Man I'm a developer and have been a linux user for the past 15 years, the deck is the best piece of tech I've ever played with, it's everything that I ever wanted for a "console", AND THE TRACKPAD? OH MY GOD FINALLY I CAN PLAY FPS GAMES IN A CONTROLLER, cheff kiss, Gabe Newell is an angel.
I think Valve are less focused on dethroning Windows with Steam OS, and more on bringing in new customers. The Steam Deck is designed to be a quick and low maintenance way to play Steam games. Switch on, check for updates and play, with games that may have issues or aren’t supported labelled. If you know what you’re doing, there’s more you can add and you can get unsupported games working on it. The fact that Steam OS is being run on other devices means more potential custom going to Valve. Steam OS currently isn’t great at say using art programmes (Aesprite is unsupported and I think the same goes with Krita), or anything that’s not a game. It’s only going to replace Windows if Valve overcomes that issue.
There is actually an even cooler one. There is someone who actually has the last name Trueblood and they run a real estate company and their logo has blood red accents in it and then their main office sign has TRUEBLOOD in blood red with REAL ESTATE in white below the TRUEBLOOD part. Apparently very few people have that last name.
Itll would never happen best steam os could ever do is put a small dent in windows. So many non gaming pc's use and have to use windows. Certain softwares will only work with windows. Windows will stay king of operating systems. Certain programs i use at my job will not work with Linux or Mac. For gaming id make the switch in a heartbeat.
@ There is plenty of room for growth for SteamOS though. Windows market share in the home environment is where Valve is best poised to make gains on MS.
In official Steam Dock on my table, monitor, keyboard, mouse, ready for travel. More than 1 year and I am more than happy, just love that small smart thing.
I mean you pretty much said it all. It seems like everything Microsoft touches turns to sh!t as they have zero regards for their customers & fans. The sooner Linux takes over the PC Landscape the better.
My biggest problem with steam os is how much harder it is to install and run mods for games, especially when they use an external program or dll to hook into the game. There are so many more steps and searching for how to do it compared to modding on windows. Sometimes I've modded a game on my PC with a mod program that writes the mods into the games files and then copied those over to the deck, other times I've managed to get the deck to load a modding program before the game and add mods that way but that was usually a challenge fo me to setup. Playing the rest of my games I don't want to mod is great and is definitely a much better experience on the deck I can't deny that, but I cant see myself installing steam os on my pc anytime soon due to my familiarity with windows and the ease of troubleshooting and modding compared to the deck.
This is a top, top, issue for people using steamOS going forward. Second only to game compatibility. A lot of devs and execs don't realize just how important modding is to players.
Even if their endgame is to compete with Windows on a broader level than gaming, it's unlikely Valve would come out and say that at this point. SteamOS is awesome, but it's still a far cry from Windows in a lot of ways. What they should do is quietly continue to build their OS and user base. I would love to see them refine desktop mode and give us no reason at all to stick with Windows.
Just gotta say, you look like you've been losing some weight since I started watching about a year ago. Keep it up man and thanks for keeping me informed on my favorite console.
Watching this video on my deck in desktop mode using a foldable iClever keyboard and 15 year old Logitech Nano mouse all hooked up to a dock and output to a 16.1 Arzopa Portable LCD. It performs better in games than my 2018 Acer Nitro Laptop I've been using for nearly 7 years.
People claiming sony won a console war because they sold more plastic boxes is like saying Little Caeser's won the Pizza Wars because they've sold the most Pizza's. It's really more about MAU's these days and Revenue, which Xbox is ahead of Nintendo and they're gaining ground on sony pretty quick.
Just got my Steam Deck back from United Radio due to an issue I had with it, but by fixing one thing, they broke another. They replaced my SSD and screen due to freeze-on-boot problems, but by gutting the system to replace the screen, they messed up the left bumper, causing it to be mushy. I am beyond infuriated because these are supposed to be Valve's "Certified Technicians"
First, you're correct - you have a VERY COOL last name! Second, I fully agree with you that Windows is trash. I have the Lenovo Legion Go and Steam Deck, and I prefer the Steam Deck, but I can hardly touch the Go. I've tried to like it, but Windows just requires too much 'tweaking'. When I'm playing games, I want to turn on the device and just play the game, not have to deal with all the crap that comes along with Windows.
never whined much about windows like some of the diehard apple and linux users when I was growing up. Now, with microsoft copying apple and android smartphone levels of invasiveness, and even worse with default push ads news propaganda and windows nag messages I am done with it. Looking to move to steam os I guess, just want something that is backed by a company with some money and dedication to it
Has the controller sync problem been fixed yet? That’s one of my biggest annoyances so far. Bluetooth controller dies in the middle of a game, then when you resync it, suddenly the steam deck doesn’t recognize it anymore and switching the order of controllers back to the deck itself doesn’t work either. Countless times I’ve had to close a game and lose progress because of that.
