I've been slacking it all my life, I saved this in my playlist because I want to draw better and stick to it. Thank you for making this video, I watched it a year ago but I didn't pay attention.
I'm fairly certain you are the best teacher I've ever seen. The way you explain and break everything down in clear and definable ways, I think is honestly just miles ahead of all the other people trying to teach art or really anything to me that I've experienced so far in my life. It also definitely helps that I'm actually invested in learning now though lol. Like with gesture drawing it's my (quite possibly entirely incorrect) impression that the initial learning of gesture drawing is so far behind a lot of the people I try and learn from that when they teach it it's kind of just something like 'do the line of action/spine maybe, do the hips, bam bam bam and we're done, really just feel it out' because it comes pretty easily to them at the advanced point in their career that they're in, whereas you can appreciate that some people have zero real idea of what they're supposed to be doing (or at least aren't able to fully grasp the more vague methods) and can then break it down accordingly into a clear and defined way that makes it so easy to grasp the essentials of what you should be focusing on. I started from absolute zero a few months ago, and initially was just trying to follow those kinds of more vague methods for gesture drawing, 30 minutes of 30 second, 1, 2, 5, or 10 minute gesture drawings a day, and I definitely made some progress, but after starting to really pay attention to your videos and fresh eyes challenge I feel like I've gained so much more understanding so much more quickly than I had doing all that for a couple months, and I'm more and more starting to actually 'gesture draw' rather than trying to maybe do the spine somehow and then just kind of slipping into doing the contour I saw, maybe with a ribcage or pelvis type shape in there sometimes. Wish I would've started off with LLD but only a few months of flailing around definitely isn't bad at all, and may even have been necessary to 'fully' (know I probably still can't fully-fully appreciate it due to where I am skill/knowledge wise lol) appreciate your content, definitely glad I found LLD so early into trying to learn. The most value/information dense resource I've had the privilege of seeing so far. So thank you, for being so awesome, and also so entertaining and funny while you're at it. And your whole attitude and approach to art is so great, whenever I watch your videos I'm thinking "this is the guy, this is the real art-man," lol
Forgot my initial reason for writing that while I was doing it, but I just remembered it's because ambient occlusion, something I've heard talked about a decent amount and seen as a setting in games for years, even looked up a couple times to try and get a better idea of what it was, I'd never fully understood what it meant even though I now realize what a simple concept it is. In a couple seconds in a video not even expressly about lighting/shading, the way you explained ambient occlusion took me from "Ambient occlusion? That's something to do with that shadow stuff I guess." to fully understanding what it is/what the term means and is referring to lol. Like I'd had all the pieces to understand it I now see, but your brief explanation was what triggered them into all fitting together, making me go "Oh, how did I not understand this for so long?" lol 😭and that was what made me think, "Yeah, I need to leave a comment about what a great teacher this guy is."
Reminds me of some of my past student days!! I have long been a fan of the weightedness of a figure and it is something I have long sought to emphasize!!
Yep! You did it again Kenzo. your tutorial gets my vote of approval. hopefully following your instruction my drawings will soar into the stratosphere and gain a “weighty” approval from you!
There’s so much useful information in this video, it’s hard to believe it’s only 10 minutes! That’s even better though, this is definitely a video I’ll come back to whenever I’m feeling like I can’t figure out what’s ‘off’ about my figure drawings (it’s hard to convince myself to go back to longer videos often 😅) Thank you 💕
I actually took out a pen and paper and took notes on this video! As a "self-taught artist", your videos and your reference library have been amazing resources on my art journey! The fresh eyes challenge helped me leave an art/skills plateau and I'm sure these tips on giving weight will help me leave the plateau I'm currently in. Thank you for being such an awesome teacher! I can tell you are very thoughtful with each lesson or challenge!!
Hi Kenzo, these tutorials have been invaluable for me to improve my figure drawing. I was teaching myself here in Brisbane Australia last two years during the Covid lockdown. Being self taught I didn’t know what I was doing and I didn’t know how to make them look real. Before CoVid I couldn’t draw a stick figure, now after the Fresh eyes challenge, these extra tutorials and the reference library I now look at my drawings and think that I am really making progress with quite lifelike figures. Even my wife says so! So ThankYou so much. Keep them coming. You are a good teacher.
Great video as always, Kenzo. Until I started with LLD I started several courses and always quickly got to a point of “I think this is for people more advanced than me,” because the teachers don’t remember what it was like to be a beginner, but you do. And each little step is doable. It still involves a lot of hard work and practice, but now there’s a clear road map and no huge impossible leaps between one lesson and the next. I’m a study group member.
Thank you, Kenzo! This is very insightful, I really love your approach to figure drawing, this video about weight is definitely helpful to improve the quality of our drawings!
Thank You so mucho kenzo, I realize that I improve my drawings a lot with your videos, tutorial and challenges. Otherwise, something that make me sweat is the foreshortening, omg, that's hard for me, but i'll be practicing a lot with all that photos 😃. Nuevamente, gracias Kenzo 🙏🙏🙏
I know this is unrelated, but I'm having trouble drawing/painting sheer or see-through fabric. I would appreciate it if you made a video about this topic. Thanks 🙏
I remember a moment from the movie "Frida" with Salma Hayek. Her husband Diego Rivera painted naked figure. He asked her: Frida, something is wrong, can you tell me what? And she went to the canvas. Not enough weight here, Diego. And put a sign in one bold motion under the breast of the figure. Thanks for the video, Kenzo! =)
Really appreciate all your videos. Have recently found the channel and it is full of super helpful knowledge and encouragement. Currently doing the Fresh Eyes Challenge and finding it is really helping! Thanks again!
At the end of school am going to make a email for art stuff and try those challenge probably I also need to finish that reboot it need a email but am not sure what to use for it. :) Any way looking forward for it it seem interesting hopefully the challenge are fun I like me some puzzle it more interesting than vaguely trying to learn without knowing what your doing really.
Will your videos help me learn how to draw people playing golf, or I am being too simplistic. I am learning figure drawing from them, but leap to golf swing seems huge. Thank you.
Your humor is so on point. Wish I could give multiple likes.

Very helpful ♥ thank you
Yea, I feel like I've been ignoring the ground plane. It does make the figures kind of float. :)

Loved this about weight. Especially the bits about thinking how things squash and create shadow.
Glad it was useful!

Thanks!
Excellent video Kenzo. This is an often overlooked aspect of figure drawing. Very helpful and important

Kenny we need more body types tired of the supermodels tbh
We do try to use various body types and i think this video does a good job of that
