      One thing to keep in mind regarding the mortgage rates; when you take a mortgage, you are effectively shorting the underlying currency. If you think the RUB will be hugely devalued, even at high rates, this may make sense. If the 1 million RUB in today's rates buys you a house, but 10 years from now only buys you a new phone, you will have made out like a bandit, assuming your salary more or less keeps up with inflation. However, given that level of devaluation, there are probably much bigger problems in your society.

      I think Russia is "irrational," as you say, in a sense, because it's engaged now in an enterprise that can't possibly pay off in any normal way, considering the costs involved, the lives ruined, and the animosity being generated. But seen from Putin's perspective, what he's forcing Russia to do makes some sense, since quitting the war now or easing up on the repression would likely result in his disgrace & death.

      Speaking of first cars: I bought my first car -- a 10 year old Daihatsu Charade -- when I was 33 in 1996. But I'd owned motorcycles almost continuously since I was 17. Honda dual-purpose are my first love: 1974 XL350, then 1980 XR250, 1986 XR600, and then after a 20 year gap without a dirt-capable bike a CRF250 Rally in March 2020. And have always had a BMW tourer (R80RT, K100RT, R1100RT) from 1988 until today. Cars: always Subaru 2.5 wagon, Legacy or Outback, since 2001. The current (2008) one is turbocharged.

      they don't count as much as the oil industry experts that are gone, the engineers, the people who know how things work and can fix them. IT losses are REALLY very small compared to what they've lost in expertise required to keep the basics going.

    • @Joe-Dead
      @Joe-Dead 2 дні тому +1

      @@daveamies5031 no they are not 'equally' valuable. the world existed and ran before computers, the basics of society can be handled without computers as history has shown. if the rest of your industry is FAILING then IT is useless because it has nothing to manage. computerization is for a nation with means to support that luxury, and it is a luxury, it makes things EASIER but it is not REQUIRED beyond financial service to interface with the rest of the world...and you don't need many people for that.
      do try to keep in mind IT as a career is relatively NEW and the world worked fine without it. you CANNOT get by when you don't have people who can fix what breaks, fabricate parts, populate factories and public services or the professions such as health care. IT, hate to tell ya bud, is bottom of the importance list in a functioning nation or society...proven by how well the world got along before.

The Russian Army just left the bodies of most of the dead where they had fallen, and refused to accept Russian soldiers' bodies the Ukrainians had recovered. Either a Derecho (linear wind storm), or possibly a Bomb Cyclone (an inland hurricane). Either way, 150kph+ winds and heavy rain don't do good things to a city's infrastructure. Trees down on roads and power lines, flooding, damage to underground service lines, etc, etc. All fun stuff for a city maintenance department to fix - especially if said city has sent all it's maintenance workers to the war...

      A derecho is something very different. It is characterized by straight line winds and massive shelf clouds preceded by a cohesive bow shock. My sisters in Cedar Rapids, Iowa were in the 2020 derecho. Wind speeds in the city were up to 205 km/h. Trees were shredded and roofs ripped off buildings.

When he moved out of Russia and moved to Kazakstan, and started really reporting on Russia, I started watching regularly. Count me as a subscriber. BTW years ago I lived and worked in Afghanistan circa 1970-71, before the revolution. Almost all the taxis were Ladas and almost all gov vehicles were Russian versions of a "jeep." I just pulled my old copy of the Guide to Self Sufficiency by John Seymour. His ideal is at least 5 acres to support 5-6 people. But this would be conditional on the property being medium to good land.
    "I would set aside one of my acres for the house, farm buildings, kitchen garden, and orchard, and the other 4 acres I would divide into eight half-acre plots. Three of them I would put down to grass every year, and there I would run: two cows for dairy produce; four sows, a boar, some sheep and some geese for meat; and some chickens for eggs. As well as these animals I would keep ducks, rabbits, pigeons and bees wherever I could fit them. Now, on the five remaining plots I would sow: wheat; roots; Jerusalem artichokes or potatoes; peas and beans; oats, and barley undersown with grass and clover."

