As someone who occasionally writes fiction, naming characters is always a difficult step for me. This advice will probably come in handy for naming my fursona…that is, if I can ever finish designing them… 😓
Just use a shotgun approach, it sounds like a bad idea but if you have a digital text it is easier. nest the names as a list, one will quickly start to stand out. I have a rather absurd character who is literally called "Commander" just to intimate people. I never would have picked it, it was a placeholder and now it is by far my favorite name..

My sonas name, Leomhann, a lion, came through the idea, that it does represent me. My real name, Leon, comes from the Latin and Greek words for Lion, and I thought, his name should have the same meaning.
So I looked up various translations for the word lion and liked the Scottish Gaelic translation "Leòmhann", and just removed the accent line of the o.
Leon is a cool name to have in real life!
My sona's name is Yolky, because she has an egg floating over her head and I love eggs lol! Awesome video, Finn! :3

I took my fursona’s first name (Soren) from the books Guardians of Ga’Hoole, and the last name is based on what my family name was before we emigrated from Russia.
Ah the Guardians of Ga'Hoole was such a good series to read as a kid. The movie wasn't half bad either!

Thank you for these wonderful tips. I just recently joined the fandom a few weeks ago and I love it I already found my fursona but I Agree that naming your fursona is the hardest part. My fursona is a wolf. His colors are Bright Red ears, Gray Snoot, green fur and teal face.
My fursona has 2 names. Ghost/Vile.
For the 1st name, I picked Ghost because I always felt like a invisible ghost and the ghost of my past self.
For the 2nd name, I picked Vile because I was always the black sheep of my family, the bad influence. I always hear my family talk about me like I'm a literal vile evil monster.

And my sona's name is BubbleGum, she is a fluffy dragon and is blue with pink spots, just like bubblegum! Blue is my favourite colour so I obviously started off with that as a base colour for my character, and ended up designing something I really loved the flavour of as a child. I also thought her colours kind of represent a transgender flag, blue pink and White.

I got the name “Jolt” from my fursonas Lightning bolt pattern, and energetic and wild personality.

The reason i named my fursona "Tnt" is because i already was using this name in many acounts and i didn't have a better name for him (also i already had a Minecraft OC called Tnt so i decide to transform him into my fursona)
I usually start with a name and then try to visualize what they might look like later. Mainly working on reference details about them. It is my only family I ever plan to have. I was never going to have a lucrative job/career in the arts, so this keep me happy in the meantime. Adulthood is a racket enough already in USA.
i do feel like fursona names are getting weirder, but u can only have so many kages, kibas, and kodas, so while it's a welcome change, i don't know how many of those names will be memorable! we'll have to give it a few years.
i also feel like whether or not folks give their OCs ordinary human names is a hint at how much experience they've had in similar communities/interests before winding up here. almost all of mine have human(esque) names, and that tracks, as i wasn't involved in related communities before this. but all the people who have nonhuman names for their fursonas have a certain kind of swag to them - just as long as those names aren't insensitive
How I came up with my name:
1. "I'm interested in astrology so a space-themed fursona"
2. "One of my favorite games is Scribblenauts and there are these things called Starites so why not name him after those stars things?"
My name comes from when my parents used to play World of Warcraft: my dad let me have a character on his account, and the game rolled the name Farriba for the Tauren Hunter I made. Years later, I started using the name again only to realize people had a hard time saying it, so I took the last name of my mom's main.

I fell in love with the name Kvasir because of the Norse mythos behind him, a man born from two God's saliva, became the wisest of men and a spectacular bard/poet. His death created the Mead of Poetry, with who would drink it would become an outstanding scholar or poet. His death basically created music according to the Nords
The story behind my fursona's name is simple, but I like what I came up with.
One day I got curious and asked my parents what other name(s) would've they given me when I was born. Turns out I was almost named José Luis. I just knew that I had to use it somehow.
I liked Luis, but didn't want to give my sona a regular name, I ended up cutting out the last two letters.
And thus Lu the opossum came to be.
Funny thing is, Lu went through three different designs before landing on the current and definitive one. But the name remained consistent.
I've been a long time watcher of the fandom and am just now starting to get active in it. I started to create my first fursona (honestly just to have one) and it he is based off of The TARDIS from Doctor Who. He's TARDIS blue with white highlights. I know... I wound up making my first fursona a Sparkle Dog. 😅
The best name I've come up with so far is Nick O'Time... I'm not sure I'd want to be referred to as Nick when interacting with other furs but I've told a few people about the name and they seem to like it.
I went by the process of "Cool word, now I am unintentionally designing a character from it mentally"
That is how my current (not drawn yet) primary fursona came to be, Neo Lux. Neo is a word with part of it's meaning derived from new, and lux is Latin for light. So his name is essentially New Light.

My fursona is called Doodle, which I might change in the future - but I have another character called TwentySeven/27 because of 2 reasons
1 - I used to have a maths teacher when I was like 8 who would encourage us to guess answers on a test if we only had a few minutes left and found the question hard. I always managed to subconsciously have 27 in my guessed answers, so its a nod to that teacher, cause he was pretty great
2 - When I told my dad why I liked the number 27 (Because the reason above), he reminded me that my sisters were born on the 27th, I remember now but I didn't back then, so its also for them!

