you, china is not what it was early 2000s. im sure you can make a good living staying in china. stay with your fam.
I just spent my whole afternoon watching your adventures in China, instead of doing my chores. I have been to China but as a tourist, so nice hotels good supervision etc. to see China trough your travel was something very special. I have subscribed and looking forward to seeing more of your excellent adventures. Hi from Australia ♥️
Videos like this what UA-cam was intended to be. Not influencers talking into a mic talking about garbage. Just an individual with a camera showing amazing places on this planet.
Thank you Mike. I’ve been followed the whole journey of your China series. There’s no better ending than the cloud sea at wild Great Wall in Beijing. It was absolutely stunning and brought nostalgia as I was born in Beijing. 😢😢 Love you, love your video, love your channel. You are more than welcome to visit China and hope you may do so soon! Looking forward to your next journey wherever it will be. ❤❤❤
So are there any Chinese nationals doing this exact same thing ? Again the European continues to disrespect the culture of China , just like his forefathers! Always some white supremacy shit !!!
6:58 it originally write 请游客止步 which means "travllers please stop here" but someone tear off one piece of 止 then become to 上, so now become 请游客上步 which means "the travllers please go this way" lol🤣🤣
If you're still reading the comments I just want to tell you that there's just two words to describe your videos: Eye Opening. I would have considered myself on the side of the political fence where I seriously thought China was an enemy, the government is oppressive to everybody and every day people, the people there must be rude and depressed because of an oppressive way of life. Let me just say.. Seeing China through your lens, away from the tourist destinations where people are paid to be nice and tourist routes are mapped out, seeing real China and how genuinely friendly and helpful people have been is just gobsmacking to me because of what my opinion of China was before. What a beautiful place with vibrant people. The episode on the Xinjiang province was the most interesting one because it is so contrary to the mainstream media, the streets were so vibrant. I just feel lied to by the media about China.. Totally not what I was expecting, well done, great adventures and what a genuine experience. Glad I watched it but I'm sad it's over now.
That's because you've been watching fake news about China published by Western media since you were young! Additionally, searching for 'CHINA VLOG' on YT and TIKTOK is not difficult!
Welcome to China to feel and find out youself, instand of just listening to the mainstream media, who are all bull shit, as they are all slave of money or power.
As a Chinese living in Spain, I can understand the ideas of most Western media, such as violence, lack of democracy, lack of freedom, and full of lies. I do not deny that the Communist Party's totalitarian rule does exist, but on the other hand, China's economy is better than most developing countries, with complete infrastructure and a high safety factor. Moreover, Chinese people are very enthusiastic, kind, and like to help. In fact, advantages and disadvantages coexist. I believe that most countries have this. It is neither as bad as portrayed by Western media nor as good as imagined. We should look at China with an equal eye, right? As a Chinese, I also welcome foreign tourists. Thank you.
My partner and I did sth similiar a few years ago. Took a train and a cab to some farmers village, stayed with a local farmer for two nights, climbed and hiked the unrestored wall for two days. Haven't met anyone else while hiking & climbing and it was one of the highlights of our 14 months trip around Asia. Looking forward to yoir next adventure and hope you'll share it with us Mike. Your way of travelling is exactly how I would do it too! Keep going buddy!
This may be one of the most awesome travel videos ever. For you Mike it was nervewracking. For some of your audience it's culturally interesting. For me your high-res camera work opens a universe of information about the millenia-old stone construction topped by decades-old, much less durable, brick construction. Information about what can affordably be maintained. Curved decorative chiseling in the older stones. Crumbling mortar. Stacks of bricks from aborted restoration. Paths made by other curious hikers. You don't get to see how it is in a foreign land without work and some risk. Thank you.
I WATCH THESE BROTHA, im 19 years old and your actually a true inspiration. The challenges you overcome to the complete this are extraordinary, I would love to explore with you. I want to go and see china for myself now after this. Please keep doing this.
Hope you can visit China one day, dude, I strongly recommend my hometown Chengdu, it’s a beautiful and international city with delicious food, amazing vibe and interesting culture❤

