The Swedish have some great electronics and software. A few years back they let the USA know they had been tracking them. It worked out that the swedes worked with the U.S. and even leased them a sub for at least a year so they could improve their systems. The Swedes are cool. I hope they join NATO.

Small conventional submarine is quieter than huge nuclear submarine, it is is very hard to detect a modern electric propulsion conventional submarine, it can only play as a defensive platform. Nuclear submarine on the other hand, can go anywhere on earth with much much more speed and stay under water indefinitely, hence make it an offensive platform. So when a country have the money and technology, they always go for nuclear sub

@@chuckfrench608 Yes it is, conventional submarine have smaller hull hence smaller web surface, smaller propeller and drive by a electric motor which literally make no noise at all. Unlike nuclear submarine, which have far larger wet surface on the hull, larger propeller and drive by a steam turbine and geared transmission, the nuclear reactor need pump for cooling and it's a very complex system. All these factor contribute to the noise level.

What's the best cricket bat in the world? The one that Joe Root is holding. Ie. the difference between the two is such that the main difference will be the training and experience of the crew and captain.
In design, they're focussed in slightly different ways. Astute is designed for attack, it is born to find and destroy enemy submarines, infiltrate the defensive perimeter of carrier groups.. to so what subs do. The Virginia class is also excellent at those things but her focus is slightly shifted to being a littoral warfare machine, more land attack weapons, more room for storing special forces, that kinda thing. Every design is a trade off, a balance of priorities, and these two aim very slightly differently in their focus.
Two world class machines I'm glad are both on our sides. But as ever, it's the blood, guts and brains inside which make the real difference.

Considering the astute class managed to best two US Virginia class submarines during exercises off the east coast of the US-leaving the US sailors “taken aback by its capabilities”-I’d go with the astute. It remained completely undetected, best sonar suite on the planet.

It's certainly a stealthier sub. That hexagonal shape the european subs have does a much better job of deflecting sonar than what the yanks have. But those VLS cells the virginia have give it so many tactical options.

Modern AIP subs can operate underwater for several weeks, and are much quieter than any PWR sub in existence while operatiing on batteries. However they have limited range because they consume LOX to operate their diesel engines which must be fed a supply of liquid oxygen. A PWR sub makes it's own air and water so it's range is only limited by their food supply.

Well the Virginia class will win firstly. So Australia will probably get 3-5 Virginias by 2030. Afterwards they will probably get a variant of SSN (R), the UK replacement for the Astute around 2040 built under license in Austrailia. Of course this is a long way off and things can and probably will change.

Admittedly the UK used to have one of the best submarine fleet in the world....But with increasing competition, I wonder if it can keep up with the rest of the rising powers like Russia, China and India? Very soon Brazil, Mexico and Argentina too? Technologically it is falling behind? Its cost of production is also high as compared to its peers? And with the UK economy declining, it is also undergoing a defense budget constrain? But most important of all, its defense strategy is also on the wrong path. The days where Britannia rules the waves are long gone. It not longer has colonies nor trade routes to protect? So it does not really need a blue water navy. A blue water navy is expensive to build and also maintain. Instead it should focus on building a world class brown water navy? And channel whatever cost savings into research and development? This is what made the PLAN a formidable force today. Unlike the US, its defense budget/GDP is only 2% as compared to the US 4%? In spite of that, I have no qualms it can easily defeat the USN in the first and soon, the second island chain. But alas, the delusional British Ruling Elites cannot accept reality...They are still living in the fantasy world of the mighty Royal British Navy(RBN) that is now planning to sail to the Taiwan Straits to teach the Chinese a lesson...until it is humiliated. I am sure top British defense planners know that it is only a matter of time before the Argentinian make another attempt to take over the Falkland Islands by military force and it is gonna be a tough battle for the RBN? Why? Because Britain has been poking its nose into the affairs of Russia and China for too long. They will now arm Argentina with modern state of the art weapon systems to teach the British a lesson, just like what Britain is now doing in Ukraine?
