    Whitman variants were utterly despised when I was a kid, as "fake" comics. If they become coveted items, that will be a heck of a turnabout. Love it.

      Even Overstreet thought they were reprints in the late 70s/early 80s. I got rid of so many of them throughout the 80s☹️

      I have been solely focused on Newsstands since 2008. Only 9.8 White Pages. I have Canadians and MJ inserts. I have no desire for these bastard comics. Im not saying theyre not a good choice, but the demand will not be as high as the rarer NS variants (CDN and MJ) in my opinion. Too many people who are high level collectors think that these are the fake comics, as you said. The premium their rarity deserves will not be realized.

    Canadian Price Variants (CPV) of keys in high grade are also very popular. As you say, it’s about scarcity. If a high grade key is already rare then a CPV version which was less than 10% of total run is a rare copy of an already rare book.

    As you said these Whitman variants were bagged and sold to retailers by Western Publishing, which owned Whitman. At the time their own comic imprint, Gold Key, was still active. The Gold Keys would be in spinner racks sold individually, while the Whitman variants, which were also in spinner racks, where in poly bags of 3 to 4 comics each. Whitman variants of Gold Key comics had identical cover art. The only difference was that Whitmans would have the issue number on the cover, where the Gold Keys didn't. I remember that at the time Whitmans were looked down on because they were thought to be reprints, even though they weren't. I have a lot of both.
    This selling of poly grab bags was so successful that Charlton decided to get on the act. However with them they put Charltons in poly grab bags (and sold their comics individually). They had a second imprint called Modern Comics, but these were reprints. They were available solely thu retailers who ordered in bulk (100,000 or so at a time). These retailers included Wal-Mart and J.C. Penny. I have quite a few Moderns too.
    I hated those spinner racks. They tended to damage the comics. I would spend ages going thru these spinner racks to find a decent copy.

    Thanks Regie. I also feel like the UK books should be getting their just due soon. These were printed in the same factory on the same day, etc... These books are much more rare in my opinion. More rare than newsstand. I am beginning my collection in preparation for the increase!
    British editions of American comics were printed at the same time, on the same paper using the same machinery. The proportion of British copies was generally somewhere up to 5% of the print run but was probably much lower in the early days of Marvel and DC UK distribution, nearer 2-3%.

    It will be interesting to see if these take off like the 30 and 35 cent variants that marvel distributed back in the 70’s. I know of a handful of collectors that recognize them, but still a lot of collectors just don’t recognize them. Have some of these in my collection and need to see just how many are floating around. Awesome video as always, Regie! Whitmans are getting some love as they should! These were not treated well and would be insane in high grade from a rarity standpoint.
    Curious what your thoughts are on the Type 1A Canadian Newsstand comics that have even less print runs than Whitmans?

    • @lorneknapp6712

      Also, in this timeframe of late 70s, there would be more newsstand edition of comics rather than direct and the main way to distribute was via newsstands. They're tough to find in high grade because of rough handling in selling and also ownership of the comic. Such a cool era to study variations of comics!

    Really interesting. I am curious if the Whitman variant applies also to Star Wars comics? Many price guide services list them as second prints with lower FMV. If they are scarcer first prints, there is a tremendous opportunity for collectors who know this before pricing catches up. Any insight? If I can get some additional information, , there may be a fun follow up blog post here... 🤔😁

    I've heard of WHITMAN variants for many years especially those early MARVEL STAR WARS issues back in the late 1970's. After looking at your other video and further investigation the diamond with barcode with the line through it ended in 1979. This is also rarer than the newsstand for example for uncanny x-men 130 was the last x-men direct to have a line through the barcode with diamond price, then it changed to the Spidey face for 131.

    15 or so years ago the otherwise-knowledgeable CGC forum veterans would argue adamantly that Whitman variants were reprints and warranted consideration only as reprints, disregarding even the minor interest displayed by some collectors. DCs and Gold Keys both explicitly state Whitman on the cover and were well regarded but Marvels were all ignored, with certain issues indicated with price premiums in Overstreet. The whole Whitman thing began around the same time Marvel's Star Wars series was released, with all their reprint editions, so I'm sure that led to a lot of folks assuming any book with the same characteristics was a reprint. There's a fairly lengthy informative article here that goes into detail with Marvel's Whitman editions, listing all known issues:

    Collecting those variants are subjective. For those people who collect them and wants to pay the ridiculous price, then more power to them. I for one collect first issues, first appearances, and Errors. Like misprints, factory folded covers, multiple covers, and upside down comics. I even have a teenage turtles with wrong covers. I stay away from those DC logos, variant pricing i.e. Canadian price, Whitman, and Mark Jewelers inserts. As I was saying "to each his own". But I have few of the Whitman's from a set inside a bag bought from K-Mart back in the day

