wow man.. 3 huge "aha" moments for me in this vid: 1. Always and I mean Always the torso is ending up being to long and now I finally understand why (this is huge really.. was so frustrated with that one) 2. Short legs - Also almost aways ending up with any where from a bit short to silly short legs so also super valuable tips on that one 3. Shrinking when for shortening, same thing... Your case studies looked to me like were taken from my sketchbook.. now I finally see why its happens Wow.. to bad I cant add the "mind blow" meme here.. Cant wait to get my hands on a pen and practice Love your content usually but this one is on the spot Thanks :)
This was actually really useful, that i had to stop myself from watching the entire vid and get out a notebook to take write down notes!! Thank u for imparting ur knowledge as always 🥰
Excellent pts about the rib cage squeezing down on the pelvis. Btw your figure drawings are so nicely executed. It's nice of you to show us your beginner work and how far you've come.
This is actually an amazing video. This should be spammed on every art forum, or on the r/learnart subreddit when people ask for tips and such. Thank you.
This channel has some of the best advice I’ve seen. I’ve been in an art class for all of high school and never did my teachers give me this advice. Makes me motivated to try gesture and figure drawing again, actually having guidelines and not aimlessly moving my pencil about. Thank you, I mean it. You’ve earned a subscription.
It's been a while since stopped drawing because of college. Good thing your video help me remember all the beginner mistakes I've made when I first started drawing so I don't have to repeat it when I start drawing again.
Fantastic video, Kenzo! Thank you so much for highlighting the improvements that I made in your 20:20 course in just six weeks. This was a life-changing experience for me and I thank you and Mayko for sharing your knowledge and inspiration!
Thank you so much!! This so helpfull. I was especialy very surpised how big the hands and feet where c:. I will defitenily keep that in mind next time I draw. Amazing video as always!
It's funny how one of the most basic things (proportion) is still the hardest thing for me - I'm fine with all other art fundamentals, still making mistakes but they are much easier to fix and improve. Proportions however... I know what I'm doing wrong but no matter what I do I can't seem to get rid of those mistakes! I even started doing lettering exercises to help me develop an eye for this stuff lol It is getting better but it's taking much longer than everything else. By the way, love the before and after examples in this video!
Best video ever! "Wrong in a good way" really helps to make good figure drawings, without exact proportions. But what about faces? It seems that mistakes are unacceptable there. You either draw as accurately as possible or nothing at all. I'm in desperate.
Hi . Your teaching for me is so understanding. I do self tough . Because so many reasons. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and teaching. I'm a beginner. I saw some many video. All of them talk about fundament , shape and value and most importantly Anatomy. About Anatomy I didn't understand. It's mean their name or place or bone . I Do practice every day and do struggling so much. Especially when I can't found a good teacher or class in my place. Can you help me to understand better. I did so much Gesture by you guide and I did well but get stuck what I should next. So my Gesture becoming awful and clumsy. I did just drawing them . Stop thinking but still they're bad . Sorry my English is not well. Because is not my language.
the hand and feet ones blew my mind. perfect video to look for your mistake.that's the one. you know you've made mistake but can't point it out? well it's here
for foreshortening, I have found that using a coil technique really helped me keep the size, but let my brain realize the direction. (I am 90% sure that it was a sycra video on youtube for those who are interested). Good luck!
First off, amazing video. It's really useful all the way through and they way you explain the different mistakes and why they are in fact mistakes, makes the learning experience so much easier and smoother. Moreover, congratulations to all the wonderful artists featured in the video for improving so much
I find myself going with large torso/long legs and small head a lot since I usually start with the torso/leg drawing first. I find it a lot easier this way since I sketch out the spine line (line of action/S curve) so I can fit the torso to block out most of the shape and figure out the proportions of the figure from there. Torsos are also super fun to draw for me. I'm always surprised with how large the feet looks when I'm drawing and I get nervous if I'm drawing them too big. I learned that hands are as big as our face in the show Cyberchase xD They also talked about other proportional things but I haven't remembered them quite as fondly as the hand size. Newsletters? Very cool, I'll subscribe to that.
