- On this episode: By 2001, Hollywood was beginning to smell what The Rock was cooking and wanted some. Bruce and Conrad discuss The Rock's transition from being the most electrifying man in sport entertainment to becoming the most electrifying man is sports AND entertainment.
Something to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard is an audio podcast that discusses topics, events, wrestlers and memorable moments through the lens of former WWE executive Bruce Prichard co-hosted by Conrad Thompson.
STW was launched in August 2016 on MLW Radio. The episodes typically range from 2 hours to 4 hours in length, and include discussions about previous WWE pay-per-views and former WWE wrestlers.

I do too lol
Yeah then I wake up to a 3 hour long ad
@@weworldwide1348 You got a congenital visit in prison?
I did that once and woke up to " how big is Batista's d*ck"
I remember during that Rock/Austin interview Austin himself said "take Debra out of it, the fact is you still have the title and I want it.". Rock and Austin didn't need any help building any more heat for their match they had plenty of history behind them.
But I wanted to see Debras legs 🥺🥺
The july 30th 2001 opening promo for Raw is my favorite promo of all time..
"Because once again we want to smelllllllllll....what The Rock....is....cooking!" Still gives me goosebumps
I also believe that was the first night we heard Rocks voice went from Deep to High
It always amused me when Rock pretended not to know who Booker T was. "Who in the blue Hell are you?!" 🤣
Remember what he said to Big Show on his debut.... "Vince??... Who is this rudy poo?"😂😂
Or when he called Rikishi a thong wearing fatty🤣

The Rock was never quite as good after the first prolonged stint in Hollywood, but remained very entertaining over those next three years. The 2011-13 run......frankly, that's middle-aged Disney dad Dwayne Johnson trying to vaguely remember a great character he once portrayed effortlessly.
Middle aged? He was in his late 30’s when he returned. Now, he’s middle aged…lol
The austin turning heel thing is a hard one, we got some amazingly hilarious moments with him Kurt and Vince.
Loved him as a heel
93avarice loved his heel theme ❤️
@SALOMON LEA Nah, they should have turned him back going into Invasion. Everyone wanted to see face Austin vs. the Alliance, but they did the worst thing possible and turned him back to lead WCW/ECW. It made no sense.
100% was against it at the time but looking back retrospectively I think of it as kind of Austin’s encore after a legendary career. If you think about it that way, it makes it a lot easier to enjoy.
The Rocks promo was so hypocritical ,I think this is where I started to dislike The Rock less and it's been downhill all the way with me.
Forgot about the epic heat he got in Sacramento when he said that he’d be back when the Lakers beat the Kings in May. Classic!
Conrad blew right by it.....
Jordan Hutton idiot
11 year old me was at the Raw April 2nd, after WrestleMania X-7 in Fort Worth. I even have a picture of me giving the middle finger to Vince in the ring. What I'd give to relive 2001.
Word
I remember back then when the Rock and his wife were expecting their first child. I suggested that his wife move to Arkansas so the child could be Little Rock. (nobody laughed at that joke then, and nobody is laughing at it now)
Don’t sell yourself short 😂😂😂
35:29...."I'mma call her Pebble, because ya know...you're the Rock".... Bruce's Dok Hendrix's aka Michael PS Hayes impression gets me every time😂😂....I'm over here in my car laughing....#DootDootDoot

