Will I still be able to catch up? A💡: You don’t need any previous katana martial arts experience to participate in our lessons. Seki Sensei, the instructor of the online lessons, will carefully instruct you on how to handle the katana regardless of your level. You will also be able to access all the videos of the past lessons so you can watch what every other student has learned. You can also send us videos of your progress, and Seki Sensei will be happy to give you feedback. Q❓: What is the right length of the Iaito (zinc alloy training katana) I should use? A💡: Please purchase an Iaitō at least two blocks longer than the standard length. The standard length for Seki Sensei is about 177cm, so he should use a 2.45 Shaku long katana. However, he uses a 2.6 Shaku-long katana that is supposed to be used by someone 190cm tall. If the katana is too short, it becomes too easy to draw, which is not good for training. Q❓: Can I join even if I belong to a different Ryuha style? A💡: Yes, it’s not a problem at all. The Seki Sensei himself has trained in more than five styles and various other weapons. If you don’t want others to know that you are participating, you can join the online lessons with your camera off. Besides those amazing techniques demonstrated by Sensei, I really love Tsukada-san. He has been training with Sensei through many different Katas and many time for each Kata, but every time Sensei give a illustration, he is genuinely excited and surprised as a student learns a new lesson. Feel little bit sorry for him by each time he gets hurt during Taka, but when he stands up from the fall, the smile always blooming on his face.
Wow more tessen jitsu please !!! . I have served as a Law Enforcement officer for close to forty years and the techniques that sensei has demonstrated can also be applied using a collapsible baton . More please !!! Thank you .
This was very informative. Dungeon and dragons just released a play test for Bards which included a new Dancing Bard subclass. I am playing one who uses a pair of iron fans for performance and combat, so these video's were really helpful to show how she would use them as a real weapon.
Being that fans are not common items today consider using an item you would carry in daily living or for your studies or profesion. A comb, brush, ruler, screwdriver or anything you can imagine that is about the same size and shape. Even a rolled up newspaper or magazine can be effective.

Wow! The wrist lock technique shown at time index: 5:30 is the same as the Nikyo joint lock taught in Aikido. Very nicely done! We would often use a Jo to do the same wrist lock in Aikido class. From what I see in the video, a wooden Tanto could serve as a substitute. If you didn't have a wooden Tessen (fan) to use in class. 😱😳😊😊
Much appreciation for Seki Sensei’s kind willingness to share these elegant techniques! As part of our jujutsu training, we engage with small hidden weapons such as suntetsu and “found” weapons and tessen, which I became fascinated with when I trained in Kung fu. Tessen jutsu is really a wonderful practice, precisely because tessen increases leverage and is a beautiful thing for improving kyusho jutsu. Since it’s a tool and weapon one would carry - and is still carried in everyday life, it was and is a great “everyday carry” weapon. I loved the metal balls carried within the knot! A couple of my tessen have sharpened staves and function almost as tanto, but the more hidden element was wonderful to learn about. Thank you again to Seki Sensei and to you, of course! 🥋🙏🥋
As a Ju Jitsu practitioner it is great to see some techniques that can be supplemented with the tessen. Also really nice how Seki Sensei shows Atemi against Kyusho (vital) points in this video. Thank you very much!
I keep seeing SO many techniques that are SO similar to the Aiki-Jitsu I learned from my master. I would LOVE to see what Seki Sensei does if anyone could manage to disarm him. Not likely to happen but, I would LOVE to see his techniques for this.