The ones I love most are all randomly made, by either accident or just the first name that came to my head when making them.
Ranky is my main sona, he's a blue raccoon. His name is the cause of me mispronouncing Rocky when thinking of names that are normally for raccoons.
Smokey Night is another one, she's purple and grey with navy blue accents, I'm guessing her color palette influenced what my brain named her from early on.
Goya is my husky and his name is completely random. Just the word my brain spouted out when I named the file he was made on.
Ferian, my thoroughbred horse was also completely random. Just the name the depth of my brain wanted to name a horse if I was to ever get one.
I also have ones with a little more thought put in but they still have that random touch I seem to add to my characters - makes them unique, I find
Denovo Anew, my second main sona, is because I always saw the name Novo with his design but I didn't want to name him Novo, I found it too feminine for him. So I looked up words that contain Novo in them and found De Novo, which means Anew. So I put them together and got Denovo Anew.
Skiibra is my Dutchie and she's based around the two zodiacs I'm under, hence her name, Scorpio+Libra = Sc Ibra and then I put them together to make Skiibra
Taeamun is based around the two places in the world I love most, Tae for Korea and Amun for Egypt
Flume is a Shire Horse and he was named by my bestie, I just gave her a drawing of him and she responded back with Flume and it stuck. So also, don't be afraid to ask a friend or family member about a name. They might help you get inspired or downright give you the name you feel is right for them. Asking for help is always a good step if you're stuck! Name generators and chat ai also can help, they've helped me name ocs and species too.
I find naming furries and mlp characters a lot easier since the character usually tells you the name from their design, but for human based characters, those I can be thinking of names for literal years!

My Fursonas name was originally Greytail. Its a warrior cats name. After i joined the furry fandom i just made her a furry and since she is a grey Cat i called her Gray…. Very Creative

I can’t remember where my 2nd sona’s name came from (first was unnamed), but for the 3rd, I just took the name of the 2nd and slightly changed it. They’re both the same type of animal (b i r d) and nothing else sounded right, so that ended up being a good solution and felt like a natural progression of ideas.
My name originally came about just because I loved the word Maelstrom. I used it as my name when creating online accounts/character names, including Second Life. At that time, back in 2009, Second Life gave you options to pick from a list of surnames for your avatar, and "Eyre" was one of them. I thought "oh, Maelstrom Eyre, I like that." My character gradually evolved from that, until she became the Akhlut pirate-wannabe she is today. :)

I named my character in a way that I thought would fit the role of the character in its background story.
I eventually came up with the long name of ‘Aerus Elestias Sakousamis’, an Ancient Greek celestial dragon (with a really complex design).
I also came up with another character that I would use in the future if I started a small friend group. The character would act as some sort of mascot. Its name is ‘Hremnir’, an owl-dragon hybrid.

When I made my fursona, I called it rame, which means the mix of chaotic and joyful energy!
My fursona is such a mishmash in a number of ways, yet naming her was surprisingly simple for me. A smaller fursuit maker I like offered a discounted slot for an artistic choice partial, species being the purchaser's choice. I decided to go with a Jackalope because bunnies and antlers are awesome, and I'm a fan of American folklore and Weird West adjacent media. The naming was almost easy; I decided Beatrix "Double Lucky" Douglas. Beatrix for writer and illustrator Beatrix Potter (my gateway to Furry as a kid!), and Douglas for Douglas, WY where Jackalope licenses can be obtained, AND for Douglas Herrick who mounted the first Jackalope taxidermy. "Double Lucky" as her gambler's nickname comes from my idea of the only thing luckier than a rabbit's foot would be two rabbit's feet.

After I made my character, I ended up naming him Hysteria, after the Def Leppard album because I always have loved them since I was little. I also named him that because I love rock music as well as my fursona, and the colors of my fursona are blue, white, grey, and black, Which I noticed were similar to the colors of Hysterias album art. :)
Some people found this a bit cringe, but yk what furrys are cringe lol.

Surname is a typo, and after seeing that it's actually a surname real people have, I rolled with it
Not a lot of thought was put into it but in my defense, I'm more of a visuals guy and I've never been good with words, plus the band Autechre picked their band name the same way and still do it when naming their tracks.
I named my fursona Turtle as he is generally chill and lazy, which is how i see turtles
Wall is named for the legendary Pink Floyd album "The Wall". I chose that name because he represents the side of me that once dreamed of being a rock star, except he succeeded in achieving that dream.

