As Apple Demo explained, the board has no storage, which means no OS. With a patched version of production of iPhone OS on a new NAND, it could technically run any old iPhone app.

I think it would be pretty easy to build out a new memory socket chip instead of soldering to the board, and would enable you to keep the board genuine while still allowing use.
Yeah I thought about that too. The memory board just looks like a breakout board. So I'm sure someone with a bit of PCB making knowledge can easily make a working one.
@@SubZeroNexii I mean, it would basically just be two sockets on a breakout board for the flash memory chip with supporting capacitors and stuff. Presumably the controller and stuff is on there already, but even if not, you could see what they used on a production one. I don’t think it’d be that complicated, I’ve never done PCB design aside from a small back burner thing I’m tinkering with every now and then to learn, but if I had this prototype I’d at least try.
@@poiu477the simpler approach would be to get a protoype Flash Chip reverse engeneer it and create clone Boards...
Keep in mind that the Samsung chip is a RAM chip soldered on top of the CPU, not the CPU itself. As such the text written on it is about the RAM chip.
I actually searched up the chip online, and apparently it is a Samsung 512Mb DDR SDRAM packaged on top of a single core ARM1176JZF 624Mhz Marvell PXA300 processor, which is made with the 90nm process and contains Intel Wireless MMX 2 2D hardware acceleration. Kinda interesting

The P-o-P step is done early enough in the process that the markings on top of the chip are actually about the whole SoC, including the DRAM. Look for the '8900' marking.
This is an S5L8900 SoC, same as the one used on the OG iPhone, co-developed by Samsung and Apple. Mostly Samsung, I think that early on in the process only the CHIPID peripheral was at all touched by Apple. Pretty much every other peripheral is exactly what's found in some of the leaked Samsung datasheets/docs/code.
It is indeed an ARM1176 core. But it has nothing to do with Marvel. The 3D accelerator inside is some kind of PowerVR IP core. There's also IIRC a 2D blit accelerator IP core.
Interestingly there's also a little-known CalmRISC Audio DSP core in this SoC that was actually used by Apple not for audio processing, but for offloading NAND sequencing operations. Future chips replace that with a custom VLIW processor. But this chip was so early and so experimental that they had to make do with what they had.

Actually we cannot see the CPU at all. All we see is a LPDDR1 RAM chip, soldered ontop of the CPU. And yes, before Apple silicon was a thing, Samsung supplied the chips.

I wonder if it has the same protections as a production iPhone does. If it doesn't, you could probably write your own bootloader into your own flash chip, then play with the iPhone SoC however you want.
And I was thinking that Nintendo DS and PSP have bulky dev kits .

Soldering that would be trivial, for me at least. I have taught at least a dozen people how to solder quickly and correctly.

I'm sure at least the top-right one is, as it reads "UART", a serial hardware standard.
serial for debuging, you can still see those around as serial connections are still in use, as its most basic communication bus and micro controlers (artdino) and single board computers (rassberry pi) keeped it alive

Dev software does not include og UI sometimes, maybe it wouldn’t work either with the Emmc module

Dock do have usb pins, so seeinh usb port would not be suppricing, its kind of supprising they put usb serial controller on board.insted of exposing serial pins, that said its before rasdpery pi times for this to be popullar
Adding a USB to serial controller makes it easier to connect to the computer. If the board just exposed serial pins, engineers would still need USB to serial adapter anyway.
At the time that product was in development, you might find serial ports on Intel/AMD PC, but you wouldn't find it on Macs.

4:00 This is not important because this CPU was not a new device and was in production before either device was announced. Generally for estimating a production date you want to look for the newest part and add a few months.
I have a radio with parts dated in the mid 40s but the radio wasn't constructed until 1962. It so happened that they used a rectifier tube that had been in production for 20+ years.

Yep, Apple probably bought a whole bunch of these chips during development of the iPhone (in this case, late in dev when the iPhone was about to head off to production), and then had those chips sitting on the shelf when they started working on the iPod Touch.
Alternative: We know the prototype iPads were invented first, long before the iPod, so by this stage it's likely the iPhone 1, iPod Touch, & iPad 1 were all in simultaneous parallel development, with iPhone making it to market first because of the plan to make it more affordable via carrier subsidies.
How on Earth did you acquire Apple's prototype boards? Who sells such items and for how much? How can I buy one?
The connector for the drive on socket 0 looks like a lot to an Ipod 1.8" drive connector, maybe you can check if its the same and maybe try out one, and if you´re lucky enough you may put the software on it.

I miss the original iPod touch with the original jailbreak because you didn't have to pay for stuff. The jailbreak was to get apps in the first place!

It's entirely possible you might be able to get an old production 1st gen iPod Touch for cheap (maybe a few), desolder their storage chips, and wire them up to a custom PCB that slots in on those spare pins. Getting the pinout to line up may be some work, but with the help of anybody who has a real dev daughterboard, might not be too bad. That way you don't need to modify the original Apple devboard.
And then the answer to “Does it play Angry Birds?” would be “yep, already installed”.
I'm glad they trimmed off that red bezel. It would be very inconvenient to carry around otherwise
Wait, something doesn't add up. The Samsung k4x1g153pc-xgc3 is a LPDDR1 RAM chip - Not a CPU. This is a POP device - The RAM is soldered on top of the CPU.

can't someone try to recreate one of those external flash boards by figuring out which pins do what and such? so you can at least do something with it that doesn't require soldering it onto the board

design a card on cad and have pcb way print you out a pcb, solder the flash module onto it and pop that bad boy oon there
we usually refer to pcb software as EDA, not CAD

Liked and subbed! If you want I have an first gen iPod with jailbreak that I could send. Maybe a breakout board with the storage from that one could give this beautiful board life once more. I understand that you don’t want to mess up history that way. But it sort of is already missing a part. By not trying to make it function we are missing a lot more of it