I am living and working in China as a European foreigner in the city. Thank you for reminding me to get out there, live, explore and enjoy what amazing wonders are in my reach. You are a true free spirit and adventurer.
I appreciate how real you are - no frills, no extra spending, just a guy roaming through a country he's never been to. Respect. Thanks for sharing this journey with us, brother.
Mike, since I was a little kid I've been filling up my Google maps with different cities, places, countries; I got too many to be honest with you. But your stories really pushed me to f****** get out there and face the music no matter the hardship. Can't wait to have adventures like you someday. Blessings on the road, brother 🙏🏿
Thank you, Mike, thank you so much. I am Chinese but I never saw theGreat Wall like that never. You give me this opportunity to watch this video and to know how beautiful it is. It's amazing.Thank you so much. Welcome back to China again.
'i don't think anyone even watches these' - i LOVE watching these, you seem so genuine and it's nice to see you reach such a wide audience of millions of people that enjoy watching your travels, they are fascinating and you are inspiring😊
That view! 🤩I live near the start of the Great Wall, and over the years, we've explored the lesser-known sections. These hidden parts often lead to random encounters-local painters, photographers, or a group of elderly locals who had foraged wild mushrooms and were cooking up a "hotpot" picnic 🤣Finding a truly "lonely place" in China is harder than you'd think. The signs warning people away are usually there because the wall is in disrepair, though small groups still come especially during winter to take photos on the snow-covered days. Also a sunrise for some on the Great Wall can be auspicious. I like to cycle through the mountains to the original villages built for the workers of the wall and then from these villages explore the paths up to sections where just locals go. Keep on exploring 👍🏻
Hey Mike, for your own safety, NEVER CLIMB THE GREAT WALL ON RAINY DAYS. NEVER. The wall is usually built on the top of the mountain, and you are the perfect attraction point of lightning when you stand on it. There are tourists dying on the wall almost every year because of lightning strikes. Moreover, the temperature on the mountain can drop very fast at night, and you may lose heat and freeze to death. This is no joking, some Japanese campers died because of the freezing temperature a few years ago.
@@larsmundhenk7423 you say it like Asians are intellectually and physically inferior. You would have fit in nicely with the 1930s and 40s German government with that opinion.
Glad i stumbled upon this China series and account. I spent a lot of time teaching in Tianjin and traveling around when I was 21-23. I watched many friends get a head of me in life and some viewed my decisions as falling behind. It changed me for the better and China will always have my heart. Great series man, it brought me back. Though you might take the cake on these unique experiences lol..
You are braver than I, but I loved being alone too. I was a traveller for 30 years and the best experience I ever had, was standing on land where no human has ever lived, but there is no way of knowing exactly where. It was an aboriginal man from Western Australia, heard I was walking across Australia by the Nullarbor and he told me this..... when you are on that long road, stop, leave the road and walk north on that vast desert as long as you like... and somewhere on that sand no one has ever walked here. It did it every day, on my long walks until the Nullarbor was over and it was a magical experience. But, it took a lot of planning to do it. Your trip is a joy to see, taking on something unique. Bravo
Cloud sea is so stunning, this series is absolutely good. I guess you are in the way to your next adventure although a little sad that you already left China, good luck man.
We warmly welcome you to travel in China, and we recommend using the voice translation features of 通义千问 or ChatGPT. Their translations are highly accurate and can help make your trip more seamless.
I was just in China 2weeks ago. I found your videos before I left and felt comforted by what you showed of your experience with the people you met. I also found the people in China and Tibet friendly and wanting to connect with westerners. It was a great experience.
You did well mate. I lived in Beijing from 1996 to 2003 and visited the wall a few times. The touristy place is Baodaling where the wall is restored. where I went the most is SiMaTai where the wall is unrestored (well back then) and the scariest part is called The Eagles Nest. The floor on both sides of the Watchtower was broken and it was very steep, loose rock and pavers but the view from the watchtower was magnificent. From there you can walk to JinShanLing about 8km. You had to get off the wall in places cause it was so broken and farmers take some of the paving rocks for themselves. One day I was there I was with a Swedish guy and the temp was about 40 degrees Celcius but the architecture of the watchtowers is quite ingenious. Even on a 40 degree day they were cool and a breeze came through the slits even though you couldn't feel a breeze outside the towers. The other place on the wall I have been is at LaoLongTou (Old Dragon Head) which is the start of the wall on the Eastern end. The town is called ShanHaiGuan. Unfortunately it was foggy while I was there so zero views. They were great days out.
@@joejiang1499 You see how steven is talking about the unrestored part? This is what a lot of us from the west like. I have been to both mutianyu and simatai and the latter blows the former out of the water. Its not a tourist trap and there was noone there (at least 15 years ago when I went). Part of it had been restored but part of it had not, and you moved from the restored to the unrestored part. Mutianyu is akin to the "wild" experience for chinese, except it isn't since it has a cable car to get up and huge tourist area below it - although smaller than the other more popular parts of the wall.
@@joejiang1499 According to various sources on google the cable car was first installed in 1986 but renovated. Its possible they decommissioned it and you were lucky enough to visit when it wasn't operating. At any rate it is what westerners would refer to a tourist trap.
It's been amazing watching this China series, just think of how many people have spent a night in that watchtower or overlooking the same mountain view in its 2,000+ year history, only for Mike to set up camp and make it his own. Amazing series, can't wait for what's next!
As someone who has lived in China for a few years, I truly enjoyed this different side of China you were showing to the world. Sad to hear this series is coming to an end.
Incredible series. As an american that hasn't even seen the borders of his country, I am truly blown away by your videos man. Thanks for showing all these countries in a true lighting that the news doesn't show
You have such a gift for story telling. This year i visited the great wall for the first time with my wife, albiet in the tourist sections, and I'd peered beyond the barriers to see the raw wall and hoped I could walk down it as you did. Lets just say those final scenes were bloody perfect. Thanks man, seriously.

You should've asked Ding Haitao for the timelaps. It's a shame your China tour didn't finish with that. It would be a perfect nutshell of the whole journey, the kindness of people(who might had scared you), the landscape, the language barrier, in a timelaps showing times flying by. Hi Mike! You are totally deserved for such amazing landscape with great Chinese history in the picture. As a Chinese I have never seen such great view even.