I love your last name as well! I also love my last name too :D We should all love our last name! FF7 Rebirth on the Steam Deck will be my first game of the year (although I already Platinumed it on the PS5 last year). I am really really really interested on seeing it run on the Deck!!! What is happening in LA is beyond words... soo damn sad.
SteamOS seems interesting. My steam deck is just very limited for me since it doesnt support a high refresh rate (60htz hurts my eyes), nor does it have the power of my Ally. Interested in seeing if there will be support for it on my Ally.
Jimmy my question is where do you stand on the graphics matching up to the hardware as far as on the console or the steam decks and the way that they don't finish certain games or the way that frame rates will drop or some games have the graphical detail not fully there or what is your ideal thing as far as graphical detail do you believe in all games should have a balanced graphical detail whether it is on the steam deck or on the PlayStation basically do you think the hardware should be matched up with the games as they're released so you get the best graphical detail all around no matter what Hardware it is that's out there
It's always been obvious to me that Valve has no interest in taking on windows. They were completely dependent on windows previously, so making themselves less dependent is what they were (and still are) after. They'll happily let their alternative grow bigger and they'll take what performance and ux benefits they can, but there's no sense in wasting resources on a head on confrontation. Showing Microsoft they don't need them is enough...
as far as cool names go, you know the guy that did all the SVU tv shows? Dick Wolf. That's kind of a bad ass name too. I wouldn't be surprised if THAT was a "stage" name
I can't help but wonder if he uses the 007 format of presenting his name: "Wolf, Dick Wolf" and even if he doesn't there are countless situations where his name will be listed as Wolf, Dick.
Has Valve been able to fix the new bugs in their updates for instance have they fixed the issue with the touchscreen problems where it has stoppes working or the fact the screen dims when you wake it up from sleep. Its just its been ages now and these issues can with the update for me
I’m considering buying a steam deck at the end of the month to take to work cause I work long night shifts sitting at a desk scrolling on my phone I’m unsure tho would you recommend for a non pc gamer who’s only ever used PlayStation
Thank you champagne from Los Angeles as well. It’s hard. It’s devastating. Thank you for bringing that out. Keep on the good work. It’s so good to watch you just to put your mind elsewhere for the moment. Thank you and God bless you.🙏🏼🫶🏼💙
When I read your name, my first thought was that Champane was short for Champion Panel. So I guess I was wrong, although it would have beel cool regardless.
Yeah want nothing to do with bloated windows 11. Can’t wait for steam os come to desktop PCs. Just hope it comes with GTX 1xxx/RTX 2xxx or newer support.
@BobDevV Bazzite does not not support GTX 1xxx for game mode or what ever it’s called. Says so when you go to there website. And yes I know Nvidia isn’t open source. That the issue. Nvidia while slowly getting better. They still very anti Linux. I’ve tired popos in the past and was horrible. Valve hasn’t said any thing officially, so who knows what they plan to do for steam os, or if they support Nvidia gpu. They may or they may not. I hope they do.
SteamOS or Linux in general needs a proton/wine or native way of running VR games on it, with various headsets, such as HTC or Meta Quests. Its the only thing that stops me as I dont care about anticheat in games I never play multiplayer.
My main problem with steam OS is hardware compatibility. Like using linux with Nvidia. It isn't easy to keep a linux PC using Nvidia graphics cards running correctly.
I'm really excited for KCD 2 and I hope it's going to be mod-friendly. Installing mods shouldn't feel like rocket science! One thing I dislike about the Steam Deck is how complicated it is to get mods running compared to Windows, where it just works. Another issue is the locked controller polling rate at 250Hz, with no option to adjust or even see it. Windows, on the other hand, offers comprehensive controller configuration through DS4Windows, allowing players to fine-tune their controllers to their liking. The Steam Deck's controller configuration feels like a maze, with confusing deadzone values and other settings that use numbers instead of percentages. It's not very user-friendly and can be quite frustrating. So, if you're unsure about which handheld to choose, here's a simple breakdown: If you find games without mods boring and want hassle-free multiplayer with no anti-cheat issues, stay away from the Steam Deck. Only get a Steam Deck if you prefer playing vanilla games and have a lot of patience. If you enjoy tinkering, keep in mind that Linux isn't built for the average console player.
i live in southern Cali , and it's only in a select location. All these invasive trees that burn like fuel, that's one issue. call me a c.t , but these fires are by design
Dude, you're talking like if Sony wasn't a third-party publisher. Just like Microsoft, Sony also has put their games on PC and even Nintendo switch with their Lego version of horizon, so if you're going to mention Microsoft going third party, you might as well mention Sony too.
If Steam OS becomes an officially maintained linux distro that's like Windows, I will switch to it on desktop. I'll run .exes through wine and not give a shit.
Microsoft has been spending a year or more breaking Windows 11 into tiny little pieces. I honestly think that Valve has an advantage because they are going for quality and making gamers happy. It's a big difference from the woke mindset tearing MS Corp to pieces right now.