Man, I've been working on this painting and I couldn't figure out what was off...hands were too small and I kept my rib cage and hips sitting over the top of each other instead of how it really was. THANK YOU!
I was hoping you’d show your foot on your face too because that was hilarious. Lol. And, a very helpful comparison!!! So often I make the extremities disproportioned. Thank you for this post. My heads are also, so hard to get right sized. Love your videos.
i'm so glad to have found this channel so long ago. like, i cannot tell you how much information you've given that i found to be so useful! I've went through hundreds of art channels, but this channel right here is in my honest opinion ranks as the best channel out there when it comes to art advice, art tips, tutorials, etc.... I just can't express how much you've helped me in in art ruts where i was completely lost. so with that be said. I LOVE THIS CHANNEL! thank you
I've made all of these mistakes. I noticed them and I made some changes. I still have problems with big heads and small hands since I have never been consistent with anatomy study. Now that I'm trying to be more serious I hope to make as much progress as them.
This was super helpful!! I’ve been stuck for ages and couldn’t figure out why until you explained the shrinking that happens with the foreshortening! Thank you so much 😊
I'm not a beginner, or an intermediate artist, but I still make several of these mistakes if I lose my concentration. I see them after the fact and know how to correct them, but I do still make them. A number of years ago I had to stop doing any drawing at all for a long time due to serious health issues. After about six to seven months, I was able to try drawing again, and I quickly learned that my proportions were all way off, as was my perspective. This, I think, is why constant practice is a must.
lol practicing figure drawing lately I found myself drawing limbs and hands really stubby. Not surprised that it's that common of a beginner mistake but I didn't think of using other limbs as reference to try and keep it right. Great video thanks
Thanks for the great instructions. The problem with the reference photos comes from the level of camera when taking the photos. Most of your photos as I see are taken at eye level, instead of waist level. So the upper part of the body is distorted and look a bit larger.
Wow...thats reaaally helpful and to the point!!! I subbed and i will search if you have a solution for distance mistakes... like i have a huge issue on leaving the right space between eyes, the length of nose....etc. I always struggle and i draw and erase and redraw and re-erase but there is no improvement. When i draw them right from the 1st time, is always based on luck.
... ok, I always knew my feet and hands are kind of small, but wow, my fingers when I put my hand on face just touches my eyebrows and my foot-forearm comparison is also way more different. and I do use my own body as reference a lot, my drawing space is between two full lenght mirrors and I would often place my hand on different body parts to figure out what the ratio should be. I wonder how much does it affect my art looking wrong...
I do the opposite - I enlongate while as I go down the figure. I alwyas tend to draw the figures stretched in vertical. I just don´t do it when I keep taking measurements - comparing the proportions and it sucks! I would like to do it naturaly! :D
That is why i personally think its not so bad to have some of these wooden figures ( www.mal-einfach-mit.de/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Puppe-von-vorne-kleiner-136x300.jpg) not actually for using them them as real reference (maybe this kinda to) but keeping them in mind. Whenever i draw a human pose i have my *virtual* images of this in mind (often i start with these even when I have a real reference- because its easier to think in this than in such a complex thing as a body.) That not necessarily prevent me from making mistakes with muscles etc but it gives me a good idea wher my ripcage lies and how long the limps might be. Its even more easy to shorten in perspective. Everyone is different, but for me works it.:)
Just noticed Scott Cambell the comic book artist makes this mistake, I always felt his proportions were off and now I know it's because his torsos are too long. Some people may say it's intentional but it could be that even professionals make this mistake
Really helpful. I haven't seen any "top art mistakes" video that useful in a long time.

"my hands are huuuge!....they can touch EVERYTHING!"
Even the deepest part 😏

The rib-pelvis demonstration is quite brilliant. It really hit home the point of this squashing concept. Thanks.

That shoulder bit is pure gold. Major struggles. Thank you!
This was very helpful, thanks for posting :>
I’ve been struggling with proportions these days and have been trying to improve
Always a fountain of helpful things, K.
