So many airshows growing up and the P-40s, F-8F's, P-39's ,and P-51's were always such a treat to see! Idling around the pattern--what history and beauty. Then hen I went to Reno and the sound was so different! Crazy-angry, raspy-wailing...I about cried because they were being pushed so hard, What a completely different sound!!
64 is P-51D Plum Crazy. Making its return to Reno. It competed in Reno between 1964 and 1972 and yes it was among the original Reno racers in 1964. It also won the the championship in 1970. I believe Vicky Benzig is flying her now
"THE DOC" SHOULD HAVE LET SOMEONE ELSE FLY IN THIS THE LAST RACE. I WON''T LIST ANY NAMES BUT HE CERTAINLY COULD HAVE PUT HER IN GOOD HANDS... QUITE SIMPLY "THE DOC" CAN'T BEAT STEVO - PERIOD..! BUT THEIR'S A HANDFUL A' GUYS THAT COULD HAVE MADE THIS THE LAST RACE INTERESTING - SHAME ABOUT "THE BUICK"..!
As much as I love how he has taken care of that bird in the past decades, I have to agree. He seems a bit scared to fly low enough to keep from getting DQ'd. No shame in hiring a hot shoe to fly your bird.
Thank you for sharing! These engines sound wonderful!
That Yak sounds mean. Almost the best radial I have heard.
I haven't seen the Purple #64 since it was based at Van Nuys, California in the 80s
