Beads are a traditional African accessory that consist of small glass beads on a string or wire worn around the waist, hips, neck, ankle and even as earrings. Out all the accessories, waist beads are the most common. They come in different colors and shapes and may also include decorative stones, crystals, or charms. There are traditional beads made in Ghana and there are imported ones from all over other African countries.
Waist beads have been worn for centuries by women in many West African cultures. In more recent years they’ve gained popularity among women in the West. They’re also referred to as belly beads, waistline beads, or beaded waist chains.
In Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and other West African countries, waist beads are a symbol of femininity, fertility, sensuality, and spiritual well-being. Today, in both Africa and the United States, women use waist beads for aesthetic and practical purposes.

My name is Jasmine and I have relocated from Sydney Australia to Ghana in west Africa as of the year 2020.
My parents are of Ghanaian descent and so am I although I was born in Australia. Here on my channel, my goal is to give you a real glimpse into what its like to live in Ghana, from the Ghanaian food, to the Ghanaian culture, to the Ghanaian lifestyle and everything in between. My goal is to satisfy your curiosity about Ghana and help inspire to explore Ghana.
My prayer is that these videos do just that for several African’s in the diaspora.
Follow your bliss because life is short, follow your bliss because human life has no intrinsic value, follow your bliss because everything happens for the greater good and follow your bliss because it has all happened before.

Nice one - Koforidua Flowers! The colors have deep spiritual symbolism. It's way more complex than her explanation or mine. Different ethnic groups have different fashions. I've seen pictures of Krobo women wearing many beads on their waists for public display during festivals and important life occasions. For Akan women (who from ancient times have very dark skin complexions), we hide our waist beads under layers of brightly covered fabric, thick kente that was made of cotton and silk, each pattern telling a story or proverb, afro hair cornrolled covered with duku (headscarf in our simple triangle style). We also used to wear beads and gold jewelry in three sets below knees, above elbows and wrists like the adowa dancers who tell stories with their dance movements. The Queen Mother would wear thick gold rings in the shapes of different symbols like stars.

Definitely much more complex. So many different types one video will not do it justice 🥰

The Krobos have such preserved culture. I am curious to see how developments and advancements are impacting their culture today. My understanding is they were the last ethnic group to migrate to Ghana and also were severely impacted by slave trade and that is part of why they have held on so much to their history. Interesting…..

Do Ghana has a museum for these? It would be good to have them displayed in glass cases and each having a written display about their significance. Their origin, cultural stance, why they are used by folkore and traditional people etc. Also why certain materials are used for example wood, glass, plastic, shells etc
If the government is not innovative then private sector should step in.

My family is from the Volta region. Growing up, my grandmother was the supplier of our beads. Anytime she saw me without them, she’d say something like, “where are your beads? You are not a girl unless you are wearing beads” 😂. I wasn’t always a fan but I make an effort to wear them now cos hubby loves them.

Sooo, the ‘waist’ beads, are they to really be worn on hips, bc we here in Trini wear them on our waist for the most part. They may be stacked, but that’s how I see & wear mine 🥴. That’s so interesting that how u but the black & white beads on babies bc we have something similar where we use Jet Beads w|gold to make the same & the bead is to keep away ‘Maljo’ (Mal-Jo) evil/harm etc. I wear a necklace still to this day bc I like how it looks too against my complexion.