Do you know some watchtowers smell like shit hole simply because there are tourists camping on the wall illegally almost everyday?

And yes, it is unfortunate, I literally heard two white tourists the other day on the wall, outside one watchtower walking pass me and saying that the watchtower smells because Chinese like to pee in it, so I had to tell them the fact, that it was due to people illegally camp up there, and most of those who choose to do so are foreigners, which leads to the English sign that the local government had to put there.
LOL
But I don’t encourage other people doing this.😂
THANK YOU SO MUCH! Yes I also encourage people to not do the same. But an incredible experience nonetheless. Appreciate you!

Lol seriously? What an insane concidence, that's so cool!

Thank you.
It turns out that most normal people are pretty nice and their government / political views doesn’t change that.
The people are nice, their government sucks.

Thank you.

Too bad you missed the part of Mu'tian'yu(慕田峪), really fun to climb it.

And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Romans 1:18-21, 23 KJV Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 REPENT OR YOU WILL PERISH REPENT AND BELIEVE THE GOSPEL GET RIGHT WITH GOD LORD JESUS CHRIST.
应该是2000年前,因为500年前长城以外已经是中国了
We love watching these man, just discovered you last month.
Faith in UA-camrs restored.
Much love from the diamond drillers up in Northern Canada, you inspire us to adventure more

Mike is levells above with his China episodes then any travel vlogger. Absolute privilege to watch his videos, a you tube masterpiece
The view at the end is absolutely breathtaking, never seen before. Thanks for sharing !
Thanks
You should've asked Ding Haitao for the timelaps. It's a shame your China tour didn't finish with that. It would be a perfect nutshell of the whole journey, the kindness of people(who might had scared you), the landscape, the language barrier, in a timelaps showing times flying by.
But still, a great video with a great ending. Thanks for showing us.
Worried for him tbh. I hope doesn't get into trouble because of the foreigner.
结尾是丁海涛拍的吧,那明显用的遥控飞机,麦克一个旅行博主带那玩意不嫌累。
Don't worry, those warnings are just to warn tourists of danger. As long as there is no danger, no one will trouble them
This is the kind of stuff I have dreams about. Solo, once in a lifetime, forever humbling moments. Check mark on the bucket list. Much respect brother
You really keep raising the bar man. Sleeping on the great wall of china is absolutely mental

I felt a sense of gratitude and satisfaction through your videos towards the end of this episode. I am wondering if this trip has refreshed your memory of China but also your perspectives about life. This land is unquestionable our root for all Chinese people whether we are here or there. And we welcome people like you come visit this country with your open minds. ❤
The final scenery is like China.
The Great Wall represents history, the mountains represent the vast land, and the clouds add a touch of mystery.
Mike, thank you so much for letting me see China in your lens. You are such a good spirit! I love you and your vibes, keep doing what you are doing! *Brohug*
That mountain view was breathtaking. The whole China series was amazing. Thank you for that, Mike.
Thanks!

Thanks mate. I actually filmed this about 2 months ago when only 1 or 2 thousand people were watching each video. So I thought I’d keep it in. Thanks for watching

Come if you have a chance! Us Chinese welcome you at anytime! The western oftenly portray China in a bad way but when you experience yourself you'll find out how sinister the west has made China seem. Welcome to China!
This is exactly the kind of travel content I didn‘t know I needed. Wow. Last minute gave me goosebumps. Your style of storytelling and your energy is truly amazing, not your usual travel vlog but even better. Thank you for sharing and inspiring bro! Greetings from Germany✌🏼
The ending view blew my mind, INSANE. Cant believe this is the end of your China series. We have been so immersed in every bits of your journey all along. Really hope that you find a chance in the future to explore the rest of the country.

I binged watched your China series on a Sat night in Brum.
One of the best insights in to China right now and a glimpse of a culture so different. Must be a rush doing what your doing. The algorithm is liking you bro(.
As a native Chinese of your age, I have never seen such a beautiful scenery. Thank you.
The great mother continent of China
你沒見過嗎,五嶽隨便選一個,雨天登頂,等雨停了,景色都比這壯觀多了
Time to go home and explore it!
五岳满山顶都是人,还有不少人扛着傻逼国旗拍照,根本没法看。再好的景毁呃呃一干二净
@@karaki369五嶽上沒長城😂
Mike, it's been a pleasure following you along for this journey. Waking up on the great wall with that view must have felt UNREAL. Seeing it second hand almost brought me to tears.
Your videos really compete with some of the best travel content out there. Please keep going; there is so much potential here that the world just hasn't yet discovered. Can't wait to look back on your channel in 2Y and see you get the exposure and recognition you deserve. Cheers!
THANK YOU 🥹🥹🥹
Hi Mike! You are totally deserved for such amazing landscape with great Chinese history in the picture. As a Chinese I have never seen such great view even.
Dear Mike, thanks for taking me to the Great Wall of China. The sunrise view was incredible and so were you. Many hugs from Germany!
The view at the end is absolute mind-blowing!
