    This is just the tip I needed! I perform these tests often in dreams, but after 3-5 minutes of dumb dream brain, my lucidity wavers and I start getting distracted. Regularly repeating the tests won't just help me GET lucid, but stay sharp while lucid.
    I very much could've done with that during this week's two lucid dreams in particular; both went wonky towards the end. At least I achieved my goals in both, but I would've liked to have done more.

    I used to take advantage of situational memory by always studying for exams in the same classroom I'd be taking them in. It almost felt like cheating- I could look idly around the room during an exam and suddenly a stain on the ceiling would remind me of one answer, a cobweb of another, and a cracked piece of chalk of something else.

      @@FabiansPiano That's because sleep paralysis is absolutely not something you'd expect with lucid dreaming. It's a common misconception and piece of misinformation. Sleep paralysis itself is a sleep disorder, and not something anyone would want to invite into their lives. It's certainly not something that should be part of a healthy lucid dream experience or practice.
      It's a long story, but it sounds to me like you're doing just fine.

    I must say, I watched your video about how pitching your nose reality test is better than the finger through palm one. I did the latter one for about a year. But a few days after watching your video, tonight I had a lucid dream. I didn’t do much other than just perform the check again and again. Feeling the air coming out of my nose. Thank you!

    Just doing a reality test more often in general after I get lucid would be a good practice. I’ve occasionally fallen into the trap of getting too caught up in the dream and falling back into it, so I’ll consider this extra incentive to keep it up.

      Hey Jim, all support is massively appreciated - so thank you!
      First step to WILDs is to drop the term WILD :P
      Slapped wrist, we call them maintained awareness dreams 'round these parts! 😂
      In seriousness, they are a VERY fine balancing act, and as you probably picked up in the recent podcast, the variables at play are vast - so sometimes even the best practice won't pay off.
      Keywords to keep in mind are "passive" and "apathy", try to find a focused state that has elements of those, as *trying* tends to have the opposite effect to what is desired.
      I hope that helps.

  • @StumpedSlicken
    @StumpedSlicken Рік тому +2

    It's quite odd how memories work! I think the longest memory I can recall on is the layout of the first house I ever lived in - which we moved out of when I was 4. I remember the room that was mine, my parents room, heck, even where the washer and dryer were! It's weird how my brain still holds onto that layout but it makes sense. As an on-and-off geocacher, I can recall almost every area I've been to to find a cache. I often have memories pop up of locations I've been to once or twice whenever I drive by them or look at a map. It's the situational awareness writing itself and keeping it as I look around for a little box and so I don't get lost. There's also a weird type of memory I get where I overlap a place with a memory. For example, a memory I have is when I was talking to friends online about making keychains, but it reminds me of a roundabout a few towns over. Could that be a misfiring of situational awareness?
    It's also interesting how you brought up that the dream "world" often brings up past dreams. I am now intrigued and want to experiment with it and the limits it may have (I had a dream last night about boxing that I would really like to revisit when lucid)! While I've only had one dream "bring up" another dream (which the other dream never occurred), I do have dreams where I link them together due to how similar they can be, thus bringing up recall of the others. I don't know how to use this tool yet but it could be fun to mess around with!
    This video really gave me some inspiration to work with for my next lucid! Thanks for all the work you do! And trust me, I'll keep that secret at the end safe...unlike the other secret of Cosmøtron!

    Here I thought you were going to be sarcastic.. ^^ Situational memory! That's certainly interesting and something that I've had my experiences with, too. The problem for me: The places I'm usually in in my dreams are completely fictional, and I don't return to them (although there are certain "types" of places that I tend to go to). And I haven't had a fully lucid dream yet, I'm not sure what's wrong (if there is). So I'm not sure how to use that in terms of getting/being lucid.
    But thank you for explaining, it does sound like a useful technique, and I'm gonna try to use it when I can!

    • @LucidDreamPortal
      @LucidDreamPortal  Рік тому +1

      It doesn't seem to require the same location in the dream, but you're building a situational memory on the "feel" of a dream (not the best way to describe it, but we don't have the words for such things). Think of it a bit more in the terms of how you may have situational memory connected to certain feelings.

    Totally getting situational memory and eager to benefit from it as you've explained, thanks Daniel !
    When watching this video, it came back to my mind that I have recurrent periods in everyday life in which I suddenly remember a dream and immediately remember another and another.. as if my brain presents me a string of dreams in waking life.. On top of that, I have some (vague) memories of which I couldn't say if these situations occurred in 'real' life or if they were dreams I once had !! Any explanation or idea if this is relatable to this subject ?

    • @LucidDreamPortal
      @LucidDreamPortal  Рік тому +2

      Very much relatable. This sounds like situational memory too. The chaining of memories is common, as you're firing off related neural pathways. As for the vague memories, they are likely half forgotten dreams - more often than not these are from REM periods early in the night, which few people fully recall.

    Situational memory in dreams is quite odd, your brain obviously works the same in your dreams but since dreams usually seem illogical and disconnected from each other it's hard to clearly tell why a memory was triggered and sometimes it's hard to tell how long ago it was. It's not uncommon for me to wake up and have recall of a dream that feels like it was from a few days ago or more, and it's hard to know if that's actually the case or not. It's also fun whenever you're just going about your day and something suddenly triggers a dream memory, happens to me a lot when I talk to others and sometimes I question whether what I remembered is an actual memory or something that I accidentally came up with on the spot. Trying to distinguish what's what in your mind, especially when it comes to dreams, is difficult.
    This reminds me a lot of your suggestion to use visualization meditation to embed reality tests in old memories. Am I right in assuming that it might be possible to get similar results to this from doing something similar but for dreams you've had in the past? (although I guess it would probably be less effective since you'll only be "retracing your steps" mentally speaking, rather than building entirely new situational memories from within the dream world) Much like one of the steps in MILD, except as a long-term strategy rather than a short-term one.

  • @Aeowyn23

    Very interesting...... now, if I could just stop leaping off of the first available surface once lucid and stop waking myself up I might just remember to RC, stabilize and prolong my dreams long enough to do a second RC 🙄 So far no amount of rehearsal is preventing this, I'm like a kid at the fairground

    My big question is, how to you remember to do reality checks in your dream, I don't even know that I'm dreaming until I wake up, all I've been doing is recording 1 or 2 dreams per night every morning for a month (keeping a phone journal) but I can't seem to have control over remembering that I'm dreaming, even if I wake back to bed, soon as I start dreaming again I have no control or awareness to even remember to remember to check if I'm dreaming.

      That's a very hard question to answer as I've been lucid dreaming for 45 years. Doing a bit of rough mental calculations, it would be around 10k for a conservative estimate - that's assuming between 4-5 a week for 45 years. But goodness knows how accurate that is. Probably more if I count all the additional short lucid dreams, but I generally don't consider a dream a proper lucid dream (for me) if it's under 5 minutes long.