Really hope a “The Rock 99-2000” episode is in the works.
It's been already.
And also "The Rock 2011-2013" episode as well
Rock 97-98 episode 71, Rock 99 episode 230. Enjoy!
You’re half right though. In the 99 episode, they said they wanted to sneak in the 00 one by the end of the year. And that’s arguably his most important year and I’d say his best and most exciting (even though his Austin and Hogan matches the following years were great). Guess it just slipped through for now.
The Rock's heel run here was absolutely his best work. Every time he was a face, his promos were good, but always seemed like they had to hit all of the T-Shirt slogans. But when he was a heel, he could just cut loose and free flow. And his WM promo before the third Austin Match is, in my opinion, one of the greatest of all time.
To be fair, there is always greater scope for a heel to be creative. A mega face hitting all of the catchphrases is a feature not a bug. That’s what sends the peeps home happy.
I loved the way Rock used this expectation to troll the fans in his Toronto promo. The part where he mockingly says “yay he said Toronto!” was hilarious.
Proud to have been in attendance (section 104) at WM17 in Houston. Rock's pop was unreal. It was so loud, I don't think the TV did it justice for volume.
April of '01 was the end of the Attitude Era; The WM17 ending ushered in the decline of the WWF/E that persists to this day; It's a shell of its former self. I haven't watched a complete episode of Raw since '03.
Rock's heel turn was entertaining, but it was short-lived as Hollywood came a-knockin'
When Rock returned a few years ago.. It was cringeworthy.
Long Live The Rock '98 until '03
17 was the beginning of the end. Wrestling died in 2002 when Austin and Rocky left. That was it. End of an era.

37:20 I think it was called the WCW Championship until The Alliance lost the match at Survivor Series, then they called it the World Championship until they unified them at Vengeance, then it was called the World Championship once again in September 2002 when Bischoff gave it to the son-in-law
Omg u remember our anniversary ☺️☺️
So nothing on how Rock’s contract expired due to an “oversight” and how it caused a falling out between him and WWE until he returned in 2011?
Solomonster explains it better
From what I heard Vince wanted to ride Rocks success in Hollywood and say he helped him alone to make it there and The Rock wasn’t having any of that crap so he was butt hurt about it then HHH told him don’t resign him so that’s how it happened

Hollywood Rock in 2003 was my favorite.
I always compared rock/Austin as wwe’s version of Brady/manning, bird/magic, Williams/DiMaggio.
By themselves they are legendary once in a generation superstars. However they just happened to coexist in the same era.
The wwe were lucky. They will never have TWO simultaneous super uber stars.
but they have roman reigns and seth rollins. Those 2 are box office. just look at the house show numbers. lmao. Of course i am joking.
I disagree. There has been times when WWE did have 2 top dogs in the company. Rather it was at the same level or not.

I loved the ending to WM 17. However, I would've turned Vince into a face. He could've seen things Austin's was as it were leading into the invasion.
Yeah, that would have been good. People actually thought Vince turned face when he helped Austin too, that's why the heel turn just didn't work. You can see and hear that the fans were confused.
I thought a 2000 one was in the works after 1999. Can’t find it in their videos.
Rock 2003 was greatest heel.ever
I would argue that mcmahon and hogan were more effective heels, and Hollywood rock did last long enough to be the greatest, i kinda wish he cameback in 2011 with that character.
Great episode. But how in the hell do you cover 97-98 2001-2004 without covering 2000 witch was his best year
From a fan’s perspective (fan since 1985); I think insiders like Bruce significantly over state the “WWE fans” vs “WCW fans” as if they’re completely different people. I think it would scare people to know how many fans overlapped. I watched both promotions all the time. If you combine ratings for WWE and WCW to give a number representing how many people were watching wrestling, I think you’re making a mistake. I think 60-70% of the fans watched and supported both companies and that overlap actually inflated the accounted for fans during the ratings war. The notion that WWE fans wouldn’t know just about everything there was to know about nWo or WCW because they were WWE fans is just an opinion detached from reality. It wasn’t and never will be an “either or” situation thanks to VCRs (back then) and DVR these days. Wrestling fans love every promotion because most can’t get enough of the industry as a whole. I love the show, you guys, and I really appreciate the hard work you both put in during your busy schedules to keep this little family gathering going!
You are obviously New to Wrestling kid..that's cool though, we need new Fans....let me know if you have any questions about the Business....

