A 1/4" socket (maybe seldom used on it's own) will drive a magnetic bit extension like you'd typically use to drive bits with a drill chuck. The 1/4" socket will also drive bits directly for tight access (I've found this extremely handy). You already have a socket extension, so just carrying a bit extension plus bits can replace all your conventional screwdrivers and nut drivers - maybe your socket-mounted allens too depending on the torque requirements. When threads are free and you wanna spin, pop your ratchet off and your extension is the handle. whatever other bits you need. I build my own kits for motorcycles. They need to be small!
Whenever you come across another random fasteners on the plane or your equipment that you want your tool kit to handle, chances are all it takes is adding a teeny little bit to your kit.
    Enjoyed the video as always:)

You should have seen the tool and parts kits we used to put aboard the old DC-7's after they had been retired form passenger service and used to run cargo from Miami to South America. When each aircraft has four 18 cylinder engines, you don't just go with tools, you put a case of spark plugs and several extra cylinders onboard, plus assorted hydraulic lines and electrical cables. And oh yeah, a mechanic makes the trip too. Those old radial engines and propellers took so much maintenance, it's a wonder the airline business ever took off.

I have a group of offroaders with custom 4x4's who all take 2 weeks and we go do the Moab desert trails in Utah and camp. In addition to each guys personal gear, there's one each designated special equipment. One guy carries extra fuel, one guy (who's a paramedic) carries all the medical gear, one has a Chuck Wagon for food (he's a pro chef) and so forth. I am the tool guy. We all have our own kit, but I carry the larger kit, my Jeep Rubicon has an engine driven air compressor and I installed a piping all through the jeep with an 40 gallon air tank accumulator. I have four air panels around the truck with retractable hose reels. Plus I carry a large assortment of nuts, bolts, threaded rods, bailing wire and six rolls of T-Rex tape. You'd be amazed at how many exhaust pipes and body panels end up with wire and tape holding them together. All in all I carry about an extra 300 pounds of tools and supplies. I am the rolling garage.

I used to keep a kit like this in my cars... then I finally got a reliable car. Lol
But I definitely understand that Airplanes are far different beasts. Keeping a kit like this in a bush plane just makes so much sense. You never know what can happen when you are too far out for easy help to arrive, and what might be the the simplest issue to fix with the right tools could easily leave you stranded without them.

Used to carry all my work tools with me to and from work.

  • @EZ_shop
    @EZ_shop 4 роки тому +3

Nice kit, Trent. As you mentioned, which tool to include depends on each individual's plane, and the kind of maintenance one anticipates performing away from base. For my Long EZ I started by deciding what a "bad day" might look like for me, and what maintenance I wanted to be able to perform by myself on an apron somewhere. Then I assembled as many tools as needed to perform those actions on my own, realizing that in case of a "really bad day" (aka more serious maintenance) I might need to seek help from other individuals, or perhaps an FBO. With those decisions made, I used my kit in the comfort of my hangar a few times to perform those exact maintenance tasks as they came up during the course of normal flying, say for example spark plugs or main wheel removal and installation. Whenever I found I needed a tool not already in my kit, I'd add it to the kit until I could perform all the maintenance action in my original list with the tools in the kit alone. Later I went out and duplicated all those tools to replenish my hangar's tool box. So the big idea was to first decide what I was willing to work on, and let that decide what tools I needed to carry, then verify the kit effectiveness by using it for the intended purpose a few times. At that point one might add a couple of other tools for unforeseen circumstances if one so desires. Ciao, Marco.

Just a suggestion, you might consider a small digital multi-meter, I recommend a fluke 101 or 106. They are small, light weight, cheep and very handy for diagnosing those electrical gremlins. With all the avionics being electric, having one tool to test fuses, switches and battery voltage might be prudent especially given it only weighs 5 to 7 ounces.

You can generally cheat on SAE vs Metric if you have a full set of 6-point metric sockets at each millimeter increment. Also, if weight and space allow, a coil of generic insulated wire with a few connectors or wire nuts to make temporary repairs to broken, frayed, or burnt wires.

Self fusing silicone tape. You can find it at most hardware stores like Lowe's or even amazon. Great for leaks on any component with an operating temp of -50 to +500 degrees fahrenheit.

I'd recommend a good ratcheting screwdriver with replaceable tips. I have a Husky one that includes a hollow handle with a little 12-space storage block for different bits.
Also, most mechanics will swear by having a Yankee driver, which is essentially a 1/4" ratcheting box-end wrench that's designed to take replaceable screwdriver tips. It's really good for getting at screws in the most annoying spots where no other screwdriver can fit.
Last, roller ratchets. They're not able to withstand quite as much torque as a regular toothed ratchet, but they don't require nearly as much space to rotate in order to turn whatever nut or bolt you're going after.

The only other thing I would do would be to swap out the screw driver for a ratcheting crew driver that has bits in the back of it. I stepped up and got a snap on for the warranty but also for its slim size.
Most ratcheting screw drivers are sorta cheap and they break quickly and are bulky but the snap on one is basically the same size as a normal number 2.
The other advantage is that you can put ratchet adapter bit into your bag and be able to use it like a bit driver without having all of the other bit drivers and it's ratcheting! Really could reduce the size of your kit and save some space and gain flexibility. Great video as always!
P.s. Might pay to have some fuses as well if you don't have spares in the cockpit already.

Rotax is not so prone to plug fouling as a Lyc or Cont, but I would add a plug wrench and spare spark plug.

Dave Wheeler That’s my input as well - my toolkit includes an open end wrench to remove the ignition lead, spark plug socket, and replacement plug.

Definitely would add a spark plug socket and an extra spark plug as mentioned below.

Hey Trent love the diverse topics like this! What would be super helpful and unique I think would be a closer look at bush tyres. Some slo-mo gear leg mounted shots showing what kinds of terrain they open up. Most of us start on cessnas fitted out with pizza cutters and I for one have aborted a few outback strips because I just didn’t know what kind of rut would turn the 172 into a winged turtle 🐢😖

Bailing wire, hose clamps, duct tape are also useful items for remote flights.

safety wire and pliers, needle nose pliers, electric tools, crimpers strippers and connectors or electrical tape and a butane solder iron are some other suggestions.

Sod Law states that the tool you require will go missing at the most inopportune moment. Oh and make sure that your wife does not do a clean up of your workshop. My wife only recognises a tool if it has Stanley written on it every thing else she considers as junk. Regards, Jim in NI UK

Trent, nice kit, the socket wrench extension looks to be a "wobble head" extension (you pull the socket back and it allows a few degrees of "wobble" axial misalignment), you didn't mention that.. way better than the straight.

I love your videos Trent. Keep up the great work. Have you thought about using the Klein 11 in 1 driver? It has several size Phillips drivers, flat head drives, 3/8, 1/4, and 5/16 nut drivers. I keep one in by bag for work and it comes in handy all the time.