    *OKAY* - so we did a deep dive on this. The rare books happen for about 6 months in 1977. Those Diamond pricings, including the blank UPCs don’t denote Whitman variance.
    Between the months of Captain America 207 and 213 (which include books like Invincible Iron Man 100 and Eternals 12, etc), there was the “test roll out phase” where you have the Diamond pricing and the newsstand barcode (not crossed out).
    I can’t confirm the 5% ratio, but the Whitman variance is not distinguished, nor is it a different printing from the direct market edition of that time.
    The #1 key in my opinion on this particular kind of spec right now would probably be Uncanny X-men 122. It’s already a key with the intro of Mastermind, but it also is the only direct market book of that era (that I’ve seen) that has a square pricing and the UPC slashed. The following issue they move to the Diamond price tag.
    So yeah - 1977 for about 6 months. If you can find high grades (especially keys) of Diamond pricing with barcode, those’ll probably be the rarest of those print runs

    Interesting subject, Regie - thanks! I never knew these "alternate" styled comics were Whitmans! I just looked at photos of my first CGC submission (they're still at CGC, eventually getting graded - oof!), and my Daredevil # 158 looks to be a Whitman variant. My Wolverine #1 Ltd. Series appears to be the Marvel diamond style, not the Whitman. But just to be clear, my Star Wars #1, #2, & #3 Whitmans are not variants, but "Reprints," as the word appears next to Luke in the header, correct? I think they should be more valuable, as they were printed around the same time, more like a second printing, but oh, well! Thanks!

    WHAAA.....MOST OF MY OLDER BOOKS IN MY COLLECTION HAVE THE PRICE IN THE DIAMOND....I wasn't told why,but that they were less valuable....even some of the major(or popular) "price guides" have them listed as a variant and less valuable.....
    And just with NEWSSTAND in general, again, a majority of my collection are NEWSSTAND to the point where these price guides don't have them accounted for or don't have pictures of them. I contributed it to growing up in a small town in Va.I've even tried to contact a certain price guide and tell them...all these "picture not available " newsstand variants ....all mine are newsstand and ask if they wanted pictures.

    Canadian, Mark Jewelers and Whitmans are good choices. Whitman's are less so because they polybagged stepchildren of the real comics. If you want rare, focus on Canadian and MJ. They were actually on shelves and the nostalgia + rare factor will always trump the just rare factor.
    Reggie- Are the Newsstands still hot?

    • @RegieCollects
      @RegieCollects  3 роки тому

      Many Whitman’s were literally printed at the same time as regular comics and in much smaller quantities than direct or newsstand comics. Like newsstands Whitman comics were also in the public domain which is why high grade newsstands are treasured.
      I would add that Canadian variants are hard to find in the US but are just comics in Canada so are they really rare?

    • @Michigan_Wolverine
      @Michigan_Wolverine 3 роки тому

      @@RegieCollects I agree with your assessment of Whitmans from a rarity standpoint. It is that the Whitmans are hated by so many who collected at that time. Nostalgia drives demand partially and Whitman's don't fulfill that part of a by gone era in people's lives.
      Check out the Canadian issues. If Whitmans were 5% of a Comic's print run, then Canadians were 2% I believe.

    • @RegieCollects
      @RegieCollects  3 роки тому

      I struggle with the absolute nature of your comments. I don’t think either one of us can speak for all people. Right now there are people out there that collect bagged Whitman comics and are very much apart of some people’s childhoods. To this end nostalgia is very much in play.
      I would add that the point of this video is to cast light on a rare and often overlooked and misunderstood collectible. Overlooked because people incorrectly believe that Whitman’s are reprints. The fact is that some are...but others are just as rare as newsstands (in some years). My overall strategy is to put people ahead of the curve and to help them to identify opportunities that may be hidden on plain sight.

      I think you do right by your viewers and make a lot of sense. The premise of your video is spot on. I am not arguing your point or what you told you viewers. All I added was that of the Newsstand Collectors, Whitman’s were hated by more of those people and therefore the demand will be lower. People don’t hate the Canadians and MJ like they do the Whitmans. I do think the absolute demand for Whitman’s is lower. But they are rare and better than a regular NS to your point. Although I’d put the investment into MJ or Canadians because they don’t have the hate

    Thanks Regie, as usual cutting through the mirk with clear explanation of the Whitman variants with examples. Collectors who are priced out of some Keys could drive up the price of Whitman variants simply because the Whitman variant at the moment while rare, are not as expensive to purchase. In fact I have seen them in some shops in the dollar bins still in poly bags.

What they don’t have is Whitman variant on the CGC slab label. Do you think it should, would that raise the rarity and price?