Has the disarm of the katana with the sickle that is shown in the opening been covered in a video yet? I've watched every video but may of just missed it somehow if it has. Really enjoying this content. I wish there was somewhere near me in the UK that taught this style, I would drive 2 hours or more just for the training sessions quite happily.
it is Wonderful to see these Weapons being demonstrated . When I was a Child in the 60's and my Father was stationed at R.A.A.F Butterworth in Penang , both of my Parents trained in Ju Jutsu, my Mother trained with the Tessen, and carried a Fan all the time, her favourite "daytime" fan was made of Wood with engraved brass ornamentation , she still has it and 4 of her " evening " fans
Seki Sensei must be incredibly strong. He appears to barely touch Tsukada-san, and yet the man is in visible pain and even taps out! Seki Sensei has perfect form, and these moves appear like second nature to him. I've watched many videos since I discovered this channel, and they are mesmerizing. Another solid video of the tessen application. Prior to my Karate journey, I was in Hakko Ryu Jujutsu for nearly half a decade, and we did tons of wrist lock from kote gaeshi to shio-nage and I've noticed several wrist locks which brings back memories. It's painful, but very rewarding knowledge to take home.

Interesting! I've practiced Aikidō for years and I recognize similar techniques we studied barehanded or with the tantō. The tessen fascinated me, and I easily see self defense applications as Seki sensei shows, and nobody on the street expects someone to defend himself or herself with a fan
I love seeing a good video(s) about the Tessen. As a Kenjutsu student, I would wear my katana, tanto, and Tessen. It's nice to see more attention on the less known weapons.
I love the fan hiding the face technique. not seen here still very cool. Thanks Shogo, I enjoy this type of content very much. Thank you to Seki Sensei as well.
Many rondell dagger techniques from Medieval fight books (like Fiore or Talhoffer) are very similar. Again this just shows how similar the martial arts if samurai & knights actually were.
I love your videos! You always present wonderfully executed traditional techniques. This time the title made me smile too. With the second glance it was clear that you mean with metal fan a tessen. But first I thought the meaning is that metal fans means fans of heavy metal music. 🤣
Wow Tessen Jitsu is something I ought to look into. I got some basic tessen wooden and plastic fan lying around mainly used to fan me. But seeing it used as a self defense weapon has gotten my motivated to try and use it as that if needed. Combining a Tessen and a Monkey’s Fist would surely be a weapon with lethal force. Granted it comes at a price. A fight is best to be avoided at all cost but when you gotta stand your ground it’s something better than your bare fists. I definitely don’t have the muscle but I want to use my brain and speed to my advantage.
Could probably do most of these with an expandable baton, with or without expanding it. Just remove the padded handle, or make one with a pentagonal, or hexagonal shape to be more rigid than a square shape, while maintaining a pointy edge.
Hi. Thank you *so* much for this video. Iron Fan techniques are fascinating (and underrated). Could you please ask Seki Sensei if there are any segeo techniques he could demonstrate?
You’d think that people would have learnt by now that trying to steal anything from Seki-sensei’s hand (sword, fan, stick, sickle, beer glass, ice cream, etc) is just a bad idea 😂
Hello, congratulations for the the good job in this channel. I have a question, this school have no armed techniques? have a relation with the asayama ryu teach in the Genbukan Association?
How interesting! I encountered these same techniques in Hoko Shin Ko-ryu in my younger years, but taught with a short stick. I never realised they were originally for the fan. Or maybe I just failed to pay enough attention back then 😅
I practice Aikido, and in the current school I am working with we have a bit of tessen too. We normally use a (wooden) tanto though, because sourcing practice tessens has been very difficult for us. Any ideas where I could buy a few? (I am travelling to Tokyo later this year, so even if it was just a shop without any internet presence I could still try to go there in person)
Hello, big fan of the channel! I wonder if the Japanese fans can be opened when fighting and how that may look? I heard was used to deflect arrows, signal troops, cool off, throw knifes, hide attacks, but are there tessen katas with openning it? I've tried searching for it, but mostly found it as an art form dance. Would love a part 3 on this topic if is relevant!
Most of these tecniques are really cool and i could see many being usefull. Two i dont think would be useful and even dangerous to attempt are the one that requires blocking a sword and the overhand fist.. the sword moves too fast and nobody throws overhand fists like that. If someone has a knife like that, its going to move too fast to catch.