It was crushing, many ppl lost their homes when their mortgages came for renewal because the rates had doubled in many cases. Before the invasion I had neither bad or nor good view of Russia itself, but I didn't like it's leadership because of Salisbury poisoning in the UK which threatened the life of innocent UK citizens. There are many Russians who do swallow the Kremlin propaganda but many that don't; but they can't do much about it. Russian society strikes a balance of normality for it's citizens so far which makes protesting and putting yourself in jail (or killed) not really worth it for the average Joe, but Putin's war of aggression is starting to change conditions so who knows what's next.

    Your news selection is superb. Most news one hears, about ANY country, even one's own, is surface news, like "this or that happened", and most of it is not tied to human consciousness, to sociology, to how memes and/or citizens' views evolve. What you are providing is the pulse of Russia's public consciousness, and the events that are shaping its evolution in real time. I know more about Russians than I know about Canadians, probably, thanks to you, Constantin. Keep up the good work.

      Even if he sometimes jokes, I understand the pain of this man. He loves Russia, but he sees it "plunging into darkness".
      Russian culture has counted heavily in world history.
      I admire this people; in another life, I must have been Russian, especially thanks to reading Chekhov, the beauty of Mendeleev's table of elements (because I am a physicist), the music of Tchaikovsky and that of Borodin, to name a few.
      But I hate its government which is nothing but a cruel and murderous manipulative mafia.
      The day when the real Russia wakes up, drives out these murderers, stops the war, establishes a just and lasting peace, it will have immense prestige all over the world.
      The Russians will have to heal their wounds, and above all, they will have to change their enemies into friends: even the Ukrainians!.
      Let us hope that the genius of this people will manifest itself in this way.

    I-m English, born 1957, my first car was a Morris Minor produced 1948-1971. It was so simple so robust there was nothing to go wrong. It always started no matter what the weather, rain, ice snow. I loved that car, it growled, would only do 70 mph on the motorway but that was the speed limit, used virtually no petrol, but I was a student. If someone offered me a Morris Minor for 500 Euros today I would break his hand off to shake yes. OK I would not swap my Mercedes 500SL. However, one of my friends from the balkans had a Lada Niva in Soviet winter Camoflage. He loved it, simple reeliable and Cute. Let’s see, the cities are showing that women outnumber men, the high tech. Industry is also severely in need of manpower, the prosthesis needs have increased exponentially, the energy exports have fallen dismally causing severe economic deficits, historic Allies are abandoning for fear of sanctions, the war economy is touted as increasing GDP even though the military weapons and ammunition production will further increase the death and destruction of all combatants and waste the finances needed to support a failing economy! It seems that Putins leadership will condemn Russia and its people into a failed state with little hope that wealthy countries will aid in reconstruction since that aid will be going to Ukraine! What a mess!!!

    I looked at a Niva in eastern Canada. It was brand new & the keys came in a little paper sack, The keys were rusted together & I had to pry them apart. The dealer had to boost it to get it started.
    The transmission either had no oil in it, or there were bad bearings in the transmission. In order to drive it, I had to keep the choke partially on. To shift gears, the transmission had to be double clutched. Within one mile it overheated. I called the dealer to come & get me & the Niva. This was in the early 70ies. Now, in defense of Lada, I had a friend that owned a Lada & also two Niva's.
    His Niva's were both useable , & the parts were insanely cheap. I drove them many times & if you could get a wheel on anything, you were going ! It was excellent in heavy snow, sand, or mud. You constantly had to be fixing SOMETHING, but cheap parts & easy to fix made it OK has a vehicle, as long as you could fix it yourself.

    My 1st car was a 1992 Mercury Topaz, handed down by my parents. It was junk, but I loved it. I still remember my 1st solo drive in it after I got my license, and it felt like pure freedom. I loved it so much, I followed in my father's and his father's footsteps into the auto industry. I've been a part of building Ford Trucks for 25 years now. Our careers overlapped a bit, but my family has served 93 years at Ford so far. Dad retired with 35 years, and Grandpa retired after 33 years. Ain't nothing like a Ford truck, especially my all-electric 2023 F-150 Lightning

      Opel Ascona. 1976 Model. Mostly green, but let s say multicolored 😅The left window kept falling down into the door. My mechanic was so tired of fixing it that he mounted the entire window into the door so it couldn t go up or down. But, I was happy with the repair. Problem solved. The disaster on 4 wheels lasted for more than a year. In which was a miracle. I got back about half of what I spent on it with scrap payment. Not too bad of a deal.😅 I can t stand electric cars though. I ll wait and pray it s not needed for me to buy one. Ever. Hopefully Toyota is right and Hydrogen cars is a thing. Is it true that Tesla has fake engine sound in their cars? Not for me. I love my BMW Z4. The sound of this 6-cylinder engine is like nothing else.

