looking for inspiration on fan flow art for raves and festivals, this video alone just showed me all that is possible with such a simple tool/toy. Functional and very aesthetically pleasing
Really great, I remember I used to use a three sectional staff, and a bo. Fan are extremely elegant. I prefer to see katas with fans than whip chains which can be elegant but too repetitively flashy. With fans you can see what each movement is supposed to do. My last tournament one of the judges was the grandmaster of our style. He scored me so low while the others scored me very high. Lol he was a perfectionist and knew what I was doing, he also was very hard on us to be better.

Such an awe inspiring demonstration shows how much martial arts training has grown world wide in just 50 years or so. Before the exposure of Bruce Lee movies the amount of westerners practicing was extremely small. Nowadays girls that have been trained since they could walk are more skilled than most of the men who are considered pioneers and legends years ago. Absolutely mesmerizing to see it done as well as this! ✌🥋
okay, can someone tell me something. this art seems to be all about using the fans as some sort of distraction. some sort of blocking the enimie’s view and striking when they’re not focused. is this right?
I don’t think wooden and paper fans would be a viable choice of weapon hehehe but there’s this japanese martial art called Tessenjutsu where iron fans are used and can block blows from swords or darts and is pretty bad ass
Yes, distraction. However, using a fan as a jabbing weapon, in a "surgical strike" capacity, is viable when you utilize knowledge of the bodies more sensitive areas. For instance there is a nerve receptor near the liver. If you strike with the appropriate amount of force you can inflict enough pain to stun or incapacitate your opponent.

There were many times where social etiquette did not allow a warrior to carry swords, daggers, and other obvious weapons. The fan, however, was a common device that 'could' become a weapon when needed. While distraction was certainly an element of its use, jabs and redirection of opposing weapons were common, as well as aiding in joint locks... :)

As a Mortal Kombat fan, I'm wondering why they never bring these people on to do the motion capture for a person like Kitana. Her fan movements and motions seem very much motion captured by someone who does not know the art nor the style. The flashing of the fans and the sharp sounds from opening them are to distract the opponent, while constantly moving to find an opening. Once found a closed fan could be jabbed into a person's eyes, neck and sides

People saying that this is useless in a fight sound just as stupid as if they were arguing that figure skating is useless in hockey. Look, this person is doing a fan form in a kata competition, and you are judging them on street fight ability. Maybe try to realize not everyone is training for the same reason and let people do as they please?
This all began with fighters calling out fake masters, and i'm all for it, in the cases these fake master pretend to teach self defense that does not work, but this inquisition should not expand to people who do martial arts for the art part, while they are very aware it is what they do.
