Great trip and good food. Much better than freeze dried meals for sure. Looked chilly out but you were prepared. Nice fire to keep you warm too. Awesome tunnel. Fun adventure. Take care and hope you had a wonderful Christmas.

Pickett is an awesome place to backpack. Have been there in a few years. That food looked good!

That hot cocoa looked amazing. Very cool exploring on Day 1. Hidden Passage is neat. Pretty overlook and waterfalls! Hot Hands are gold! Great views and video! You'll have to keep us updated if anyone gets Giardia or something. 😄💚👊

      No one got giardia 😁😁
Hot Hands are gold. They’re always in my backpack in the winter time.

I can’t believe how quickly you recovered from the broken ankle Jason! That’s absolutely amazing.
You guys eat a lot better than I do when backpacking. You definitely need more calories in colder weather to stay warm. I subscribe to your method of backpacking food. Those premade meals are just too expensive. I have had many great meals consisting of nothing more than ramen noodles, home dehydrated potatoes with a sausage sliced up in it. Those prepared microwave meals don’t cost much and are delicious when cooked over a campfire! Love em’!
I feel bad about it, especially living so close to Pickett State Park but I have never hiked the Hidden Passage Trail.. 😳 I have hiked from Parker’s Mountain to Buffalo Arch, down to Rock Creek and the lower section of Rock Creek Loop, on through the Tunnel and exited at the trailhead at the bridge in Pickett. That’s about a 10 miler and just loaded with amazing scenery and wildflowers.
I’m going to have to make a point to hike the Hidden Passage Loop soon.
Keep on getting out there Jason, I know you will. Your recovery is an inspiration to me. I’m still trying to finish my recovery from having a couple of stents inserted in the main artery in my heart back in late spring. I’m getting there but the medications make me feel like crap! .. lol .. but I’ll get there!
Take care, stay healthy and be safe!

Thank you. I had surgery in June and I’ve been getting stronger and stronger every day by the grace of God. I’ll be praying for you on those stents.
When it’s wintertime I try and bring better food. I don’t hike to many miles in the cold so I can carry a heavy pack.
      Have a good evening Papa

Great trip! Cold weather is the time to take real food. Hidden passage was pretty cool. I used to take a bunch of the hot hands but this year I bought rechargeable ones. Makes a nice heat source.

I definitely want to know how the rechargeable holds up. I wish I knew about Hot Hands when I was working outside everyday 😂😂

Great video. I hiked the John Muir Trail through BSF a few years ago. That tunnel is awesome. If I’m not mistaken, it was an old railway tunnel. I’ve tried to find some history on it with no luck.

I had a person tell me the same thing about the tunnel. Train went through it for logging

Dude, looks like that was a very cool camping trip. I noticed two things that need to on my gear wish list. The Garmin inReach and an underquilt for my hammock set-up. 🤙

That was the best looking freeze dried pork chop I have ever seen! Juicy and tender.
Just kidding. That is one of the best things about cold weather outings-fresh food can be brought. Very cool place (pun intended) Thanks for taking us along. 😎