      @raypeeler3585 2 дні тому

      @ofusowre7620 I don't know if Tesla makes a sound, but years ago, Congress talked about making it mandatory for all EVs to make a sound for safty; it would be like a ring tone that you could choose, for the safety of those around the car, especially the sight impaired. My 7,000 lb EV truck is absolutely silent; I had to get the 1 with a ton of cameras so I could see my cats; they're absolutely fearless of it, i guess because they can't hear it. EVs aren't for everyone or every application, but I absolutely love mine. I'll never go back to gas, but it works for me. 8,000 miles so far, and there's no maintenance except rotating the tires like any truck and a coolant change around 50k miles. Also, I charge for free at work anytime I want, usually once a week, and I get 320 miles per charge. I haven't paid for any fuel in about 8 months; just the loan payments and insurance. 0-60 in 3.9 sec, and for a full-size pickup, it's a smoother ride than a Lincoln Navigator.

      @@raypeeler3585 Don t get me wrong. I understand others like them. I m sure it s a great car. I m just too much of a petrol head. But, I also question if the world has the energy to completely move on to electric cars only. I m from Europe and it s a limit how much electricity can be spent on the cars. Electricy bills have already been very high. We need the electricity for heating our homes. This is still in early stages. I believe it s only about 10 percent of the total amount of cars being electric. I just can t see it work out in the long run with millions of electric cars draining energy resources. I actually fully believe Toyota is correct. Other solutions will rise to take over. EVs will only be a part of the solution. It simply doesn t add up logically for me.

    • @ofusowre7620
      @ofusowre7620 День тому +1

      Wow. I checked. In the USA it s actually only 1 percent. I was way off. New cars sold is about 9 percent in which was the number I was thinking of.. It only cement my point. It won t work. It s a bubble for sure.

    • @raypeeler3585
      @raypeeler3585 День тому

      @ofusowre7620 yea, suddenly every1 in the US is afraid of EVs. It was all the rage 4 years ago. I can't blame em, change is scary. And I can empathize with your situation; it's far more important to have affordable electricity in your home, and there's already a distribution network for gas & diesel. We would definitely need more power plants, maybe double if we were to transfer the American fleet's energy needs to the electric grid as-is, but it's time to update the infrastructure anyway and we need to diversify our energy portfolio, in part with dispersed solar in spaces not being used like the tops of office buildings. I've heard France is building nuclear plants and making real progress with fusion power. That would be amazing. Hydrogen does work; Apollo made it to the moon in 1969 on Hydrogen fuel cells and Tesla is talking about switching to something hydrogen soon. I think Toyota's idea is a bit different; something about using hydrogen directly in an ICE style motor. Problem is, making hydrogen is a dirty process and mile for mile, it takes more electricity than if you just drove an EV. I'd like to see more clean power plants and let everyone keep their car plugged in when they're home and the car is just sitting there. It's probably different in you're case, but here in the US, there's so, so many neighborhoods of 100s of houses; it almost feels criminal to put black tar shingles on our roofs instead of solar tiles, to help offset the EV needs. Nothing wrong with staying connected to the grid, but any US home owner ought to be helping out with energy production if they can. The government or the power companies should offer to rent my roof space to put up solar tiles for a discount on my power bill, at least. In any event, I'm planning on buying a solar roof next year, but it's pretty expensive upfront. Supposedly there's a 20-year warranty and that's about how long it takes to brk even; coal-fire electricity is pretty cheap around here, but it's filthy

    My first car was a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GT, it had heated leather seats, a sunroof, and my favorite feature a heads-up display on the windshield! At night I could push a button that would turn off the dash and put the car into “stealth mode” and I could see my speed on the display instead. God I loved that car!

    I think the Russian people should know that more young Russian men have been killed in Ukraine than were killed in WWII of the Americans in both theaters. Americans in Asia and Europe lost around 420,000 people and the Russians have already exceeded this in Ukraine. It is a big number.
