I love these guys! The Doorway, also on this album, is probably their most famous and universally loved song. Also check out At the End of the Day, Harms Way, Crack the Big Sky, and their 27 minute long epic The Great Nothing.
Good suggestions here! I would also throw in Thoughts, Gibberish, The Doorway, Go the Way You Go, and the album Snow, which has always struck me as their answer to Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. You really can't go too wrong with any Spock's Beard from before Neal Morse left the band.
Transatlantic! It’s a Supergroup made up of ex Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, ex Spock’s Beard vocalist Neal Morse, Marillion current bassist Pete Trewaras (sp?) and Flower Kings guitarist Roine Stolt. Start with the first song off the first album “All of the Above” and go from there !
check out The Light and Go The Way You Go from the 1st album! also great songs from early 90s: Magellan - Magna Carta, Shadow Gallery - Darktown, Echolyn - All Ways the Same/As the World, King's X - Talk To You, Fates Warning - The Eleventh Hour. more metal stuff: Cynic - Veil Of Maya, Atheist - Mineral (the whole Elements album is great!), Psychotic Waltz 1st album! Savatage has some prog feel - start with Gutter Ballet song, Streets album
Had to subscribe once I saw you reacting to the Beard. Ryo Okumoto is an unsung rock star on keys and Dave Meros is, probably, one of the best bassists out there. The whole band's sound is a sonic buffet; underrated, and they continue to this day with the amazing Ted Leonard (of Enchant, as well) now leading on vocals.
Crack the big sky was the first song I heard with them, must've been over 20 years ago. The drums in the intro just hooked me. Another band worth checking out is The Flower Kings a Swedish band with some very weird songs, but since you're used to the 70's stuff I recommend The truth will set you free. It's very long but never gets boring.
If you enjoyed Spock’s Beard, you would also love Neal Morse solo albums and later with The Neal Morse Band. Morse was the former Spock’s Beard singer (he is the one who sings on this video).
My favorites by them are "The Doorway," "Dreaming in the Age of Answers," "Time has Come," "Thoughts," "At the End of the Day," and the live versions of "The Light" and "The Water" off their _The Beard is Out There_ album. But even their "lesser" albums after Neal left still have gems.
Neal Morse (their lead singer, rhythm guitarist, and backup keyboardist) also managed something impressive: he wrote Christian rock that I know at least two atheists were able to enjoy. _Sola Scriptura_ and _?_ are phenomenal albums with _One_ only a bit behind.
Chiming in to second the recommendation for Transatlantic. Their first album, SMPT:e is excellent, but I think I like the next album, Bridge Across Forever, just that little bit better, with the exception of the title track. It's not a bad song, but it is really a Neal Morse solo piece, and it always felt like it brought down the energy level of the album for me. Your mileage may vary, obviously. The rest of this album is just fantastic, though! Given the old school prog you enjoy, I think you will really dig this one! Also, check out the main band from Transatlantic's guitarist, Roine Stolt, which is The Flower Kings. I recommend starting with the album Stardust We Are, great stuff!
Spock’s Beard song suggestions: At The End Of The Day (a must), Flow, A Better Way To Fly, Harm’s Way, The Light, Hell’s Not Enough, Hiding Out…. And the list could go on and on…
For S.B. recommendations I have to list: The Great Nothing The Healing Color of Sound The Light The Water Pretty much everything from their first six LPs is superb. Jump down the Neil Morse rabbit hole into Transatlantic, NMB, Flying Colours, etc. It's all very good. 😎👍
Nice - first time seeing your channel. I re-discovered prog back about 10 years ago. I love your shout out to first responders and service people. It appears like most of the comments are from folks around my age, or at least liking the same era... I am curious if there are any new young bands adopting prog at all? I am so glad these guys are all still making music and I love it all -- just curious from the community what new people/groups are out there?
From the same album the title song Beware of Darkness has always been a fave. But you could also tryout one of their first epics The Water (content warning, though)
Recommendations for wonderful prog bands that came up in the last 10 years in the prog metal/rock genres. Band : Leprous - The Sky Is Red (Live version ua-cam.com/video/_nN61nW1Ly0/v-deo.html ) or Below Band : Riverside - Second Life Syndrome Band : Haken - The Architect or Cockroach King or this ua-cam.com/video/cfCMB4VV-ec/v-deo.html Band : VOLA - Head Mounted Sideways Band : Rishloo - Just a Ride or Dark Charade
Check out another some amazing modern prog rock bands: Echolyn, Magellan, Apple Pie, Moon Safari, Magic Pie, Spastic Ink, Samurai of Prog, The Tangent, Karmakanic and The Flower Kings.
I left a list on the Porcupine Tree video.....I saw that you did DT , and that someone suggested Riverside. Good band. Dream Theater with half the notes and a more soulful singer. "Escalator Shrine" is one I'll mention again. A modern prog classic. ua-cam.com/video/9QVextqpcnI/v-deo.html Also , if you like this, you'll like Big Big Train. Try "East Coast Racer"..... ua-cam.com/video/saA2bMLvD2g/v-deo.html

Stranger in Your Soul from Transatlantic, if you dare of course, because is one of the most beatiful pieces ever created.

I think of Dave Meros as a sort of cross between Squire and my favorite bassist to listen to Dave Hope of Kansas.
Dave Hope is extremely underrated, as is the entire band IMO. Thanks for stopping by.
Got hooked on Prog (what ever that is) back in '71. Found Neal Morse in '01 and Arjen Lucassen in '21. Can't wait until 2031. Hope I make it. :)
Dave Meros plays a custom bass ,modeled after a Ricky , but with 3 pickups
Thanks! Good to know. Definitely sounds like a Rickenbacker

Hey man love your channel! Check out Vacuum by The Watch. The singer sounds like Peter Gabriel
For the NVD years listen to "Edge of the In-Between" and for Ted Leonard years check out "Somebody's Home"
