These comics were also available in certain areas around military bases.
My grandparents lived in Dover, NJ, just down the road from Picatinny Arsenal. And comics with the Mark Jeweler inserts could be picked up at stores and shops in Dover and Rockaway, NJ, as well as some of the other towns.
Correct. I grew up in Fayetteville, NC, right outside of Fort Bragg, and nearly every DC comic on the stands had a Mark Jewelers insert from around 1972-1982. After 1982, it was really only Marvel and Archie that would have the insert, and not as often as DC did in the past.
Was the store a exchange or a commissionary?
@@Trapper_812 No. The store I frequented most was just a little corner store in the town of Dover, just down the road from Picatinny Arsenal.
Your channel rocks Dave..you may want to do an update for this video as the Ebay sold will show a huge difference between regular and mark jewelers comics..Mid grade there is a big difference.Happy new year and Thanks for the great content .
Ya I can do a video like that. I’ll put it on my list of videos to make
@@ComicBookInvestments Looking forward to it.Thank you very much.
You are correct. I just saw that a Secret Wars #8 Mark Jewelers, 9.8 grade sold for $21,000 on eBay a few weeks ago.
I was a kid overseas buying comics in the late 80s. The exchanges on base overseas sold comics, but not every comic came with a Mark Jeweler. They were all in newsstand. But stateside not all exchanges carried comics.
I once bought a collection from a military person that had tons of books with MJ inserts. I did not know anything about them at the time (I figured all copies of those books had them) so I sold them without any premium. I wish I had them back right now since markets like this are really heating up.
Seems like these have went nuclear since this video. Specifically in 9.8. Wouldn’t mind an updated video if you’re willing. Like Hulk 340 went from 2k (2020) to 15k (2023). Seems like 9.8 might be the ones that are true unicorns. For Hulk 340 the best I can tell there are 2 9.8’s with the insert. When it’s that rare it’s what is someone willing to pay.
"Military people like to get married", haha! You said it. My store was about 45 minutes from on of the larger military bases in the south and unlike my regular subscribers who came on their own for the most part, those guys always dragged their wives into the shop. Some of the women at least tried to share their hubby's enthusiasm for comics and all the rest, but most just had a bored expression on their face and looked like they were just barely tolerating the whole experience!
What year did you have your store? Thats cool you had a store. I remember going into my home town comic store back in the early 90s, then the comic boom happened and they were able to upgrade to a bigger place. It stuck around until about the early 2000's
@@ComicBookInvestments I bought out the LCS in 1993, just as the "Death of Superman" boom was collapsing all around us! We survived, and I upgraded to a new shop in 1994, and eventually sold the new-comic half of the shop to my manager in 2009. He is still going strong 12 years later and I'm just dealing with back issues and old toys now. Somewhat like in your case, my dad was huge into comics, owned Superman #1, Whiz Comics #1, etc. when he was a kid. He got me into it strong when I was 7 and I got my first comic shop job at age 12. I also had a short stint working for Sparkle City Comics as an artist and behind-the-table young punk in the late 70s... But I digress! 😂
Whoa. Crazy origin story. That’s awesome though. I didn’t even know sparkle city was around in the 70s. That’s cool that your shop is still going. It seems so hard in today’s market.
@@ComicBookInvestments Thanks Dave. There have definitely been some booms and dips over the years, but it's been more than just a labor of love. We always paid the most of any one in town for collections and treated people like we would want to treated. Long-term loyal customers and employees that are more like family than friends, and an unabated love for the hobby has kept us prosperous for many decades..
@@ComicBookInvestments yea and i feel like almost any store owner has to also be dealing online these days to really make it
MJ variants are always cool to find! You can also look for a star stamp on the cover, it's not 100% of the time the insert is there, but it's something else to look out for when looking for MJs.
ya i've seen those before, didnt know thats what it was indicating
All of mine have that star stamp. It's a good thing or I wouldn't have noticed they were different when I was pricing longboxes of back issues in the store!
@@ComicBookInvestmentslike I said, it's not 100% of the starred covers have the MJs, but most of mine that have MJs have had the stars, so it can be an indicator.
In 1982 I bought the comic book stock of a recently closed store (32,000 ,+) near an air force base....there were a lot of these with the jeweler inserts. I worked to get rid of most of them because they bulked to book up :-)
Hahaha ya they do add extra layer of thickness. They don’t add too much value though.
if u want sell any hit me up on IG mr Miller
@@ComicBookInvestments It seems like they do add value now. I think things have changed in the past couple years since your video.
I have a couple of questions.