Greetings, thank you so much for such an insightful video. Does Tozando sell Tessen fans? Where can one buy them online made in Japan? Prefferably made from Titanium. Thank you so much for your hard work and sharing your knowledge.
This, absolutely, doesn't hold up to testing against uncooperative partners! There are a very few interesting observations, but... they necessitate furthercontext and *really*-- a competent person could create a steel fan fighting style from, essentially, scratch and do as well! Who is this for? Explain to me, please, why am I wrong? Someone with real experience, please, explain why I am wrong!?

I have a question, this school have no armed techniques? have a relation with the asayama ryu teach in the Genbukan Association?
How interesting! I encountered these same techniques in Hoko Shin Ko-ryu in my younger years, but taught with a short stick. I never realised they were originally for the fan. Or maybe I just failed to pay enough attention back then 😅
Metal fans are the strongest! Especially heavy metal fans! 🎉😂😂
Alternative title: "Show appreciation to your uke"
I couldn’t include it in the video, but Seki sensei was apologizing and rubbing Tsukada-san’s hand every time!
So cool. 👏👏👏
This can totally be applied using your everyday selfie stick
Thank you for these videos. Can you show kusarigama techniques?
So its not only Tessen Jutsu, it is also Tassle-jutsu
I practice Aikido, and in the current school I am working with we have a bit of tessen too.
We normally use a (wooden) tanto though, because sourcing practice tessens has been very difficult for us.
Any ideas where I could buy a few? (I am travelling to Tokyo later this year, so even if it was just a shop without any internet presence I could still try to go there in person)
鉄扇術の時の関先生楽しそうです。
Thank you
I'm definitely a metal fan 😉😁
Where would you recommend getting good tessen?
Hello, big fan of the channel! I wonder if the Japanese fans can be opened when fighting and how that may look?
I heard was used to deflect arrows, signal troops, cool off, throw knifes, hide attacks, but are there tessen katas with openning it?
I've tried searching for it, but mostly found it as an art form dance. Would love a part 3 on this topic if is relevant!
😂😂sometimes you feel bad for the test opponent 😂
This is so cool
Most of these tecniques are really cool and i could see many being usefull. Two i dont think would be useful and even dangerous to attempt are the one that requires blocking a sword and the overhand fist.. the sword moves too fast and nobody throws overhand fists like that. If someone has a knife like that, its going to move too fast to catch.
He has an evil smile as he taps out his student 😂
Does samurai have a War club or any blunt weapon
Yes it's called a Kanobo
They would also use the staff too!
So you don't even open the tessen to attack, wow!
Greetings, thank you so much for such an insightful video. Does Tozando sell Tessen fans? Where can one buy them online made in Japan? Prefferably made from Titanium. Thank you so much for your hard work and sharing your knowledge.
Now I know what souvineer to bring home next time I visit Kyoto 🤭
Is there a Set of Forms for the Tessen? If so are their any documents about them.
Is there any maneuvers that use the open or closing of the fan?
Where can i buy a tessen?
We are doing some preparations now!
simple but brutal tachniques
is it possible for tessen to be fought with open? or are there only closed techniques?
I am here to see how douma fight
Astonishing
If you hit their eyes, someone can't see you. Am I correct?
Many of these techniques look like Danbong techniques of korean Hapkido
I kinda feel sorry for Tsukada-san 😅
beli kipasnya dimana gan?
This, absolutely, doesn't hold up to testing against uncooperative partners! There are a very few interesting observations, but... they necessitate furthercontext and *really*-- a competent person could create a steel fan fighting style from, essentially, scratch and do as well! Who is this for? Explain to me, please, why am I wrong?
Someone with real experience, please, explain why I am wrong!?
wonderful video... subscribed
Lol i thought you would teach us how to fight heavy metal fans XD
The problem these days is finding a decent tessen that isn't those oversized chinese metal ones.
👍🙏