Congrats on the 3rd season premiere of the show guys. This was an anniversary show for 1 reason or another. Conrad wants to celebrate Hobbs and Shaw coming out by looking at the Rock final 3 years with WWE full time and the 3rd year anniversary of the show. I could tell after Hollywood Hulk hogan at WM 18, Dwayne was wanting out and exploring other options that his people wanted too. Glad his heart is always with WWE and we found out by Wrestlemania 20. He wanted to reunite The Rock and Sock Connection. I wonder if there were talks of Goldberg vs The Rock at Mania 19 and the fact the rumor might have gotten forced changed of plans. Sometimes when rumors get out Vince does change plans.
Is The Rock 1999-2000 episode coming up soon ? 🙏🙏🙏
The rock concert is one of the greatest promos in history.
Would love to hear episodes on Judgement Day 2000 and Jeff Hardy
I 100% call bullshit on Hogan having a broken rib during his match with the Rock. He was afraid he couldn't hang and was gonna make himself look worse than usual, so he created an imaginary excuse for it before it even happened.
The Mount Rushmore of wrestling question is a weird one. I think you have to go Hogan and Flair. From there, any modern fan should be choosing between Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin and the Rock. I wanna leave Michaels off because he's an asshole. Austin's career was cut short and it's scary to think of what he and the Rock could've been, but Austin still has enough time to earn a spot. The Rock's relatively limited amount of time actually wrestling is a question mark. He still gets the nod from me over Michaels for all the shit he pulled. I'd like to leave Hogan off for all the shit he pulled, but he's undeniably up there. He's done too much for his douchenoozlery to keep him off. It's scary to think what the Rock could've been with 15-20 years in the wrestling business. It's even scarier to think that if he had that, he'd have earned a small fraction of what he did in Hollywood. Turns about as fair play. I hear Wahoo McDaniel left pro football for wrestling because there was more money in it at the time. Don't know how true that is, but it certainly seems feasible.
Bruce sounds like he downloaded his voice and personality into the body of a robot. B-3PO? Once I knew they were recording at his office in WWE headquarters, I was waiting for Vince to knock on the door, open it up and yell "hey, pal. Get a whiff of this one!" Maybe next week.
I'd probably still let Trish Stratus give me the stink face. Hell, I'd probably pay for it.
modern fan? Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin, and the Rock had their hey days 15-23 years ago. That's not modern, jabroni!
Undertaker ? The most respected wrestler amongst his peers, plus a 30+ year career.

The Rock was never quite the same wrestler after he started giving time to Hollywood. When he would come back it was obvious that quality matches were not going to happen. The matches with Cena were so-so, the matches with Punk also so-so, and his second match with Hogan was entertaining but not exactly a great match in-ring. I have no issue with the Rock making money in Hollywood, but the 400 comebacks to WWE honestly probably need to stop.

WM 16 plans were changed a lot. It was originally Austin/Big Show, then Austin/Rock/HHH, then just Austin/Rock II. They were also missing Undertaker too so that left their plans limited by the end.

Being a great athlete is not just about what you can do from a physical standpoint. It's also about how you can transcend and rise above things like race, gender, or politics. That is why people like Tiger Woods and Billie Jean King are on that top 50 list BRUCE. Being a great athlete is about inspiring others. Not just what you can do in a ring, field, court, arena, or otherwise. I doubt Kurt Angle has many of those qualities. Sorry, you won't make it on many top 50 lists because you can take a bump or because you're a "hell of a hand"

Austin comes back and HHH goes right back to the IC title lol. You’re not good enough to feud with for the main belt. That’s why HHH dropped it to Rocky. Then he dropped it to Austin. Instead of HHH dropping it directly to Austin. Shows you how good HHH is. Austin comes back and Hunter is the only one “demoted” back to the mid card title.

These newer STW episodes are definitely suffering a lack of quality.
Seems like Conrad is just skipping through the events in time and Bruce just pretty much giving one-sentence answers.
There is SO MUCH stuff that they could dig into detail about here, but they're just reading the Observer and noting things.
If they haven't got the will to really dig in deep, like they used to, then just give it a break until Bruce gets fired again.