If mark jeweler inserts were only put in newstand copies right? Now did they take the newstand run for that comic and take a percentage of books to put the mark jewelers insert in or did they make a complete different newstand run for the mark jewelers insert? If so, where does one look to see how many newstand copies were printed and how many mark jewelers were printed? Thank you for taking your time with my questions.
great video i have a load of old comics and i have not looked to see if i have any mark jewelers i guess ill have to look thanks for the info
Ya. I problem. Let me know if some turn out to be Mark jewelers
Cool, I have a x men 108 with a MJ insert that I got signed by John Byrne and Chris Claremont
That’s cool :) 108 is the first byrne right?
@@ComicBookInvestments yes sir, but John didn’t let cgc witness so I had to go with cbcs
I think I have one mark jewelers insert (need to check lol), great info as always.
Ya it can add some value. Depending on the year. It’s attached at the centerfold
I always find it funny when people advertised Jeweler books as newsstands. There weren’t direct market stores that were near or on military bases at that time.
Does Mark Jewelers only appear in Newsstand copies? My brother just bought a direct copy of a blade book that has the insert.
I've been collecting mj inserts and recently got a few cgc 9.8s back from cgc it's difficult to find the value of them.
eye have a hundred an filthy of mark jewelers im hunting for the Dimond jewelers only the ones from 1971 to 1973 eye have 2 from 1972 great video on mark jewelers 💣
Thank you. They can give a slight bump in value depending on the year from my research
I never knew why my Peter Parker the spectacular Spider-Man 110 was different.. but still says issue #113 on other copies?
To me they're not that big of an deal. But...imagine having a run in comics such as a series like Savage She Hulk or Nova that had theMark Jeweler insert.
Ya I never cared that much about them either. They are just a nice little snippet of history and kinda interesting. I’d never go out of my way to collect them though
You kinda reminded me of someone and it was killing me because I couldn't figure it out, then it hit me! You are a mirror image of Jemaine Clement.
Lol I had to google that guy. Hahha I’ll take it. He’s funny
@@ComicBookInvestments No yeah it's a good thing man. He's a cool dude.
I’ve gotten jim Carey and Adam Brody before. I think even Matt Damon as well.
@@ComicBookInvestments Yeah I could definitely see some of those.
I found one just the other day while listing a Firestorm comic
Ya it’s always fun to randomly catch one in the wild
If people viewing this for the first time find Mark Jewellers inserts cool, check out National Diamond inserts. Similar concept but only appeared for a year or so and were before these in the early 70s.
Ya I mentioned those as well. Basically the prequel to the mark jewelers. There is actually one before the diamond insert. Mennen inserts. They were usually after the cover though not the centerfold
@@ComicBookInvestments yup yup! Ah the fun niche areas of the hobby are the best!
In my opinion, I think it’s just that new mutants is like the hottest book right now and cheaper than a hulk 181 or spidey 129 so anyone looking at them would try to find what is more rare and spend more on it compared to its non mj copy. But yeah just not enough data right?! I mean I feel like that should speak to their rarity and yeah only grails or keys would have the most appreciation in value any random book nobody would really care as much. Anyhow Thanks for making this vid!
I think it’s around 5% of books had the insert. So pretty rare. But rare does not mean more valuable. There just isn’t much demand for a MJ insert. So people won’t really pay much more for it
@@ComicBookInvestments true, rare doesn’t mean more valuable speaking of new mutants 98! Tons of those and the price keeps going up regardless.
I just Found one today. It had purple pages
I just picked up four 1972/3 hulk comics (three keys according to key collector) cheap. Low grade but with the inserts intact. Wondering if it's worth it to clean, press and slab the cheaper books... after watching this probably not.
It really depends on the value. Or if u want them to look nicer.
The Jeweler books, or the national diamond insert books, really only make a difference if they are on key books regardless. Even then, the Jeweler books are more of a niche market.
It’s just a slight bump in price. And you kinda gotta wait for the right person to get it
True, for me personally if it was a random ish I might pay $5-10 more tops just to have a cool older book with the insert (like 70s era not 80s or newer). Even on a key issue you gotta find the right guy
Do love jeweler books, however it is a niche market. I wouldn’t pay much of a premium for the books, because of that. I always enjoyed them, but I don’t think there are many people out there that think that they add much worth to a book
Ya I’m my video it shows it only averages around a 5% increase. So not much of a bump. They are more just kinda interesting
i believe the more recent ones are more commanding of a premium because kinda like regular newsstand comics, they seem to wane in numbers as the years went on. Also, although we know how much condition matters in the value of a comic, the condition factor is HUGE on these. Its very hard to find these in great shape. When you get into the NM ranges of grades for these, they most def command a premium, even on non keys. Plus, no sales numbers a person could possibly find on these hold almost any weight whatsoever because there is simply not enough of a sample size of recorded sales on these. Ppl are still really sleeping on these but they are rare af. Way more rare than just regular newsstand comics. Id say about 88-92 or whenever they stopped doing them is the sweet spot for them
Investment tips and history all in one! :)
That’s what I try to do :)