My fursona is a Tiger. She has a very grandma and kind personality. I choose the name Oaklynn for her since she had a very gold tone and I saw that in other languages when the word “gold” was spelt it had a “O” was the first letter most of the time. I know she has a strong personality and I wanted a nature-esk name since her style. So I saw Oakly then I went with Oaklynn!! (Sorry if it’s confusing)
My fursona’s name is Jazza because he is an artist. And the Artist that inspired me to start art aswell was Jazza (Formely known as Draw with Jazza).
My fursona's name was easy to choose, its the name ive been using on the internet since 2015 (I joined the fandom past year).
After a few months in the fandom I narrowed it down to between a Fox or wolf (cause I like them both), so I decided to do a hybrid of both. Recently managed to find a ref sheet with a character design that I liked. I know it's a bit of a shortcut, but it looked so good and I liked it. Now I'm at the difficult part of naming my fursona. I have one fursona, a brown+dark brown+beige+lime green+dark green maned wolf-shark. His name is Creed because the name always sounded like a badass name to me and I’ve always wanted a fursona named like that.

My fursona name is based on my irl name ofc with a little help from the kingdom hearts website,I added the extra x on my fursona name like Maxx for example. Originally I thought I was use smiley for my smile dog fursona from creepypasta,but i realized it was too childish and whimsical.
I gave my fursona a huge update bout 8 years ago, where I also changed her name. Since I thought the markings on her kinda looked like electricity, I named her Elyktra, but since I could never spell it right, I just shortened it to Elykra. Whats also funny about that is that Elykra looks similar to the word Elytra, which are a bug's wings, and Elykra also has wings (albeit not bug wings), and I love bugs. After that, the name just stuck.
I chose GearJammer because my family and I have always been into heavy trucks and tractors. My grandfather used to haul cattle, my father was a trucker (now a diesel mechanic) and the first vehicle I drove with my permit was a two ton dump truck, so we’ve been jammin’ gears for years
I named my fursona Stormy because of my friends, and family calling me stormy (whitch is close to my name) as a tease. I feel attached to it because of the kind joking that has gone on my whole life and I feel its something I want to keep with me.
My fursona name was originally my town name for animal crossing new leaf! I really liked lucario (and still do) so I added the "Lu" part. And I wanted the town name to aound fancy, so I just added "prina" at the end

I chose my name to be cirrus because i wanted to base it off of the name of the friend who introduced me to the fandom. Their name at the time was Skye, and from there i looked at clouds, and cirrus just clicked.

My sonas name is Malakai. After finishing my tarantula guy based on my pet tarantula, the name just popped into my mind. I didn't even know it was a real name until months later lol.
My 3 other main sonas are called Salem (Eldritch fox), Avery-Mordecai (Vampire-Crow Hybrid) and Ty (Tyler - Wolf pup).
I have several side sonas and characters too but those 4 are the ones i identify most and that are basically portraying different parts of myself or how I would like to be. Names just popped up randomly or just felt right when I looked tthrough websites for baby names or other names until something clicked. Finding the right name can take some time, though.
My fursona is a house cat named Toby, he was named Toby because the name kinda sounds like toe-bean and honestly it's adorable

My fursona's name was just Kai but with the letters moved

My sona is this Hyena Deer dog hybrid named Korri Jay or just Korri. Their name comes from how my birth name's nickname sounds, and their last name is just one of my nicknames now! Korri was one of the names I was debating on using for myself, so I decided just to slap it on them and call it a day-

"Sawen" is a toki-ponized version of my 'real' name, which I ended up reusing as my fursona's name because I like the way it sounds.
Although I came up with a different in-universe backstory for the name, and also gave them a last name (their full name is Sawen Diyan).
I chose my fursona name by translating Lynx in multiple languages until I found a name that I liked lmao- I love my fursona name
Made a username for online gaming years before I found the fandom, then I think I designed a fursona around that name.
I do wonder what kind of sona I would have come up with if I didn't have the name to guide me..
Mine is weird. I picked it beacuse I had a want to not be seen as a leader leading to not using capital letters n0etic is intended to look like an error and not be a name even looking like a product number. The term relates to how the mind interacts with reality. It is a nod to being an avatar pressing keys and having my intent displayed to others.
My fursona name came from the thoughts of candy and wanting to think more positive over negative.

I came up with my sona name just starting with dragon (my sona is a dragon) and then turned it into the name dronko, in the process I kept thinking
Draco (like one person from harry potter) but I didn't want the name to possibly relate to it.
I decided pretty early on that my sona's name and my furry/online name would be different since I used to change my fursona a lot. funny enough though, not long after I did that I designed my main sona Marxzen aaaaand have had them for around 3 and 1/2 years now. no clue how I came up with his name though, it just kinda popped outta thin air and stuck. it fits it though lol
my sona's name and just, overall gimmick is just a series of bad puns. We have Kolypso the Dropbear, designed after Ultra Fiesta Monster Energy. A dropbear is like, a big evil koala, a *Monster* koala, dare I say. And mangoes come in the Calypso variety, hence Ko-lypso. Its all a bit of a meme lol
My sonas name is Leiko. I pronounce it Leak-o even though its pronounced differently. It means "little flower" in japanese, i gave him this name because of him being a smol man and the fact he has a kind personality. I usually translate words with meaning in japanese to name my characters so their names can symbolise what their personality is.
